#3 Michigan Hockey vs. #4 Ferris State open thread

Kind of a biggish game. Two top five teams, set us up for the GLI, posbangs are back and it would be damn nice to have something to be happy about around here. Game is on Fox Sports Detroit Plus. Let's go boys. Go blue, beat the Bulldogs and keep rolling.

Just counts as a 2–2 tie, so the shootout was for pride and practice mostly, but still better to get a basically-W even if it's scored as a T?

I guess this is the time I'm allowed to say "moral victory" because we didn't lose?

Does winning in the shootout mean anything for NCAA purposes or will they count it as a tie? I seem to remember something weird like that for college hockey.

Counts as a tie now that we're not in the same conference. If it were last year it'd mean something.

That's not to say tying and technically-beating-but-not-getting-officially-scored-as-having-beaten the #4 team doesn't mean something. It's definitely a good thing! Just unfortunately not a win for points purposes.

I think the GLI is going to be huge for Boo Nieves. He's a playmaker, not a goal scorer. Skating on the 3rd line this year with Hyman before, and now Moffatt and Kile is not a group of wings who can score goals.

Compher and Copp willbe at World Juniors, so Nieves will be the first line center skating with Alex Guptill. It's a perfect opportunity to break out of his scoring slump.

I controlled myself after shouting when Copp scored the first shootout goal. No reason to be giddy. Game ends in a tie. The only thing the shootout does is bumps Michigan's all-time record in shootouts up.

Should have won this one in regulation. If there weren't all those shots allowed that eventually resulted in a FSU goal in the 1st, Michigan would've won this game.

Frustrating, but at least it wasn't a loss. Onto the great, frozen outdoors to bring home the MacInnes trophy!

Also-

  • Yay, I Bleed is back in the hockey threads after a short break!
  • Zac Brown Band will be at the Joe Louis Arena featuring Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue.

Kevin Clare is slow. The second and third period Michigan was moving out of the zone  without too much pressure from Ferris State. One play; Kevin Clare is caught on the back boards with the puck, coughs it up and it's a tie game.

We can't play 58 minutes of hockey and expect to win.

We were lucky to come out with a tie.  Ferris had a real strong attack on the net and our defense was having trouble clearing it out.  Countless turnovers became a couple of goals and a number of near misses.  Naglevoort kept us in it.  There was a period where we looked strong but not the whole game.  Third period it did look like we were trying to protect a one goal lead and it seemed to be working until we coughed up the tying goal.  Very few penalties.  Ferris went way up on us in shots but we had caught up by the end of the game.

The NCAA doesn't recognize shootouts so it goes in the books as a tie.  The Big Ten uses the shoot out to determine conference placement (just like the CCHA has in the past) so it impacts conference placement and seeding in the B1G playoff.  It has no impact in the RPI or Pairwise so it does not impact at large bids to the NCAA tournament so the shootout last night was more of an exhibition and I think both teams have to agree to do it or they don't.

for explaining that.  Last night was the first M hockey game I've ever been to and I had no idea what the rules are concerning overtime & shoot-outs.  I asked the guy next to me wearing a M hockey jersey and he didn't have a clue.  Should've just checked the game thread.
