4 Opening Invites for Michigan commits from Columbus NFTC

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Thought this deserved its own thread. 6 of Michigan's commits attended the Columbus NFTC and 4 of them walked away with invites to the Opening: Taco Charlton, Shane Morris, Mike McCray, David Dawson.

The Opening @TheOpening2012

S/O to 7 invites from Ohio #NFTC for 2012 #THEOPENING - Shane Morris, David Dawson, Billy Price, Taco Charlton, Mike McCray, Cam Burrows & Jalin Marshall

McCray was the LB MVP, Dawson was the OL MVP, and Morris was the Elite11 MVP yesterday.

Pretty solid weekend for the class of 2013.  Best summary of the day provided by former Ohio All-American OL LeCharles Bentley:

LeCharles Bentley @LeCharlesBent65

Hate to admit it but #Michigan has some really good OL/DL in the fold. #TacoCharlton could be next Simeon Rice. Loads of talent in trenches.

Strong weekend for Shane, and Dawson is really kicking butt lately. DD is starting to show some attitude, too. Love the way he protected the dummy with the M hat when they said it was Denard. Heck of a camp all around, and I'm glad to see Khalid Hill feeling heatlhy and getting to play.

Also, is anyone else kind of stunned by the presence that we are going to have at the UnderArmour AA Game? It is really going to make a statement. Also, on the off chance that we are still looking at any uncommitted recruits who are playing there, I have to think that they will be impressed.

I guess that confirms that LTT will be a bit of a project, with his weight, technique, etc. High ceiling nonetheless.

And my god, Billy Price's legs are like tree trunks.

Project seems a bit much especially from a kid who had offers from Alabama, USC, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.  This was a camp where the OL are at a disadvantage because it is only 1-on-1 pass blocking.  And there has been no official report or feedback on him. A lack of an invite to the Opening does not all of sudden make him a project.

Yes, he is not polished yet, but you can't teach the quickness he possesses at that size.  He has the highest ceiling of our OL commits--and it is probably not close.

Does David Dawson stoning BIlly Price in the 1-on-1s confirm that Billy Price is soft?

You recruit off potential. LTT is going to be fine , just right now he won't be starting in 2013. Still got a lot of time until he is actually on campus anyways. It was pretty cool seeing all the recruits there in Columbus decked out in Michigan gear

Slow down, everybody. To answer all responses, maybe I should clarify: I didn't mean project, like chore for the UM coaching staff. A good S&C coach, which you undoubtedly have, will do wonders for this kid, and he'll reach his potential, which as I said, is large.

As far as Price, I don't think it speaks to him being "soft" as much as it speaks to how good/underrated Dawson really is. He impresses everywhere, and we've already seen him jump in the rankings a few times. I wouldn't be shocked to see him end up a top-end 4 star on most sites, with variance.

Understandable, but these are mainly observations. LTT hasn't overly impressed, neither have some of our guys like, Jayme Thompson for example. Thompson is an above average athlete that has to improve his game a bit, LTT is agile for a guy of his size, and just needs to work on his build. It's impossible to make conclusions about juniors in high school, because you truly never know how these things will turn out.

I'm sure you guys have these archetypical examples of underrated high schoolers who went through your program, like we do in AJ Hawk: A guy who was underwhelming/underrated to and by the scouts and scouting process, and turned out to be a top guy at his position in OSU history.

For me to try and draw conclusions from camps would be downright ignorant, because I, like everyone else will never be able to know these things for sure, but things trend certain ways and it's not unreasonable to speculate. I'm not a guy who tries to split hairs or nitpick with your recruits because im not a Michigan fan. I have criticisms on aspects of recruits on both sides, but the point is, this is a crazy talented class that UM is pulling, and I look forward to seeing them on the field, in the spirit of being a football fan.

Were you there?  Are you basing this off one twitter comment, a picture, and a lack of an Opening invite?  It's not unreasonable to speculate, but it is when you don't justify your speculation with any kind of evidence.  There hasn't been a single article even posted yet about the camp today and almost nothing by live updates on how he performed.

The difference between AJ Hawk and LTT in this example is AJ Hawk was a lightly recruited 3 star.  LTT is a highly recruited 4 star that has already been invited to the Under Armour AA Game.

I was there for most of it, didn't have the greatest vantage point though. I wasn't directly comparing LTT and AJ Hawk, I was simply making a statement about the relative shot in the dark that is the recruiting ratings. To reiterate what I've said twice: LTT looks like a huge, talented kid, and with the right coaching it'll be fun to watch him play

Part of the reason he may not have looked as good is reportedly he had hurt his shoulder (according to Sam Webb). However, LTT has pretty much always been stated (in all the evaluations I've seen) as a guy with huge potential but needs to work on things to reach there. If you don't belive me look at his Hello post or TTB evaluation of him

I find it all in good fun. My instinct is to discount everything a Michigan fan says, and I understand wholly why you feel the same way and I think it's great for the rivalry. You can down me and my comments all you want, but I'm here for a differing viewpoint, and you'll never see me write any negative opinions about UM football or anything else for that matter (I was about an hour and a half drive away from going to UM, but the instate tuition made my decision for me here) .

Point is, I respect any Michigan fan that will engage me in civil discourse, and I know I can find those here, but I do understand the instinct within a rivalry being stubbornness to accept anything they say.

Dawson has had two very good showings at these Nike camps.

In three years, I wonder if we're going to be seeing a line like the 1999/2000 Oline with Williams, Backus, and Hutch.  Big shoes to fill, I know, but damn we have some talent in the trenches.

Someone needs to keep Ty Issac up to date on the potential of our O-line.

I agree, I am honestly not worried about a decommitment at this point. These guys show up at camps just to watch/cheer on our other recruits, I highly doubt they will be swayed at this point.

He jumped at the Michigan offer. He accepted even before Jourdan Lewis accepted and they were offered at the same time. He also had a Bama offer at that time too. Seems like he only really wanted that Michgan offer. Plus, you factor in chance for immediate playing time (we will graduate all three of our starting interior linemen this after this year) with only Bryant and Kalis as potential guards, then I don't think anyone has a chance at swaying him. We shall see though.

I'd like to see a big turnout for U-M at the NFTC in Champaign, IL next month. Hopefully this experience will motivate LTT, and he, Bosch, and some of the other MI and OH guys can get invites out to Oregon. There's a chance for some historic publicity for U-M in this class's exploits.

this Hoke fellow can recruit a little bit? Wow he is just a stud on the recruiting trail this last 2 years or 2 half classes and the one full one last year. If he keeps this up I can not see us the U of M winning at least 1 NC in the next 5 years. He is killing it.

i was in attendance today. Shane and Jaylin Marshall were the two best I saw. Ross Douglass is pretty damn good, great feet, great hips....good get for PSU. Taco Charlton is a freak, thats relly all I can say about him haha. David Dawson is jist a bulldog with nimble feet. Billy Price plays with a meanness that is unmatched, other than maybe Dawson. I thought Cam Burrows looked better than I though in 1 on 1s, he definitly held his own and LOOKs part. I was only so~so on Malik Zaire, not a get highlevel D1 QB, but I didnt get a chance to see his athleticism. Shane was the best QB I saw all day, by far. Kizer looks nice. Khalid Hill is much fluid than I though. Quick first step amd uses his body well, which was surprising big. Mike McCray may have been the bieggest surprise for me That kid is BIG, yet still lean. Lots of room for growth/muscle and a legit 6'3.

I think Kendall Fuller was there? Pretty sure I knew which one he was. Really nice player, id take him for aure. Slower than I expected, good looking athlete though. Was at WR, although thought he was a DB...so i wasnt aure. Whoever it was, he looked pretty big time.
