50/50 Meme

In Brian's post he said the lieklihood of RR's tenure surviving was down to 50/50. It seems everyone has speculated on the amount of wins he needs to survive next year or the year after. As we move forward I would like when people are sharpening their knives after a loss to ND or handing out lifetime contracts after a win against OSU that you examine the current and the prospects for the future and not the past. I think so many bad decisions in sports are made on the bounce of a ball. I laughed yesterday when Wade Phillips was retained in Dallas. All the insiders said he had to win a playoff game to save his job. So he's coached for 3 years and Jerry Jones has dealt with him everyday and watched him in practice and in games and had him describe what went wrong and why it did and after all that he decided his fate is decided on what happens in this 1 game. Is he a great coach that can win a Super Bowl I have no idea, but I would think Jerry Jones would have known what his own opinion was long before last weekends games and regardless of what the outcome would have made the best decision for his squad. How this relates to Michigan is that I hope people(most importantly D. Brandon) base RR's future on the job that he is doing currently and not previous records. I stil see a team that has BCS written all over it for 2011 and my fear is that RR's future will be tied to things out of his control like a 6 game losing streak to OSU and the attrition that Misopogan has spelled out for us. Some people will say it's excuses I like to try and differentiate between excuses and explanations and make a rational decision. I would like to think if Mich is 6-6 next year and D. Brandon calls RR into his office and says WTF?? and RR says "well we have 10 returning starters on offense next year that have been in the system for 3 years and on defense we return 8 starters, I finally have depth at all the positions, Barwis has everyone in shape, the future looks great." I hope Brandon doesn't say "well that sounds good and I like you, I like the way you run your practices, I've talked to the kids they like you and you're well respected by the coaches I have consulted, but if Shaw had just gotten in on that 4th and goal and we were 7-5 I could sell that better. You are fired." Then we have to start over again when we were on the cusp. I understand there is a risk in holding on to a loser to long as well, but I think we really need to watch next year closely for progress and not just blindly rage on something that was coming the last few years regardless of coach. Last year was a big year of ifs that I think injuries really derailed. I have been frustrated by our play of late, but when I look at RR I see a coach with past success, that works hard, drives his players hard and is well respected by other coaches that has been hampered by bizarre circumstances. I just don't want to end up like the Cleveland Browns who gave up on Bellichick.

Well I think evaluation of RR is necessary and fair seeing as he is the coach at Michigan. I agree that 2011 looks like a BCS caliber year, BUT that's assuming constant improvement from this year to two years from now. If the team stumbles next year without any explainable reason(I.e going 5-7 would not be as bad if we had a freak occurrence like Wash St did a couple years back where they lost 4 QBs), then RR just might not be the right guy. I fully believe that RR will succeed at Michigan but again evaluation just comes with job and back to back losing seasons.

That ratio seems way off to me. I wonder what sort of performance/record that is based on. In my view, 7-5 brings Rodriguez back for certain (another two-win improvement, bowl bid, not to mention all the positive factors going into 2011 the OP mentioned). So I guess my question is does Brian have a different view of what sort of record/performance will get Rodriguez canned or does he really think there is only a 50/50 chance the team reaches 7-5 (which I would disagree with since I think next year's team will be much improved and only a few bad breaks kept last year's squad from that same record).

only a few bad breaks kept last year's squad from that same record). You do realize that only a few lucky breaks also kept us from 3-9 again? It took last second heroics to beat ND AND Indiana . . . . (yes THAT Indiana). We got EXACTLY the record we deserved. WWIW I think we can hit 7-5 next year, and I hope it's enough to keep RR at the helm.

The question is how we're going to get to 7-5 Here's how I'm seeing the schedule: Should win - 2 - Bowling Green (bowl team?), UMass Michigan lean - 2 - @Purdue, @Indiana Tossup - 4 - MSU, Illinois, @ND, UConn Opponent lean - 2 - Wisconsin, Iowa Likely loss - 2 - @PSU, @OSU Hopefully we can eke out 7 wins against that schedule. Luckily the two games we probably weren't going to win are on the road, increasing our chances in the remaining B10 home games.

I view all four of your toss-ups as games where Michigan will/should be favored (I actually think @Purdue will be a bigger test than all four of those except maybe @ND depending on how their depth chart looks come September). Outside of Wisconsin, Iowa, and OSU, I don't fear anybody on the schedule (and we get two of those teams at home). Again, I expect Michigan to be much improved next year (which some may disagree with), but that being said I don't think 7-5 should be a problem with that schedule.

I agree 99%. If RR goes 6-6 in 2010, it's pretty clear he can't win with his system and loads of returning starters. I think he will though, and the universe will be restored to its proper order.

2011 is the year, please let him show what he can do with a seasoned qb. As long as they don't have a losing season this year, I'll still be hopeful.

So what happens if we have a key injury (Tate) next season and we don't go 6-6? Will that mean RR is fired? I sure hope not. I think basing a mans job security on wins and losses on one season is horse shit. I think RR deserves to live out the length of his contract win or lose.

If we lose Tate (shudder) I still lay plenty of responsibility on RR shoulders. He is the head coach, and he makes sure he recruits and trains backups for every position, including the all important QB. THAT is why it's foolish to consider Denard as anything other than a QB until Gardner is ready to play. It's RR's job to make sure Denard gets enough snaps in practice to come in and play if necessary. Now, I agree that circumstances matter (as well as improvement every year) and I'd certainly cut RR some slack if Tate got hurt. Sure the team might stumble . . . but a complete implosion? That would be bad, and IMHO reflect some pretty poor management.

but DEAD ON. The argument usually cited for firing coaches is "unacceptable to fanbase", which is sort of self-fulfilling but also ignores the silent majority of rational minded fans who realize that random chance plays a role and that the alternative new coach du jour is not necessarily any more likely to produce a successful outcome. (e.g. Even if you brought in Harbaugh after 2010 he'd have to spend another few years to get experienced personnel for his style of play, which probably means several more years of mediocrity.) You fire RR only when he proves he can't do the job, which would take a few more seasons barring some catastrophe.

Our best chance of success is with Rich Rod. My biggest fear regarding the football team is that Rodriguez is fired and Harbaugh is hired. It'd be another 3 year project.

The retooling/rebuilding job RR has had to do to modernize the program, not to mention being left with a disaster at the QB position, takes awhile. The QB position is still extremely thin, and RR should not be blamed if Forcier is injured. Look at what happened to Oklahoma last season when Bradford went down. I really think this team wins eight games this year, and would have without injuries to Molk and Forcier last year. When they do, this oft-repeated thread will become moot as well as redundant.

I have to be honest here: I want Rich and this team to succeed. I support the team, so I support the coach. But another depressing Big Ten run, and I'm not sure I can keep saying well maybe 2012 Big Ten Title, maybe 2013, etc. .... My biggest concerns: I am not seeing how we achieve major defensive improvement year to year. Especially with Warren leaving. Tailback is an open switch. Youth everywhere (particularly on the aforementioned defense). Yes, in 2010 there are players in their third season in the system, and at least in year two of the defensive scheme. That said 2010 will be a true test of coaching ability. Rich and staff will have to coach their asses off to make up for inexperience, and potential key injuries. I just hope they are successful, ass-less coaches by bowl season next year.

Nothing much to add. I hope that Mary Sue, Dave Brandon, Martin, and the Regents will stay the course through 2011. I like RR, believe he will succeed if given the chance, and think he simply came into a terrible situation not of his own making. To be fair, he has made some mistakes, but we all do.

I am fully behind RR. Like many people on this board have stated RR needs time to build his team. I don't like the losing records, the bad performance in the Big Ten but people need to see the bigger picture. Our ADD society is now built on instant gratification and no one has any patience. I believe RR should get the full life of his contract before his fate is decided. As far as speculating on what UMs record will be next year I just don't know. I think all the games on the schedule will be tough and last season this team might as well have been named the cardiac kids. There are just too many ifs. If Molk is heatly, If Tate can stay healthy, If a steady running back can emerge etc. The Defense, well I don't even want to go there. I want RR to keep his job, so I hope the team can win enough games for that to happen.
