9/6/2014--The Day Big Ten Football Died?

Submitted by MGlobules on

MSU loses soundly; OSU losing soundly; we are trounced. Elsewhere, B1G teams lose or sneak past weak small-conference squads. The onslaught from the critics is going to be merciless tomorrow. I'm not sure there's been a weekend this humiliating that I can remember.

I can't believe I am rooting for an OSU miracle at this late hour to salvage the conference's reputation.

I may casually root for B1G teams, but rarely can I conjure that for our rivals.  But, in all honesty at this point I could care less about any other team.  It's just this particular UM showing that hurts, nothing more.

had one big defensive miscue that put Oregon up either 32-27 or 39-27, and at the point the crowd was nuts, the momentum was all Oregon, and their defense picked it up.  With the line having been 13, and Oregon scoring late to cover, that loss is not terrible, in my opinion (certainly not as bad as Wisky blowing the lead against LSU).

And I wouldn't write off Ohio State just yet.  They seem to have a knack for winning games like this 28-24 or 31-28.

Yes, it is looking like a perfect storm of losing games. Right now it is 2235 EST and MSU lost, Purdue lost, Nebraska should have been forced into OT, OSU is losing, Iowa pulls out late versus Ball State, and well you know what is happening in South Bend.

Is this some indictment of Big Ten football? No, until this becomes a regular event, it is just that an anomaly.

The Big Ten teams just met some good teams today.

The Big Ten is in a long-term, possibly irreversible decline. That's been apparent for years now. Big Ten teams can't win marquee matchups during the regular season or in the bowl season with any regularity. They've had too many tire-fire Saturdays like this one. When the conference's best game looks like it's going to be a last-minute win over McNeese St., that tells you something.

The Big Ten will have a team that makes it to the elite level for a season, maybe every ten years or so. But that's it.

The Big Ten will not reverse the trend until they get coaches that can go into the south and west and RECRUIT their asses off. Let's face it: Midwest HS football can't play with the south. Go look at a state by state analysis of four and five stars.

He'll, the state of Georgia produces double what the Midwest's best - Ohio - produces. The talent isn't here. Lloyd Carr's best teams had most of their playmakers from CA, LA, FL, VA, and OH.

It's tough to recruit in those area now, because the Big Ten is seriously thought of as a joke down here.
