AArgh Computers, so i'll just put up the numbers

I created this really informative post comparing Michigan/ Alabama 2011 scoring Offense and scoring Defense to show that the advantage leaned towards Mich/B1G. Then my computer forze up and i lost content, so instead ill just throw up the numbers in disgust.

Adjusted for decimals and worst team on schedule output. The opponents for both teams averaged giving up 35 Td's over the season. While the opponents scoring offense was 24 pts. per game for Alabama, and 27 pts. per game for Michigan. The OOC schedule leans even heavier in Wolverine favor. For Alabama the OOC scoring offense averages 20 pts. per game, For Michigan the OOC scoring offense averages 29 pts per game. The SEC superiority myth is just that a myth that is a function of their schedule, and on Saturday everyone is going to see that it is all just smoke and mirrors.

I think you're maybe missing a factoid here.  Just a little one.  The SEC has won 6 national championships in a row.  Please neg me if I have this mistaken, but, I believe, that is where the "myth" comes from.

True but you cannot win the MNC unless you are in the game and the SEC ALWAYS has a team in the game. At that point, they just have to beat one team to be the MNC. Conferences who do not get a team in the MNC game obviously can't win it.

If the powers that be had seen fit to allow UM and OSU to meet again in 2006, the Big 10 would have been guaranteed to win the MNC...sort of like how the SEC was guaranteed to win it last seaon since everyone was just fine with a rematch between Bama and LSU.

There are measures of conference strength out there, based on how the conference overall performs in its out-of-conference games.  I remember hearing last year that the SEC was the toughest conference, followed by the Big 12 (once again, due to strong OOC performance) and then the B1G.

I'm sure you could quibble with their methodologies, but there are at least some quasi-objective measures you can turn to.  The trouble is that I don't know where to find them...

If OSU and UM won their bowl games in 2006, then today the stereotypes about the B1G would be a lot different.  Yes, I am annoyed by the preconceived notion of SEC superiority, but it is at least grounded in some recent historical facts.  Until we flip the script, for instance by beating Alabama tomorrow, that meme will continue.

The advantage leaned in Uof M's favor. MIchigan faced opponents that scored more points per game, while allowing the same amount of TD's as Alabama, i got my stats from ncaa.com, the metric i used was scoring defense, and scoring offense the numbers are pretty straightforward, advantage goes to Michigan .

Interesting points. Granted, during the two years prior to their six-year winning streak, the SEC didn't have a team in the title game, which is consistent with your point. The SEC also claimed last year's title before the game was even played.

The myth is about the superiority of the defenses in the SEC. In Reality the deciding factor of who plays in the MNC game is a beauty pageant, it is rare that the 2 best teams actually play each other. Personally I think several teams could have beat Alabama in that game last year. If LSU would have had a playbook that had more plays in it, rather the Jordan Jefferson Deer in headlights play, and 5 yard out to Taco Shorts ( Taco Pants younger significantly smaller cousin, so small that it appeared Jefferson was throwing the ball into the turf on purpose) Lsu could have won.

The defenses in the SEC are legit, but I'll agree that outside of Arkansas there really isn't an offense in that conference that strikes me as dynamic in any way.  To this day, I still think OkSt., Stanford, Wiscy, and Oregon would have given Alabama and LSU a better game than the two gave each other, and might have pulled off the win.  But Alabama had the "best" loss of the group, and so we were treated to the SEC West division title game.

I, like many of you, want desperately to believe that the SEC's recent dominance of the college football world (especially defensively) is more the result of media attention than actual dominance. Unfortunately, there is much evidence to suggest otherwise.

In the last two years, the Oregon Ducks have been held to under 35 points offensively three times. Once was a surprising showing from Cal, the other two were both times they played SEC teams in that span.

The SEC has had at least one representative in each of the last 6 MNC games. In the 5 that they didn't play another SEC team, they played the champions of the following conferences, and held them all to low point totals:

2007 - Big Ten champ Ohio State held to 14 points
2008 - Big Ten champ Ohio State held to 24 points
2009 - Big 12 champ Oklahoma held to 14 points
2010 - Big 12 champ Texas held to 21 points
2011 - Pac 10 champ Oregon held to 19 points

You may be able to make a good case that SEC depth is a myth (I think South Carolina and Arkansas have been grossly overrated the past couple years), but the top of the SEC has pretty well proven that they're the best teams in the country.

At least until someone unseats them. Go Blue.

Three of those SEC wins were either heavy favors for the SEC team (essentially home games) or favored the SEC team.  How about a national championship game in Big Ten country instead of Florida or Louisiana?
