#77

Would you be in favor of the return of #77?  If so, which of our offensive lineman deserves to wear it?

LTT is already wearing Dan Deirdorf's old number.  That's kind of a big deal, I think.  Deirdorf was talking about his old number during the spring game.  He said even to this day when he hears a penilty called with that number he's looking over his shoulder for Bo.  I think wearing any number at Michigan is a big deal.

It's the same concept, though. You are switching jersey numbers because of the accomplishments of another guy with the same number.

If a guy REALLY wants to change numbers, then fine. However, the reason that numbers like 77 and 21 are famous is because of the players who wore them. The default should be that a kid should create his own legacy. As Jabrill once said, he isn't at Michigan to be the next Woodson. He wants to be the best Jabrill that he can be.

Now, for me the #1 jersey has a different quality to it because it's not a random number. There is something different about "1". However, I'm not even sure that that argument holds up to scrutiny. Would I rather Gallon have stayed with #10 or switched to #1? I'm not sure.

Enough with the changing of jersey numbers. Give it to Erik Swenson nexy year, the freshman who wore it in HS.

now that the "Legends Patch" thing is over with and all your patches are obsolete, you're no longer a fan.

I forgot how terrifying Jake Long looked. Dude was a beast.

That being said, I don't want anyone to switch their numbers. Let them make their own numbers famous. If one of the new recruits wants 77 (probably Erik Swenson) they can have it and try to add on to its legacy.

I could see mason cole moving inside. He seems more like a guard. I think him starting at LT last season was more of a sign of where the line was rather than where he was

Did any of the guys in your post switch to 77 or did they have 77 since they arrived on campus?  This whole thing of earning a number at some point in your career for every single number that we like as fans/a program is ridiculous.  77 can just be a number a lineman gets as a freshman if available.  Let him live up to the "expectations" of the number.

This opinion may not be popular but I'm getting kind of annoyed by fans trying to assign a Messianic nature to so many different numbers. The #1 is a special thing that sort of evolved naturally after decades of great receivers. Now every time we have a Great player people want to anoint their jersey number. I say other than #1 just let players wear whatever number and let these things happen on their own.

Meaning it is not a retired number. Whoever wants to wear it should know the legacy of those who wore it before but it shouldn't be earned or forced on anyone. Only the number 1 or 2 should be treated this way.
To me a kid should have to express interest in the 1 or 2 and explain to the coaches and team why they deserve it then demonstrate in practice and on the field. The previous bearer of said jersey should then pass the torch by coming back to present the jersey to the honored player - pre-game ceremony style!

I can imagine this conversation:

Player: "Coach, I think I've earned the right to wear #77."

Harbaugh: "What difference does a number make?  Will it make you play better?"

Player: "Well, some great Michigan offensive linemen have worn #77."

Harbaugh: "Are you those players?"

Player: "Well, no."

Harbaugh: "I ask again ... what difference does a number make?  Are you the kind of player that needs a certain number to play your own personal best?"

Player: "No."

Harbaugh: "Is there anything else?"

Player: "No, coach.  No.

My point -- I have a hard time believing Harbaugh gives a rat's ass about who wears what number.  I doubt he cares one bit about the #1 or #2 or #77.  The only thing he seems to care about is each player do their very best, and to be improving every day.

Great idea.  How about uniformz and the varous mean things that Dantonio & Meyer seem to do that warrant our constant attention?

I'm with you.  I'm so fucking sick of talking about numbers and "earned jersey's" and legends and whatnot I could barf.  It reminds me of my 10 year old's fierce debate yesterday with his buddy over which warrior cat clan was the best.
