Denard Robinson

Robinson played a limited role behind Tate Forcier his freshman year.

As a sophomore in 2010, Robinson set the single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback and became the only player in NCAA history to both pass and rush for 1,500 yards. Robinson also broke the Big Ten season record with 4,272 yards of total offense and led the conference in rushing. In his second start at quarterback against Notre Dame, he set the Michigan single-game record with 502 yards of total offense. He was awarded the 2010 Chicago Tribune Silver Football as the Most Valuable Player in the Big Ten. He also set the Big Ten single-game record for rushing yards by a quarterback and became the only player in history to both pass for 200 yards and rush for 200 yards in a regular season game twice.

As a junior in 2011, Robinson led a resurgent Michigan team to an 11–2 record and a victory over Viginia Tech in the 2012 Sugar Bowl. He threw for a career-high 338 passing yards in a come-from-behind victory over Notre Dame in the first night game played at Michigan. At the end of the 2011 season, Robinson had eight of the top 10 single-game total offense totals in Michigan history, including 948 yards in two games against Notre Dame. His total offense output in 2010 (4,272 yards) and 2011 (3,348 yards) rank as the top two single-season totals in Michigan history. As a senior in 2012, he extended his record with a third game with both 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing.

Denard Robinson was drafted 135th overall by the Jacksonvill Jaguars.

He did give us a lot to smile about. His abilities and stats were fun to see, but at the end of the day, those teams he played on make one yearn for the days of a dominant, tough-nosed defense. Everyone loves putting up crazy numbers in Madden or NCAA whatever year, but in real life, winning a game 67-65 makes one cry on the inside.

You failed to mention (a) he is made of dilithium, (b)) his smile can power a mid-sized city and (c) the pure Colombian joy that was Don Criqui in the final 0:30 of UTL. Thank you Denard, thank you.

I still almost feel bad for Don Criqui, who has now been waiting patiently for that signal for almost five years now. Did anyone ever check to make sure he was OK? Maybe at least bring him some Jimmy John's, a pop and the paper so he can do a crossword while he waits for the signal? I'd hat to think we didn't at least do something hospitable for such a dedicated individual.

I was watching the UTL game on BTN yesterday and I thought what an athlete. Robinson is one of my favorites and his smile is infectious. That GIF of him at the MBB dancing is awesome.

One of the most exciting players I've ever seen. I remember a friend of mine who is very connected in Broward County football telling me prior to his freshman season that Denard was a special kind of athlete, and he would turn some heads in the Big 10 very early. Turns out he only needed one play.

for people praising the athlete instead of bitching about the poll... Denard carried us all through the transition from RR to Hoke. That could have been so much more worse than it was, and #16 has an awful lot to do with that.

That smile...  I was living in the neanderthal Siberian backwoods that is the Detnews and Freep comment sections until I found Tahiti (this place, if you must be told).  It was brutal, and I would always say to those morons who decried his attributes (and there are still plenty) that Bo would have given his left nut to coach DRob at QB.  You think Franklin and Leach ran that option pretty well?  I'd give my left nut to see DRob run Bo's option play with either Huckleby or Lytle swinging wide with him.

But the endearing memory I have is that God-awful Nobody Bowl against Miss St.  DRob is the only player on the field that left everything he had out there.  Regardless of the hit he took, he bounced up with that smile and ran back to the huddle.  His teammates were only going through the motions - they quit.  Rich Rod quit.  The entire team quit - except for DRob.  That is my memory of DRob - giving everything he had, with that HUGE, ever present smile...

Similarly, my enduring memory of Denard is the Alabama opener where he was pounded. I remember he received a shot to his lower back at one point that made me wince and hope he stayed out. But he didn't. He didn't win that game. But goddamn did he play with as much heart as anyone I've ever seen wearing the winged helmet. It wasn't the electricity that I remember most about Denard. It was his amazing toughness, spirit, and leadership. He embodies Michigan Football to me. And I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.

He was electrifying... Had me on the edge of my seat, every play. You just knew he could take it the distance every time he touched the ball.

My four years as a student began with Rich Rod's hiring, so Denard was a welcomed bit of excitement and positivity in an otherwise down time of the program's history.

And......

Gary Grant

Rudy Tomjanovich

Brendan Morrison

Marty Turco

Red Berenson

Barry Larkin

Rob Lytle

And a bunch of football players from the 60's and earlier that the voters have never heard of.

FWIW I've got the final five as:

#5 - Tyrone Wheatley

#4 - Desmond Howard

#3 - Anthony Carter

#2 - Tom Harmon

#1 - Charles Woodsen

And Denard might've have been the best-liked Michigan athlete on all time.  But #6 in terms of atcual athletic achievements me thinks he's a wee bit over-valued.

But hey, I must confess.  I'm shocked he's not #1 in this poll.

comes in against Western for his first play.   Drops the snap, picks it up, puts down a pair of sweet moves before giving us our first look at his burst.

Still brings tears to my eyes.

Thinking more along the lines of top athlete(physical specimen) and athletic measurables (strength, speed etc.) I might put coach Wheatley #1 with Woodson a close 2. Tyrone was a rare beast in Bo Jackson territory.

and one of the best personalities ever. I'm one of those cranky old guys about how this poll has evolved, but I've got no issues with this one. Rare is the occasion when Michigan has the fastest guy on the field, so the Denard era will always hold a special place in my heart.
