# 9 Michigan vs. Concordia mens baketball open thread
Anyone figure out a stream?
This site seems like an option.
There's no link yet but it says that there will be one closer to game time.
A stream is a body of water with a current, confined within a bed and stream banks. Depending on its locale or certain characteristics, a stream may be referred to as a branch, brook, beck, burn, creek, "crick", gill (occasionally ghyll), kill, lick, mill race, rill, river, syke, bayou, rivulet, streamage, wash, run or runnel.
Found one not too far from my home just a couple minutes ago...
Won't even be home in time to search for a stream and watch this. I hope it's on mgovideo.com later.
It is hard to believe that basketball season is here. Seems like the team was just playing in the championship game.
me the least, there was so much win in last season.
Starting lineup features both Morgan and Horford.... going two bigs even without McGary. Guess they were serious about GRIII at SF.
Does that mean we will see Mark Donnal this year?
Beilein wants him to play half the game tonight. He will evaluate after the exhibition games what Donnal's role will be this year.
so sure this wouldn't happen.
Warning... Student commentators... and use the pop out player
Dang Stauskas over the backboard but he was already fouled.
I wish they'd stop using the bigs to pressure up top quite as often, at least against teams that are going to struggle to beat us straight up. No need to give up easy buckets inside like that.
Yeah but that's something JB teaches, why not practice in a meaningless game for those teams we will want that pressure against.
GR3 jumper looked smooth
this stream is pretty good. However:
The link I previously used for the BTN mobile app + VLC no longer works - and I can't find those links anymore. Does anyone have the link for the BTN mobile apps that can be used with VLC?
Thanks - Bo Glue!
Levert jumper looks more smooth.
I miss Burke beating the pressure already.
to handle the pressure better if we play VCU in Puerto Rico.
Lol. Give it time, that was his first dose of full court pressure.
Irvin is BIG
I'd like to see Horford work the post a little bit, especially against a small team. He should be able to get some easy buckets if they're not doubling him (and maybe even then.)
Like what I'm seeing out of LeVert so far. Active defensively, making a nuisance of himself.
Our announcers are way better than the students at IU.
How are you a student at Michigan and think we play the 1-3-1 more than man to man?
Last year so fun toward the end that it was a bummer to see it end. Really psyched for this season
This is delightfully non-competitive
Right where they want us.
Get a T.O. coach!
Nice drive to the bucket by Stauskas. All those muscles must have been why he was able to dominate the Concordia defense
Not just a shooter.
...must be basketball season.
Stauskas is a BEAST. Yes, we know this from last year. Yes, this is vs. Concordia (RIP). Yes, this is only 1/2 of one half. But, I think he will be excellig with the ball in his hand more and the need/right to create more.
Anyone that thinks he and GRIII won't be astromically better is kidding themself.
These guys are get 1st and 2nd option reps in practice...they're getting the confidence of 1st and 2nd options...and they're getting more opportunities.
Experience is going to be our weakness, but we're more than talented enough.
...but we're really good.
Well the baby seal is being clubbed. It is nice for the basketball team to be in a position now that this is expected.
Stauskas seems a little more comfortable on the move with the ball - insert "this is Concordia" here - but playing smooth out there.
It'll be interesting to see how well this team shares the ball with no ball dominating players in the rotation.
Now they're going to have slumps...because you get that when you don't have the go to guys like we had last year. But we're going to be VERY fun to watch.
for the running scores tonight. I was able to glance at the thread during some late work for updates and that helped.
Walton for 3
Spike to Walton. After the Morgan monster block. (love a little 2 PGs for a change of pace)
Love how strong Walton is around the hoop. Great hands, very under control. Hopefully that keeps up when he's playing against bigger folks in the regular season.
I was always worried about the constant punding Trey took becuase it seemed like he always hit the deck after driving to the hoop.
Hello: Derrick Walton
Derrick Walton just capped off a personal 7-0 run with the Trey Burke signature steal
someone on this board predicted we would win this game by 15 b/e we would be tinkering with the lineup. Ha. Great stretch by Walton!
I said 35 and I am thinking that was too low...
Derrick Walton or Drey Wurke?
I think I like this kid Walton...
Stop it Walton
WOW. We are going to go undefeated this year! /s
Guy commentating just called Glenn, RGIII
Rlenn Gobinsin III
GRIII for Glenn Robinson the Third, if you didn't put that together yourself.
No he actually did say RGIII
I heard him say GRIII the first time. I only heard him the one time, however.
GRIII is not the same as RGIII, if you didn't put that together yourself.
I read that in Jon Benjamin's voice thanks to your avatar. It made your comment approximately seven times better.
Good to see a few assists from GRIII. We know the coaches weren't just blowing smoke about his improved court vision.
It looks like
I like Walton's game. He's not going to be able to generate his own offense anything like Burke could do, but he's quick and aggressive, seems comfortable in transition and dishing on the move. He's had a couple iffy decisions, but that'll come. True for any young PG.
Don't get me wrong...I loved watching Trey like I loved watching Denard. But after awhile you want to see the TEAM and not 90% of the offense rely on one person.
Spoiler alert: not good.
"In the books"
Second time he's been slow rotating.
Offense too. I'm a little surprised that he looks a little overwhelmed.
With that said, Levert/Stauskas/Walton are all exceeding what I expected, so happy face.
Irvin might take some time to get up to full speed and learn his role. We'll see.
He's 20 minutes into his college career.
WHAT?! I thought he was a sophomore.
Still, he does look a step slower than the others. Which is fine. And if so, it probably means that he'll need a little longer to get up to pace than others. Which is what I said. Or you think that he'll remain slower for his career?
If you think he's just slow period, that's conditioning.
I said slow in rotation/a step slow. That's simply effort and knowing where the hell to be.
You can't help off your man like you do in HS, in HS, most kids can't hit that 3 from the corner so you pack it in if you're on the wing. In college Nik Stauskas hits five 3's in the first half of the Elite 8 if you sag off of him in the corner.
I think he'll be fine, it's just experience and taking pride in defense.
Levert is team MVP. Lottery pick. Final Four MVP. Jordan's heir.
Sounds about right.
Caris playing PG now.
I expect 60 points in every half this year...
...Lloyd Carr told me that you should get better as the season goes along.
At the HALF.
Wow... look at this athletic ability! Scary scary good. GRIII leaped from the free throw line!
I admit, part of it is just the novelty of the idea, but DAMN I LOVE THAT BIG LINEUP. Beilein is going to have fun throwing in that lineup just to screw with people, then adding the 1-3-1, then going small, then big.
Ah. the world seems right at the moment.
41 pt lead without their best player. Crappy opposition, but nothing to sneeze at.
I'll take that every half.
LeVert so active on both sides of the ball, looks much more comfortable and confident than before.
so true. That was a little his pattern last year as well - against better competition he had a fairly difficult time but against weaker competition he really looked good (more so than others).
However, he looks incredible on BOTH sides of the floor. He will be a leader on defense for sure - we've heard the talk but this is the first time I've seen it so clearly. That boy is coming into his own.
Oh yeah, and Stauska can still shoot the ball. But he'll be more aggressive.
FUN SEASON AHEAD. BUCKLE UP.
- Oh yeah, I actually forgot about McGary. That's funny.
- That Concordia fan section is *WILD*
Wow we look damn good. I know it's only Concordia but 60 points in the first half without McGary.
Stop being so fucking lazy and spend $200 on iTunes and get new music. This is embarrassing...you've been playing the same songs for 5 years.
So if you are the Concordia coach, what do you tell your players at half time?
It's an exhibition game vs. the #9 D1 team in the country. Who cares? Just go have fun and try and get better.
lol yeah, just try to improve from here. There won't be any tougher ones the rest of the way. At least it's not like football, where if you're completely overmatched it also means you'll be beat the hell up by the end of the game.
I mean, what if 5 of us MGoBloggers went and played? It'd be a similar result. What would we say?
Just keep playing...and first rounds on me.
I don't think anyone would truly be hurt that this Michigan team is kicking our ass.
We could still hold them under 120?
Keep your heads up, we don't play them again. Ever.
Great opportunity here. Have fun and work on your game.
Well it's almost like you're in it now. This might be the closest you get, so enjoy this second half!
Anybody know if they have a sideline producer?
Your cameraman on the court should have a headset and he should just point to her and tell her "go" when she's standing next to Beilein. It's not hard.
He should be listening to the "booth" and he should be able to hear them say "and now we're going to go down to the floor where (such and such) is standing by with Coach Beilein."
i think we're going to win, you guys.
I honestly think that Concordia could come out in the 2nd half with Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Lebron, Dwight Howard, and Kurt Rambis (just because) and we would still probably win this game just by slowing it down.
Score and time update?
yeah, you said RGIII and your mic is still on and very loud.
I love hearing this "off mic" banter between the announcers. I'm waiting for him to talk about how drunk he got last night and banged some girl, then woke up in the morning and realized it was a tranny. Or something like that.
I'm probably enjoying it too much. That kind of stuff just interests me. He was really pumped that he said swagger during the first half.
Am I the only one enjoying this creepy halftime coverage? It's all there: Camera panning over unsuspecting fans, event staff guy with rough voice meeting up with long lost aquaintances. The student crew might not be amazing, but at lease the guys seem genuinely pumped to be working the game.
Think they forgot to turn off their mics for a second...
I'm nervous. What if GRIII dunks from the 3pt line? How will we know they scored it correctly? It's never been done before! These things shouldn't happen to a fanbase like ours.
What is the score? Just got back, no stream will load
-1 you suck
I can be needlessly obnoxious too
We cant rebound, or play defense. Stauskas is just a shooter, They cant beat pressure. Not athletic enough, and they take crazy shots. FIRE BEILIEN. /s
Do i get anything for the first angry basketball post?
according to MGoBlue's stat page, we are winning all the categories except two (and they are related).
Who can guess which categories we are loosing for the first half?
Offensive rebounds and 2nd chance points. We are just hitting too high a percentage.
The team read this and decided to get like 5 offensive rebounds in one possession...
um. Now we're tied with 2nd change pts and winning the offensive rebound stat.
We've being selfish.
For an exhibition game. I think the back-to-back Big Ten Championship/National Championship Game seasons have piqued our interest. This team had come a long way since the days I went to Michigan with Avery Queen and Josh Asselin leading the way. Go Blue!
This team is geniunely FUN to watch. We have a great coach and we have an intriguing team that went from 2 guys and an awesome supporting cast to a "great young team."
It wouldn't surprise me if we set some kind of wacky B1G record on most number of different players to lead the team in scoring for a game. I can name at least 8 guys.
This is now NBA Jam...
that score just looks funny.
ALMOST doesn't seem fair?
No doubt the chemistry is there... No doubt the talent is there... This season looks bright.
just went full "Not Just A Shooter" on Stauskas. It was finish-your-drink worthy.
Too busy posting on this shit and didn't know the 2nd half started...what did I miss?
Clearly 18 points in 5 minutes.
You missed Stauskas being more than just as shooter, GRIII thinking he is part of NBA Jam, and a demonstration of how to offensive rebound.
...if you think I won't rewatch this game when it's on BTN Thursday night, you're crazy.
Am I wrong for thinking this team could be better than last year?
Last year's team almost (and should've) won the National Championship.
That said, I know what you mean. That's a big "COULD." They are going to have to get better each game, and they should.
I've had the same thoughts... A year of experience and the off-season have proven to be huge in these guys' development... I'm excited.
I think we need to step off the gas now... This is starting to be embarrassing.
And you have guys in all new roles. I know it's embarassing, but think about that. Not one player except maybe Jon Horford is even remotely in a role he played last year.
GRIII needs rep at the 3. LeVert needs PT. Stauskas needs rep as a top option. Morgan even needs reps at the 4.
...you all still think he's overrated?
Suck on that. Let it soak in for a second.
Ya the really impressive part is the high shooting percentage to go with it.
...then goes Trey Burke with the behind the back steal. (loses it out of bounds)
We're playing great, but way too soon to talk about being better than last year. We'll have some non-conference tests coming up to figure that out, hopefully with McGary back.
I'm looking forward to seeing in the remaining time:
First of Donnal.
Concordia or not. That was stupid.
He'll be expected to shoot 35+% from that distance.
Who wins, GRIII or Concordia?
What is the score? I have very limited access right now?
101 - 29, 9 minutes left in the 2nd half.
101 - 29 and still over 9 minutes to play.
Thanks, I am at work and have to sneak on my phone and the blog was on.
...plus Beilfelt and one other.
100 pts with 9+ mins to go.... sweet jesus
Pull it out and run the offense. Be aggresive, don't sit on it and look ugly. But force yourself to get good layups.
Stauskas BODY WORK muscles beast mode.
Also, Horford looks good in here with his rebounding. We don't need a scorer. We need a glue guy with energy, defensive movement, and rebounding. Both Morgan and Horford seem to fit very well.
Shooters go cold. You've got to have at least SOME production inside. Look how effecient we got when McGary showed up in the tournament?
Look at MSU last year with their big men (who I can't stand)...when they gave them at least a little something the team played so much better.
Horford still too soft once he gets those o-rebounds. Even in this game he's gotten a couple and gotten the ball knocked away on the putback.
As long as Mitch gets his buckets inside I don't mind if horford/Morgan are just energy guys with tough D and rebounding
A little over 8 minutes left...
Clearly we are superior in every area against this team. Yes, we are on fire and are playing with good chemistry, but we are playing against a team that can't shoot and can't defend.
Yes, kind of.
Remember when these were the types of games where we'd only be up 10 or 12 points late? Don't have to look too far back in the past.
We aren't winning any Big 10 titles tonight, but I'm glad we aren't going to come away with a lot to complain about.
They've scored 7 points in the last 2 minutes and they're on the line to make it 8.
I just checked the score praying it wouldn't be close but damn
Until under 10 to play in the game GRIII was beating Concordia by four.
I jokingly "predicted" 121-33 earlier today. While I obviously expected them to win huge, I didn't expect it to this extent. AWESOME
At what point do we start to feel bad?
Dang, that shooting percentage.
At one point do we pull the back ups and throw in 5 random maize ragers?
...we're ready made to compete even without the freshman. I think it's going to take a little bit for either to crazy the starting lineup and I don't know if Irvin ever will. But that's a GOOD thing. Allow them to get some time gaining experience because we only need them as depth at this point.
LeVert has matured. Stauskas and GRIII have gotten better. Our post guys are still the same (which is fine) + we have McGary who we haven't seen. Spike seems very comfortable at the point...picking up right where he left off.
Another off balance shot that had no reason to be off balance.
All 3 freshman along with Spike and Max B. 113-38.
Donnal with a block on defense and long range on offense.
I wonder why he hasn't played more tonight. He's going to be buried because of the experience ahead of him. But this is a great time to get some PT.
As you said, he's made a couple plays. He looks comfortable...I think he may be able to get Beilfelt/McLimas minutes easy.
Classic long range Beilein stretch 4. Looks effortless from deep.
So Donnal looks comfortable shooting the ball then
I deserve a cookie of predicting 137-42 last night
Put in Darko!
Look at these boys throw up the 3s!
It will be interesting to see how Dakich commentates on Michigan games this year, with his son being on the team and all.
Holy cow, this is like the old Loyola Marymount teams.
That is one way to describe it I guess.
I am disappointed...didn't get 60 in the second half.
73 pt win. Alrighty then.
Everyone looks pretty darn good
Nik Stauskas +/- tonight: +103
Pretty sure it is clear Donnal was gonna be redshirted.
He's a lot more intriguing than Bielfeldt
- Yee buddy
- Walton will take over the starting point guard position before Big Ten play starts. Spike's stroke still looks pure and at times he looks more poised, but Walton is a better defender and is oh-so-creative. Both will impress.
- Irvin reminds me of THJr. his freshman year. Good tools, just needs to work on decision-making. But he's got a quick release, great athleticism. Defensively he gets lost on off-the-ball screens sometimes, but experience will cure that.
- You know what's awesome about that bullet? THJr. was our second option offensively his freshman year. Irvin looks to be our fourth option ON THE WING. Stauskas, LeVert, and GRIII all look like they can fill it up quite well. Without much pressure, Irvin will be able to pick his spots and I think he will come up big when we need him to.
- LeVert will not average 10 assists a game this year. But 4 is not out of the question. He has great court vision and when he drives the defense cannot be sure whether he will pass or take it himself. He still looks a bit skinny (and this could limit him offensively against some teams in the B1G) but defensively he looks like the monster we expected. Quicker, long, and much better instincts this year. We are going to be able to cause some fits with the length of LeVert, GRIII, Irvin,
- Horford is Horford. Long, suffocating defender who occasionally leaves his feet too early. Not a great offensive player. Good rebounder. Size and rebounding is all we need him.
- Morgan looks to have improved though. Looked better shooting free throws and even looked comfortable dribbling the ball a little bit. Between him and Horford, we should be able to weather McGary's storm.
- Oh yeah, Mitch McGary didn't play and we won by 73. Just thought I'd mention that.
- At this point, Donnal should play over Bielfeldt. I think this will be like the Vogrich/LeVert situation last year. Vogrich's experience gave him the benefit of the doubt, but in the end the talent difference was overwhelming. Donnal has a pure stroke from downtown, looks physically ready, is taller, and a heady offensive player. I don't think he should redshirt.
Hope Michigan did the classy thing and served them pancakes after the game... pancakes.
22 missed shots seems like quite a bit, but when you shoot 82% in the first half and 53% in the second for a 65.1% average I guess that's not bad eh?
22 missed shots isn't many to begin with.
Maybe it isn't, I might not be calibrated correctly and expectations could be out-of-whack. When I saw 22 missed shots I thought "seems like a lot" but then didn't compare it to anything. I'm certainly open to it not being a lot.
I mean, the students from Concordia always seemed ike pleasant folk. Not very polite of us to eviscerate their basketball team
People applauded when they scored
You don't think they scheduled the game to win...do you?
I'm sure they scheduled for some of the same reasons me, you and 3 other MGoBloggers would schedule to play the #9 Michigan Wolverines if we could.
Are you going to be hurt when we lose by 100?
You'll hear people talk about how they played so-and-so in high school, and so-and-so is now in NFL. Those guys from last year will be telling their grandkids how they played against the one and only Burke in Crisler and gave UM a scare.
Saw some highlights and read the box score. Happy to see Walton successful early. That poor kid might be compared to Trey for as long as he's at UM. I'm glad to see he didn't wilt under that pressure. We have tickets for Nov 8 -- can't wait to watch them play live!
