Who is going to commit with him after he commits?
4* OH LB McCray Sets Decision Date for 3/8
McCray & Levenberry. Talk about epic.
I saw "Steve Lorenz" in my twitter feed and thought "Who the hell is Steve Lorenz and why am I following him?"
Now things are making much more sense...Tremendous has a name.
Sounds like a good LB class to me.
Sounds great, but might be one too many
McCray is 6'4/240 I believe. Like Taco Charlton he's an enourmous high school linebacker who could naturally develop into a DE.
I don't think he takes a spot away from the likes of O'Daniel and Levenberry.
Which two top 50 linebackers would we prefer?
Our LB recruting has been a bit light the last 4-5 years and we'll only have 9 scholarship players (at best) and possibly less when the 2012 class arrives. Generally you want to be 4 deep or close to it at every position. If we can get 3 linebackers that are top notch I don't see why the coaches wouldn't take them.
Concern is that given the current scholarship numbers, 3 LBs will restict our ability to recruit other positions. I think we are at 18 now which means we have 5 scholies to give. However, word on the street is that coaches are recruiting for 22-23 class. Given some of the kids who will be 5 year seniors, there are a few who coaches might not ask back and there is always some attrition, so 3 LB probably is not too many especially given 2 play SAM (didn't get SAMS last year unless RJS moves there) and O'Daniel most likely would play WILL (or maybe MIKE) according to some (Magnus among others).
The big secret that will soon be revealed is that the 2014 class is loaded with LBs just at Cass Tech. The coaches are probably aware of this and probably goes into their big picture strategy.
William White. His dad played at OSU and for the Lions. I think this is the first ever major prospect from Cass that is an OSU legacy. Sopgmore starter.
Should watch this just for the background track. Hilarious.
Deon Drake. Another sophmore starter for Cass.
Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech linebackers William White (6-1, 220) and Deon Drake (6-1, 205) will be two of the top prospects in the state in the class of 2014. Both are good athletes with good size that move well.
William White is built like his dad.
Now that Gary Hosey has transferred to Cass, is that the best LB trio that has come out of a Michigan HS?
Of those 3 who do you think is the "best" right now?
Cass Tech will be scary next year if the rumors of Malik McDowell transferring there are true.
I haven't seen Hosey yet, but I think Drake is better than Will White. White looks like a future fullback or even a defensive lineman. I'm not sure he can stick at linebacker for a big school.
Sam Webb just tweeted about another LB from Ohio-Tinashe Bere. Don't know anything about him but I guess the kid can play.
Yeah...I've seen his film and haven't been impressed, but he's only a sophomore. There's some potential there, but I don't think he's anything to get particularly excited about right now.
How about some love for Gedeon? His film is some of the best I have seen.
oui s'il vous plait!
Si, mi piace.
un croissant avec un peu de toussaint.
Isaac will commit on 3/10 to round off the pair!
Looks like the LB dominoes could be the next to fall.
From ESPN (info in header)
The top of McCray's leader board is fluid depending on which new teams offer, but he has a top group of Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee. Kentucky and Penn State were among McCray's top group earlier this month but have since dropped.
From what Sam has talked about and what I remember the major player here would be Ohio if they offered b/c of his highschool. The fact that he set a date w/o an offer from them has to bode well. Right?
Ohio would be a player because his dad played there.
Ohio is pushing other LB's harder at the moment obviously though. An announcement date will force their hand one way or the other though on McCray.
Yes, it would seem that OSU legacies that potentially commit to the heated rival, would be recruits that you would need a contingency plan for.
I'm also curious on Ohio . . . why didn't they offer? There could be several reasons:
- They did offer, but it wasn't public knowledge.
- They don't like his skill level (or his fit for what they're looking for.)
- They don't need anyone at OLB.
- They have someone else coming in at OLB.
- They know McCray hates Ohio.
- As a corollary, they know McCray loves Michigan, so why bother with an offer?
I'd be curious to know what was the reason.
Urban has adopted a policy of not offering Michigan recruits in order to save face and maintain his status as "best recruiter in the country."
Urban Meyer, Legendary Recruiter™ is doing just that. It will be interesting to see if there is enough out there to really make that case.
As an OSU fan, I'm also puzzled why Meyer has yet to offer. He may be slow-playing him, which seems like a risky gamble. McCray setting an announcment date could be his way of forcing OSU's hand - 'either offer me now or you are out' deal.
I can, however, confidently rule out the last two options you set forth: McCray's dad played for OSU.
Who are the other lb's you guys are looking at?
In Ohio, I believe OSU has offered Courtney Love and Ben Gedeon.
Out of state top targets are Jaylon Smith (#1 overall target), Anzalone, Kimbrough -- in that order. A couple more on our radar, but those seem to be the most likely targets.
We have 2 offers to in-state LBers - Courtney Love and Ben Gedeon - these are likely committable offers. This is why McCray's lack of offer is so puzzling; McCray is ranked highed than both by every recruiting service.
It's interesting that McCray is ranked higer, but Love is the one with the offers from OSU, Oklahoma and USC.
He has an offer from Oklahoma, according to Rivals.
Thanks guys, i heard Kimbrough is still waiting on an offer. I have to believe that Mccray is forcing OSU to do something.
I don't know about totally ruling out the last two... My dad and sister were varsity athletes at Ohio, but I still hated them as a kid. Not saying he hates Ohio, just that it's possible.
I think he likes Ohio, but the lack of an offer is starting to cheese off his family, since his dad is a legacy.
I hated my sister growing up, but I didn't hate my dad. I think it's pretty normal to hate your sister when you're a kid, right?
and please don't ask where because I don't recall, that Urban and his staff are evaluating out-of-state kids before in-staters, and getting offers out nationally first. The author suggested that the OSU staff felt they could wait and still get the Ohio kids, so there was no hurry to fully evaluate and offer. I remember thinking it seemed a little odd, and took it with a grain of salt. However, the lack of OSU offers to Ohio kids seems to support that claim. Have you heard anything along the same lines? Again, I apologize for not remembering where I read it, but I am 40 now and struggle remeber what I had for dinner last night, much less where I read this rumor.
I turn 40 tomorrow... does your memory go instantaneously or just fade gradually... or do you not remember how and when it happened :)
If this is true I have to think it's a very bad long term plan. Some recruits will buy this because they're life long Ohio fans, but HS coaches will not be happy about it. Meyer planning for short term success.. Start the retirement countdown clock.
Obviously not, since they've offered 2 other in-state linebackers. It could just be that they like 2 other in-state linebackers more than McCray.
Maybe Urban promised Jaylon Smith that they wouldn't go after any other top-100 LBs.
... No MSU, ND, or OSU offers. So any expert out there know the likely schools in the running other than UM?
Edit: Nevermind, answered above.
I can not recall if he has already taken some unofficial visits, if has not I might be worried.
He hasn't taken any visits.. Interesting..
When i was much younger i had an insanely good looking friend who could get any chick he wanted wherever we went. We called him "Rico Sauve" and even strippers tried to pick him up if we hit one of those establishments. My strategy was to wait until he got whoever he wanted then the leftovers, and there were lots to choose from, were just happy to have somebody paying attention to them and i did (almost) as well as he did. The trick for me at least was knowing my place (second prize) and acting accordingly.
Anyways I was thinking the other day that when it comes to recruiting Hoke is kinda like my old friend Rico and Urban Meyer is playing my role. He's basically letting Hoke get whatever he wants and then will swoop in on the leftovers and give them some pity-love.
Well, that and the fact that Hoke has been recruting and looking at tape for an extra year. Hoke et al know the players and coaches and have been watching them for at least 12 months. Oh, and Meyer runs a different system with coaches he hasn't worked with yet.
Other than that, yeah great example. Way to compare recruiting to all the chicks you've banged. Not creepy at all!
the ending to your story, you fell in love with one of those "leftovers" and are happily married and have beautiful children, While Rico played out his good looks until there inevitable demise and is also ethier alone still trying to live out his glory days, or unhappily married to a chick who he doesn't love and can't stand to look at. Ballpark?
Rico strikes me as the kind of guy that listens to a lot of Pitbull while drinking Dr. Pepper.
Actually no. Rico got married and that ended the party. I did get married (then divorced) and then now remarried to my lovely wife the avatar.
But good guess though.
Governing dynamics!! It's the only way for guys like us to get laid :-)
In biology terms, we call your kind 'satellite males.'
Ohio is simply taking a strategy of offering their 'national' recruits before good state players. I think we are seeing that with McCray and others.
I wonder what chance we have, with him committing the week after he visits us. No idea what this means.
I hope this is true, or at least plays out enough to become an established meme in the Ohio coaching community. This is the exact opposite of what Hoke and staff are doing, and it would piss off the Ohio high school coaches to no end.
that shit [Mc]Cray
McCray hails from Trotwood Madison High School -- the same school as Roy Roundtree, Michael Shaw, & Brandon Moore. Good sign?
If he was in diapers as a middle school, then I don't want him.
...you fire a zinger that costs me a laptop. Thanks.
Mgobluegr talked with Mike less than a week ago. His interest in Michigan is definitely ramping up and the fact he's announcing two days after his visit bodes well for their chances.
Last I had heard is that he was really leaning towards Tennessee. I know he saw the writing on the wall and came away disappointed at Ohio's junior day when they did not offer him because he grew up wanting to play there (his father did play there as well). I can really see him growing into a defensive end, he has a lot of room to grow.
If we take only two linebackers, I'd be very happy with two of Leavenberry, McCray, Gedeon or O'Daniel. Leavenberry is my favorite, not sure who number two is, but any of those three would be great. Anzalone is intriging, but I don't know much about him.
Well, that's a pretty big surprise, I didn't think we'd get him, but that would be a huge pick-up. Dude's a stud, for sure.
With his size, would be a perfect SLB.
I keep thinking "okay, well this class can't get much better than this..there has to be some sort of slow down here." And then, out of the blue comes another "4 star linebacker named Derp is visiting Michigan and Michigan is in his top three."
Quite simply, recruiting makes me giddy.
I don't trust this situation...at all.... it sounds a little fishy. Lets hope its only due to paranoia, but I wouldn't put it past the Ohio "family" to pull something like this, having a silent offer only to leave egg on M's face.
I have a feeling IF he did commit to Michigan and then later on got a offer from OSU he wouldnt beable to switch his commitment any faster
If he decides to commit, I would ask that very question. If Urban comes hard after you in January, will you still be solid Blue?
Yea I would have to believe the Coaches would know this kind of situation with him, IF he committed they would probably talk it over with him to make sure that isnt his inttentions because if it is, I wouldnt be surprised to see them deny his commitment if he only wants to do it to get a offer from OSU.
forcing Ohio's hand and setting his date two days after his visit to U of M? Maybe thinking he can get an offer from Ohio so they just don't lose him to us without trying? All I ever heard he is open to Michigan, but he would follow his fathers footsteps and goto Ohio.
Is it paranoid to think that McCray may possibly commit to Ohio on March 8, and that he and Ohio played it coy, to leave egg on our face? I hope this isn't the case, however, something seems a little off here.
I dont know how we would have egg on our face. i dont think he would be willing to play those kind of games and i am sure his coach would not be happy.
Paranoid and making no sense are not the same thing.
I think we need to work this into the "Hello" post somehow.
I know what I want.
A Michigan themed snuggie?
So is that 4 Rivals 100 LBs who we think are potential commits?
I wonder if Levenberry will beat him to the punch.
Levenberry first, then McCray. Then let the coaches decide if 2 is enough or if they are willing to take 3. That would be a great problem to have.
Do you think EJ is ready for his decision? Would love EJ and Mccray and o'daniel. I think you said this before, EJ and Mccray are SAM's and o'daniel is a WILL. and what is Gideon and the PA LB??
Gedeon looks like he could play either inside or at SAM. Anzalone looks more like an inside linebacker. I await Magnus' more professional take on this.
No, I don't think Levenberry is ready just yet. Yes, Levenberry and McCray are SAMs and O'Daniel is a WILL, perhaps a MIKE if he hits a bit of a growth spurt. Gedeon is probably a MIKE, and the Pennsylvania linebacker (Alex Anzalone, I'm guessing) is a SAM.
When is EJ visiting, the same weekend?
Spring game I believe
What do you know?
Having read Magnus' comments around here and elsewhere for a long time, my answer would be more than you do.
Yeah, he knows more than me. Which is why I asked the question.
The internets are tough because inflection is in the eye of the beholder.
The original post meant "What do you you KNOW?" (i.e What are you not telling us?)
The responder thought he meant "What do YOU know?" (i.e. Who do you think you are?)
Everyone cool? Good.
Missed the inflection.
Does he need to? Couldn't he commit after as long as it is before ODaniel/every other LB in the country, or is there a possiblity we only take one LB?
We'll probably take more than one linebacker, but I would prefer Levenberry over McCray.
Agreed - we can afford to wait. I think McCray goes to the Vols.
After watch their videos, I'd like Levenberry, and then Gedeon or O'Daniel for the other. All three look really good.
that if Michigan pick up both EJ and Mike McCray that they could one inside to play the Mike Linebacker or is it first come first serve for the Sam spot.
With many expecting a UM commit- lots of other LB's will likely be watching this closely.
They all know that the class is getting filled up quickly- so there will be motivation to commit quickly.
So I think it is entirely possible that recruits setting timetables and commiting quickly ca nhelp motivate some players to commit quicker. On the flip-side it may scare some recruits away who want more time and may see any open spots go away
Meyer's strategy is to only offer and take the top kids, then flip kids to round out the class. It worked last year on a few kids, but not with Michigan commits.
Seriously, it's insane how much talent comes out of Ohio every year and I'm very glad Hoke has strong ties there.
I don't know if that will work this year.. it made sense last year, because Urban came on late and many prospects wouldn't consider Ohio with Fickel. (and PSU meltdown was also part of it)
This year it will be much harder, because they will have already considered Ohio.
this kid is a beast. Makes some of the most athletic plays at LB that I have seen froma HS kid.
I dunno, he's a little too far down on the Rivals 100 for my liking.
But seriously, if we could get all 3 of Levenberry, O'Daniel, and McCray I would be totally fine with the coaches taking more than just 2 LB's in this class.
The scary thing is, this class has the potential to make us all forget how awesome 2012 was, and that's saying a lot. This could put Zeke Pike's idea of MEGA CLASS to shame.
I was thinking about that exact thing the other day. Zee Pike talked about commiting and recruiting a superclass to Michigan. But Shane Morris actually did it.
Shane Morris greaterthan Zeke Pike.
Does Ohio offer before then?
McCray is friends with Dukes, Charlton, and Roy Roundtree.
He could see himself joining them at Michigan.
I think he is scheduling a visit up to Michigan just to confirm a few things and commit to the coaches in person. Then, he will make it official a few days later.
Shouldn't there be a little more talk about getting some top-notch DT's to take the heat off all these LB's we're dreaming about? Pipkins can't do it alone. A little depth would make me feel much better about what these LB's can do. Vanderdoes....Poggi.....somebody!!!
It's looking like a crappy year for DT recruiting in the Midwest.
Sam was talking about a DL from Good Counsil this morning that has some Michigan interest. We'll see how it plays out, but at least there is one guy on the board that we know about.
Honestly - we don't have a single DT commit yet and it's almost March. We'll need to pick things up over the next 340 days.
We have offers out to:
Darius Latham (not sure if he is OL or Dl prospect)
This class is beginning to look downright USC or LSU-like. In terms of guru rankings, there's a chance it could end up the best that Michigan has ever had.
Has visited many places already: MSU, OSU, Michigan, Tennessee, etc. Has stated in the past that Tennessee was his favorite visit. Tennessee also got in on him very early. I'd put the odds of him going there much higher than anywhere else right now unless OSU offers.
I think the reason OSU hasn't offered is that he fits the same type as Jaylon Smith, but he's not as athletic or talented. And the coaches seem confident about Smith.
OSU is playing a very dangerous game. They are doing high-risk/high reward recruiting right now. They are in on many bluechip players yes, but they are looking out of state for a good number of them. Is Urban banking on being able to pick off commits later on? perhaps, but he couldnt do it last year with kalis and hasnt been able to do it with Dymonte. It really seems like Urban is over-estimating his own recruiting prowess and greatly under-estimating Hokes. He might spend all his time out of State and in the south only to come back a realize a lot of the Ohio talent is off the table for him. He is the opposite of Tressel recruiting wise. Tressel choked off Michigan's talent in Ohio, Urban seems to be less inclined to do so.
Urban didn't really pick off that many guys last year. Of the already committed guys he flipped, most were from Penn State which had plenty of their own problems, and one was Pittman who had always maintained that he'd flip if OSU ever offered. He flipped on guy from Wisconsin, but he probably would have never been a Wisconsin commit had Urban been there from the start.
Point is, it's not that easy to just flip a guy from his commitment. When kids commit to schools, they buy gear from that school, their families do as well, they visit a few times to acclimate themselves with the campus and the community, they need with academic people, and they foster relationships with players, coaches and fellow commits.
I highly doubt that's Urban's plan, but if it is, that's great news for us.
I almost feel sorry for those nuts down in ohio.
They finally have their rock star coach that is coming in to save their program from embarassment. He is recruiting nationally maybe holding out on in state kids for better faster national recruits. Maybe they are a little smaller but they fit his spread system better than the home state kids. Ignores the home state high school coach by playing it slow. While a huge rival get sto come and take the top talent from under your nose because you get the home state guys to fill the holes that we didn't get nationally.
Sorry I think I am getting me cozches confused, is that RichRod or Urban. Hmmm oh well I'm sure he'll do fine with that.
I smell number 14 on 3/8! Hopefully before then.

Apparently, he's now visiting the vols before his commitment. Per espn http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/ncfrecruiting/on-the-trail/post?id=10024.... Not good. O well, at least were in on 3 over blue chip LB's.
Not saying he won't commit here. BUt this obviously changes things a little.
