5 silent commits
Ok like most I recieved this email from go wolverine the other day and thought is was interesting... I know about Grimes Murphy and Furman but who are our other two supposed "silent" commits
Are there any spots left in the Michigan recruiting class?
With 23 commitments ... are there five more 'silent commits'?

Fine, whatever. But as to your original question, he is a Pro-Style QB, so I'm guessing that U-M will not go after him

if he comes to Michigan, he will spend his entire career as Devin Gardner's backup, at best.

After a week of Tiger Woods porn titles, Brian Kelly, Brian Kelly's DC etc. even speculation about M recruiting is pleasant. I would be pretty happy if we happened to get Ash and Hankins along with the previously mentioned Grimes, Furman, Murphy.

Johnathan Hankins made his official visit to Ohio State this weekend as scheduled. He discusses the trip with Bucknuts.com including ranking his college choices in order.
After making official visits to Virginia, Florida and Michigan in that order, Detroit (Mich.) Southeastern defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins was in Columbus for his official visit to Ohio State.
“I really liked it,” Hankins said. “The players were real cool, like (DeVier) Posey. I talked mostly to the people on the defensive line. Keith Wells and then Solomon (Thomas) were my hosts. I vibed real well with all of them. I had a good time.”
When asked what else impressed him on the visit, Hankins said, “I liked the tutoring program they have. Every class they have a tutor for you if you need it.”
Going into his visit to Ohio State, Hankins had Florida at the top of his list. He was asked if that has changed.
“Yeah, Ohio State is on top,” Hankins said. “I was thinking about committing, but not right now. My dad is kind of sick, so I’m thinking about staying close to home. (Ohio State) might be the place to go.”
Where does that leave Michigan, the closest school to home for Hankins?
“I liked Michigan, but they are on the bottom right now,” Hankins said. “Ohio State is No. 1, Florida is two and Michigan is three.”
Hankins said he probably won’t take any other official visits.
“I’ll probably decide by the end of next week,” he said. “But maybe sooner.”
The 6-foot-3 and 310-pound Hankins made 85 tackles including 12 sacks as Southeastern finished with a 10-1 record.

M is at the bottom "right now". Since he wants to stay closer to home doesn't that rule out Florida?

Ash may be an academic concern, I think.

What is the logic behind someone being a "silent commit." Do they not announce their commitment because they want to make it a special event (like at the AA game or whatever), but still want to hold their place in the recruiting class?
December 13th, 2009 at 8:12 PM ^
If a recruit silently commits in the woods and no one is around to hear it, did the recruit actually commit?
December 13th, 2009 at 8:38 PM ^
Sam Webb would still hear it.
December 13th, 2009 at 10:10 PM ^
I submit that his gut would feel it.
December 14th, 2009 at 4:50 AM ^
LOL I would hope so
December 13th, 2009 at 8:14 PM ^
recruits will silent commit to avoid outside pressure from people wanting them to commit elsewhere.
December 14th, 2009 at 12:20 AM ^
Wouldn't giving an actual verbal commitment decrease the outside pressure even more? Why give a silent commit for that reason?
December 14th, 2009 at 12:26 AM ^
but by making a commitment, you open yourself up to questioning about said commitment. If you don't openly commit, you don't have to defend your position; you can simply state that you have not yet made a decision.
