#4 Field Hockey wins outright B1G Championship

To be the man, ya gotta beat the man.

#4 Michigan already has wins over the following teams on their resume: #1 North Carolina, #15 Wake Forest, #25 Liberty, #3 Penn State, #15 Maryland, #20 Rutgers, #12 Stanford and #22 Iowa.

The Wolverines ended Maryland's field hockey monopoly of the B1G last Sunday when they clinched at least of share of the B1G Championship. Today, Michigan looked to slam the door on all challengers who were still in the hunt for the title.

Namely Northwestern who at 5-1 still had a shot at stealing a piece of the title if they won today at Ocker Field.

Despite Michigan outshooting Northwestern 8-3 in the 1st half, the score remained 0-0. No grade A chances for either team.

In the 2nd half, Northwestern adjusted and at one point Michigan went over 15 minutes in between shots. Shots were much closer in the 2nd half at 6-4. Michigan dominated Northwestern in penalty corner chances, 9-2 with Northwestern's second coming extremely late.

It was on a penalty corner that the Wolverines scored the game-winner. Senior defenseman Katie Trombetta scored her 3rd goal of the season on senior day on a ball that was high but counted a goal because it deflected off the Northwestern defense.

Michigan took a 1-0 lead with just 9:11 left in the game, and the stout Wolverines defense shut Northwestern down. The Wildcats had one last shot with time expired as they were awarded a penalty corner that was turned away. Game. 

There's no "co" in these champions. Michigan slams the door and it the outright B1G Champion, with a final B1G record of 8-0. The first ever 8-0 B1G season in program history.

This is the 9th B1G Championship in Michigan Field Hockey history. It comes 20 years after the first one in 1997, and it the first B1G Championship for this program since 2011.

It is also the first B1G Championship for any Michigan Fall bracket sport since that aforementioned 2011 Field Hockey team. 

Michigan is now 14-2. The B1G season has wrapped up with an 8-0 record. But the tests aren't done and the season CERTAINLY is far from over. 

#4 Michigan travels to #7 Louisville for a non-conference game on Sunday.
