A2 gameday bar scene
So ill be attending the opener against WMU next sat and im just wondering which bars will actually be accessible on gameday. Im familiar with Ashley's which is the holy grail as far as im concerned and would love to stop in for a beer or 8 with my pops. Just wondering weather thats actually doable on a gameday. Any suggestions?

All the bars will be packed so pick one and get there early. BWW, The Brown Jug, Scorekeeper's, Ashley's, etc etc etc

Any bar is doable if you get there early, grab a spot, and stay all day.
Back when I lived in the dorm, a couple Michigan Hockey regionals were only one some channel that even some bars didnt have.
I called around and found out that the Arena had that channel.
So I got down there around 11am, got a booth with a TV in it, and stayed until 7pm when the game came on. Overall I spent around 12 hours and a countless amount of money there.
It ended up being packed so I am really glad I got there when I did.
That became me routine for a couple years regionals until I got my own place and opted for the expensive sports package.

The A2 bar scence (on game day) is awful. The only bar near the stadium is Cubs' A.C. (at Colonial Lanes) on S. Industrial. The rest on Main, Liberty, and State... will be packed with amateurs.
Park on S. Industrial, take your old man to Cubs' A.C. They have tons of televisons, outdoor seating (with televisions), and they don't jack up the prices too much for gameday. Plus, it is a nice walk across the golf course to the stadium.

but the closest bar to the stadium is packard pub, on the corner of packard and state st. Very undergrad scene, but they did have $1 budweiser bottles for a while.

They are not very many options near the stadium itself. Someone already mentioned, Cubs A.C., which is actually a decent place and has decent pub-style food for the price.
However, if proximity is not an issue, you'll basically need to make any bar a day-long event, because after the game, you will have grave difficulty getting into most places. I guess the question is this - what sort of atmosphere do you want?

The "U" stands for Ufer, even though the family reportedly sold its interest years ago. It's also a great place to get a ticket that isn't coming from a scalper.

good question...i just realized in my 8 straight years of attending games i've never been to a bar pre-game. my old roomate use to like to hit up the bars up and down south U though.

But Grizz might be a little less packed than some of the main street places. Generally avoid anything right on Main or South U.

I graduated right after Packard Pub opened so I don't know how it is on gamedays, but I would check that out. I can't imagine it's bad on gameday, considering it's in the heart of the tailgate scene. Also, if it sucks, you're not going out of your way because it's on the way to the staidum.

Wolverine State Brewing Company will be running a shuttle to the stadium this season. They are west of the stadium on Stadium Boulevard:

Quickie Burger is not a bad place to have a beer and watch a game, a little small but good atmosphere.

Frasers on Packard is a great spot with easy parking. More townie than student hangout but a classic Ann Arbor hangout. A bit of a long walk to the stadium but doable.
