8 unburned red shirts left

Submitted by reddogrjw on

QB Peters - tons of depth in front of him

RB Walker - focus on academics

G Spanellis - needs to develop

DE Kemp - needs to develop

DE R. Johnson - needs to develop

LB Gil - needs to develop

LB Mbem Bosse - needs to develop

K Nordin - not needed

I only maybe see Mbem Bosse as still burning a red shirt (unless injuries demand it of course)

Did not notice Nate Johnson playing last week, but mgoblog as the ! next to his name as burned red shirt so I assume he did

Thoughts?  seems like these guys will all red-shirt to you?

edit - spelling fix :)

That one made no sense to me.  He basically came in for a couple of two TE formations at the end and looked completely out of his depth blocking wise and looked really tiny next to whomever he was replacing.  My buddy and I were both wondering who #18 was and both commented at the same time that it better not be Eubanks and gave each other annoyed looks when we saw it was him.

Yeah, I've never really bought the whole "punting and plackicking is too much work for one guy" argument.  I remember ST3 figuing out in one of his Inside the Box Scores that special teams are about 1/6 of the game.  If we assume that half of those plays will be with M kicking and half with the opponent kicking, then that means the kicker would be on the field for 1/12 of the game's snaps--that's not a huge workload.

If there is a workload concern, I suspect it would not be so much in the actual games as in practice.  I'd imagine kickers to a lot of individual drills so if you have to do all the placekicking drills and then turn around and do all the punting drills on top of that, it seems that could add up.

There's also a concentration/focus/visualization aspect to it. That was my immediate thought when he dropped that punt snap. Seems they are looking for someone who can reliably do the kickoffs so Allen doesn't have to think about/prepare himself for that.

Honestly the way we've been burning redshirts I wouldn't be surprised if we see mbem-bosse, Kemp, gill(special teams)...maybe walker and Nordin at some point this season. I hope this does not happen.

I really don't think having kicked once, a year ago, will help him in his first attempt next season. In addition, we've had plenty of kickers, including Kenny Allen, who have been good enough from the first kick. Allen had never attempted a FG before last year and went 18/22.

At this point, I would think that the pace of redshirt arson would slow considerably if not stop altogether. I could be wrong about this, but Harbaugh seems like the sort that if he thought there was a chance for a kid to see action right away, then he pre-selected those players and has no plans to dig further into the redshirts. It seems like that would be the case especially with Colorado - who could probably put up a slightly better fight than UCF - and then the Big Ten looming.

there's not many more redshirts to burn but I don't think Harbaugh goes into the season with a plan of who he is going to redshirt.  Harbaugh says it all the time and it gets repeated all the time, the best players are going to play.  Higdon and Newsome didn't lose their redshirts until later in the season last year.  Outside of probably Peters, if any of those remaining 7 guys who haven't played yet start kicking a** in practice and move up the depth chart, they'll probably see the field.

Burned my red shirt. I wasn't gonna wait for Jimmy to do it for me. He might never get around to that given my relative insignificance to Michigan Football.

really see any of those guys burning a red shirt.  Maybe Mbem Bosse.  Maybe.  I'm looking forward to seeing what Kemp can do.  I think he's going to be fun to watch.  Thanks for posting this list.  I was wondering who hasn't seen the field yet.

Gotta say, this is the one area of concern thus far in the Harbaugh era...I know we'll recruit well, but man how nice would it be to have a guy like Houma this year or guys like Thomas and Gedeon next year...
