#9 SB Defeats Indiana on the Road (Game 1); Game 2 is cancelled

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The softball team traveled to Indiana to play a double header under cloudy skies.  Weekday conference games are rare as these schools are not exactly neighbors.  Michigan climbed up the rankings from #12 to #9 this week.

M jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the 3rd inning.  Haylie was in a groove and pitched well until the 5th inning.  Indiana worked the bases full with two out but Haylie gave up a walk then a single down the line.  Sara came in to pitch and she gave up a 2-run single before striking out the last batter in the inning making it 4-4.

It remained 4-4 through the 9th inning when Lyndsay Doyle reached 1st base on a single up the middle.  Then the rains came and caused a 30 minute delay.  We scored 3 in top of 9th for the 7-4 win.

Lauren Sweet went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs.  Ashley Lane went deep and long for a solo shot in the 3rd.  Sierra Romero went 2 for 5 with an RBI and run scored.

On another note: Sierra Romero was awarded Freshmen of the Week with her strong performance against Sparty.  She WILL be the Freshmen of the Year for the Big Ten Conference and maybe the nation.  Congrats to Sierra.

note; there is another rain cell moving into the area.  My guess is that we will have another rain delay in the next hour or so.  This is why I dont like softball in April.  The Midwestern weather is too hard to predict.

I was stupid enough to try to fit in a call to my cable company between the two games.  Now my TV is out completely and I'm missing this one!  Off to a good start, though, I like where this thing is headed!

Seriously!  The thought of 3 more years of her play, two of which will be alongside the dynamic duo of Driesenga/Wagner in the circle, is incredibly exciting.  I really feel like we've got a chance in these coming years to make some serious tournament runs if everyone stays healthy & sharp.

thunder cell to the South of Bloomington.  I think it will skirt a mile or two from the field but we might have another delay for lightning.  The NCAA rule is 30 minutes must pass after any sighting of lightning.  If there is any lightning spotted during the delay, the clock re-starts.

That is too bad because we had the second game in check.  No re scheduled date has been announced yet.  This is why April road games are so tough.  Our girls have to get on the bus and head to class tomorrow.

have no clue.  The team bus did not get back home until about 2am.  Most of the girls have exams this week so getting up at 6am is hell on them.

I understand they had to cancel the game because if they played it, the kids would not have been home until past 3am.  I dont understand why they schedule game so far away during the week.

The B1G should play a tourney style format and play 1 games on Friday, 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday.  There could be 3 or 4 teams at one site and play a round robin.  This would reduce the travel especially when Rutgers and Maryland join the B1G.  The distance from Nebraska to Rutgers is over 1300 miles and over 12 hours via bus.
