4 Opening Invites for Michigan commits from Columbus NFTC

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Thought this deserved its own thread. 6 of Michigan's commits attended the Columbus NFTC and 4 of them walked away with invites to the Opening: Taco Charlton, Shane Morris, Mike McCray, David Dawson.

The Opening @TheOpening2012

S/O to 7 invites from Ohio #NFTC for 2012 #THEOPENING - Shane Morris, David Dawson, Billy Price, Taco Charlton, Mike McCray, Cam Burrows & Jalin Marshall

McCray was the LB MVP, Dawson was the OL MVP, and Morris was the Elite11 MVP yesterday.

Pretty solid weekend for the class of 2013.  Best summary of the day provided by former Ohio All-American OL LeCharles Bentley:

LeCharles Bentley @LeCharlesBent65

Hate to admit it but #Michigan has some really good OL/DL in the fold. #TacoCharlton could be next Simeon Rice. Loads of talent in trenches.

What was also a surprise...Shane has put some work in to his body, lifting weights, etc. Dude is much bigger than his junior tape, atleast 200 pounds about 6'3 id say. Calm, cool, collected....a little cocky even. On one of the drills  where its the QBs throwing to the WRs on one on one drills with the CB, cam burrows was playing corner against someone, name slips my mind, and got beat over the top..wasnt the greatetst throw, but right on target(like all of shames throws today), and the WR beat him for the TD. Cam doesnt have the best hips. Anyways, as Cam was jogging back....Shane started yelling to him, "4 more years, get ready for that for 4 more years". Was good stuff. Then the next playc Jaylin Marshall completely outclassed his counterpart for a TD, anf Cam came back at Shame after looking at Jaylin saying "4 more years baby".

Jalin surprised me at WR, I looked at him as more of a raw athlete than a polished WR. He showed great technique, obviously he's been training it. Though he won't be a true WR in Herman's system, it's interesting to see him show instinct after being a QB through high school. Kind of the same way Gardner surprised you guys in practice.

Haha I love it.

This is what the rivalry really is guys...not taking potshots at someone's family, fanbase, or stupid condescension of the rival's program.

This rivalry is pure competitiveness, with the award of bragging rights, and the pure satisfaction of kicking your opponents ass.

It's not driven by hate or disgust. It's fueled by competition, and mutual respect. That's the kind of stuff that made it the best damn game of the year, every year, in the first place.

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm of 11 Warriors origins, just as some reassurance. I would never post on bucknuts or any other site where ignorance and small-mindedness rules, rather than debate, and information. I was driven to make an account by the input on 11w from a few posters on our site (@mman, @hail @rational, you here?) and out of appreciation for their input on 11w, i decided to do the same.

In summary,  I don't condone the actions of some of my peers, please don't judge us all from a few posters, and I won't do the same to you.

On 247 Sports, UM and MSU "share" a thread. I don't check too often, but it is about 40% discussion and 60% flaming typically, and not all of it can be blamed on Sparty. Some people would rather sling mud than discuss and learn.

So, what are you all thinking for your 2012? Predicting 8 wins, but hoping for 9? I know that Braxton wasn't the height of accuracy last year, but he was a devil to bring down. I honestly didn't see a huge dropoff from him to Pryor, and he can only get better . . .

Let's say for the sake of empirics, we compare with last year. We lost to Nebraska, UM, Miami, Purdue, Michigan State, and Penn State. The Penn State, and Purdue games we basically beat ourselves. Let's say the offense increase by minimum 25% efficiency, which is reasonable. We win against PSU and Purdue, without QB controversy we beat Nebraska, and if Braxton makes deep throws consistently, we at least have a chance against you guys. Miami and MSU flat out beat us.

This year, we don't really have a nonconference test. So we'll say 4-0 by the time conference play starts.

If the offense pans out, we lose what I think will be conservative minimum 2, conservative maximum 4 games between UM, Nebraska, Wisconsin, MSU, and PSU.

Reasonably, I'd say 9-3, just because we won't have suspensions, QB controversy, or true freshman QB. We lose because we can't generate offense to the maximum of the system without a true slot guy or major playmakers, but with a deep RB stable, and production in the slot from Jordan Hall, we win games just because the spread gives us enough options that Braxton can win tough 4th quarters with his legs alone. I'll say 10-2, but that's optimism, and +2 losses, or +1 win, wouldn't be a shock to me.

Most "reasonable" M fans weren't honestly expecting 11 wins last year, but strange things happen. Also, you never know who will show up at the right time. Last year, after Posey had all that time off, I really didn't expect him to light us up. I knew he was a good player, but I just figured that he'd have too much rust and not enough chemistry. He really gave us headaches though. I'm also interested in seeing how PSU bounces back from the events of their offseason. Things like that can be distracting, but they can also lead to that "us against the world" team unity that can make a team tough. And then Wiscy with another "rented" QB should make another interesting Big Ten season . . . .

Id blame the Posey scenario more on the underachieving Michigan secondary in that game. He didn't play outstanding, but when you put a top class WR, chemistry or not, in a secondary that gets lost in coverage from time to time, he'll burn you.

I don't think Penn State will be great, but I didn't last year and they still had an impressive season, all things considered.

I agree with you on Wisconsin, but remember, this isn't a veteran, highly acclaimed "rental" like Russell. He's unproven, and worked in a terrible offense for the past year, where he became pretty much stagnant. Expect him to perform well under an excellent staff for player development, but consider him like a top-end HS prospect that needs grooming before he can succeed, only with two fewer years of eligibility.

I thought Jalyin lacked technique and route running, but got better. Still needs work, but a gifted athlete and should shine in Urbans offense. Very strong kid, yet smooth. Sorta glides.

Shoulders still banged up hadda pass set wit 1 arm but competed n my teammate won OL MVP !

Old man translation: he's dealing with a shoulder injury, and his pass blocking was therefore hampered. However, he was pleased with his effort and was excited for David Dawson.

Thank you for that translation.

Every day, I feel a bit older.  I still haven't graduated from a Blackberry, and refuse to learn "Twitter-ese" (3 languages are enough, thanks).

With the good reviews for Ross, Resche, Hill, and whoever the WR was that won MVP, seems odd that all the Michigan and Ohio commits got the invites to the Openning. Seems they are just inviting the highest rated kids and not the best performers. Particularly since Marshal, Burrows, and Morris didn't even win MVPs today (although Morris won MVP for Elite 11 yesterday). Unless the selection process is independent of camp performance.

No surprise: David Dawson was their #1 performer.  The rest of their list is surprising though.  Their #2 performer was Malik McDowell (2014) from Detroit Loyola.  Also making their list was Damon Webb (2014) from Cass Tech and Johnny Reschke.  Another name mentioned that got a lot of buzz today: WR C'sonte York from Harper Woods Chandler Park.  No Taco Charlton or Mike McCray which was a little shocking.

I was there all day and got to see basically every prospect up close, field level. Shane Morris, Jaylin Marshall, Cam Burrows...were easily 3 of the best prospects there, by far. They are elite. Same goes to Jon Reschke, Ross Douglass, Billy Price, Taco, Mike McCra, David Dawson, Malik McDowell. They just stick out.
