Jalen Rose and Jimmy King argue with Mr. Contrarian (Bayless) about how the Fab Five would have fared in this year's tournament, and versus Kentucky in particular.
Jimmy King: "You know we winnin' this Skip!"
+1 Jimmy King.
They were all huge(smallest was 6'5"), can run and jump. Kentucky are good, but Michigan's starting 5 > Kentucky starting 5. I'd give the edge to Kentucky on team depth. It's hard to tell because both are talented teams and have 3 lottery picks on the same team(Kentucky may have 4).
Yeah, Kentucky might have more depth, but Bayless' suggestion that Michigan couldn't guard Kentucky's frontcourt ignores the fact that both Chris Webber and Juwan Howard were 6-10 and went on to be all-star NBA power forwards.
Skip Bayless is an idiot.
I think the Fab 5's defense was very underrated. They were all "long" and very athletic. Their only (relatively) weaknesses were outside shooting and dribbling.
But take Patterson, Cousins and Orton into consideration on the inside and I do think it is a surprisingly good matchup.
Kentucky's top 5 backups might have been able to make the tournament this year as a starting 5 somewhere else...
As someone who grew up in Kentucky and is a Michigan alum, I can't honestly say whether it is a definitive win one way or the other.
I would take that roster, even 18 years later.
Of course this is my humble, unbiased opinion.
I DVR'd 1st and 10 because I heard King would be on with Jalen. He is awful. He needs to find a new profession. He's bad at commentary during games and he was a scared little boy on 1st and 10. Jalen did great and Skip is Skip.
College basketball has changed so much in the past 18 years, I think it's hard to see any of the powers from the early 90s not winning today.
At least two of the Fab 5 would have been one and done players today (Webber and Howard were unreal) and Rose may have gone as well. Having that whole group as sophomores would be just sick today.
They just have to win it all. Till then.... Shhhhhh....
"Who's gonna guard Bledsoe? They're too Big for you guys! Cousins is 6' 10 and Orton is 6'11, who's gonna match up with them?"
Are you on drugs Skip?
IIRC it was Byron Houston who had his career altered by Webber and Howard. Later, he measured at 6'4"-something (well below his listed height of 6'7"). Never amounted to much in the pros, I don't think...
People forget how good King and Jackson were. I'd take Michigan all day in that matchup.
Prolly cost more. Especially if you account for inflation.
I just listened to that I wanted to remind Skip of a guy named Chris Webber. I have heard Skip say on that show that Chris Webber was the most talented Big Man he has ever seen so for him to totally ignore him is rediculous. Fab Five would win easily.
Hopefully everyone realizes that Skip's only purpose on that show is to counterpoint whatever the guest debater says in order to ruffle people's feathers and get them talking....hence his continued dogging of LeBron.
You guys haven't even discussed the part at the very end of 1st and 10, when they're all standing and bantering back and forth. Jalen Rose said, and I'm paraphrasing, that yeah they didn't win, but they had a great run and that the Fab 5 was more than just basketball, it was culture. He then said that the Fab 5 and "they" (assuming he was talking about the Duke players) went out to the same place that night and only the Michigan guys got in. That got a pretty good amount of laughter from everyone, and seemed to sum up what the Fab 5 was about, in a way...
Last I checked it was the Fab 5 of Michigan. Kentucky really only has a Fab 3. This is no contest..UM by double digits and they would be dunkin and gabbing their nuts all game long.
I think everyone is missing the best part of the segment, and that is just how classy J Rose is. He would not make a prediction because he would almost have to say something negative about UK. I love having Jalen represent on ESPN. He is ,by far, one of the most insightful commentators ESPN has had in quite a while; and he is always bringing a different take on things-which is very rare in today's world of clone sports show hosts.
team was good enough to earn a name. no contest.
