#3 Michigan Hockey vs. #4 Ferris State open thread
let's get after 'em
It'll be interesting to see if they're all hype or not. Will also be interesting to see how former CCHA teams do without B1G members filling their arenas. M by 3.
ive seen this season! I believe i saw that it is on Fox Sports Atlantic for those outside of the FSD+ footprint. Go Blue!
Me too. Headed there soon. Go Blue
great belated birthday present to Coach! Go Blue!
Right at the beginning of finals week! Really?!?! Wont be surprised if student section is not full
50,000 students. I'm sure there will be those who are done with finals, those who priortizie hockey over a final, and those who use this as a stress relief. It does help that this is a top 5 matchup.
but I remember some of the crazy games I went to in school
any live streams gonna be up tonight?
Those have always worked for. Just follow the instructions on page 1 about doing the streamtorrent stuff.
cheer hard for me. Go blue
Should be a good game. Actually, if you follow Michigan hockey, this is your last chance to get a fix until after Christmas, if I am not mistaken, so turn out - either in person or in spirit - and support the Wolverines.
Incidentally, Massy predicts a tossup basically - 51% esitmated win probability for Ferris State with a predicted tie actually. Interesting indeed.
The GLI is December 26th and 27th. After the GLI we're off until a two game series in Madison January 10th and 11th, then off again until January 23rd.
WCBN, the student radio station, is broadcasting here. We are biased as hell and the best broadcast you'll get tonight.
In Goal- Junior CJ Motte (brother of Tyler) 2.31 GAA and .925 save percentage. Is playing better lately after a slow start.
Scoring- Sophomore Matt Robertson has goals in 7 straight games. Senior Garrett Thompson leads the team with 20 pts. (9G, 11A). Although Ferris seems to have pretty balanced scoring with 9 players in double digit points through 17 games.
Defense- Senior Scott Czarnowczan (Captain) is an offensive puck moving defenseman who can score (4G, 10A). Junior Jason Binkley is a more physical defenseman who has 15 pts to go along with 31 PIMS.
Recently Ferris has been giving up a lot of shots, but not so much "quality scoring chances" it will be important Michigan gets into scoring areas and creates traffic to disrupt Motte.
EDIT: CJ Motte is Junior (corrected)
Get the job done boys! I sense a shutout...
Former Wings goalie Manny Legace doing color with Matt Shepard for Fox
Let's Go Blue! Beat FSU!
Ferris' jerseys are just so plain and blah. Should really use the Bulldog head instead of the script "Ferris State"
Just block letters now.
1) Tyler Motte just sprayed his brother (the Ferris goalie)
2) stands look pretty empty on TV but we can hear the students.
ARGH, turnover! Phew, post!
Uh-oh, Copp slow to get up. Hope he's OK.
Dammit, they score. 1-0 them.
Serville misplayed and Ferris walked in for an easy goal 0-1 Ferris leads
1-1 Copp with a goal
1-1. Copp tried to center it from behind the net and it bounced off a Ferris defenders skate and in.
Copp. 1-1 now.
Michigan scores 1-1.
Copp off an FSU player!
1-1! Copp!!!! 9th goal of season for Copp
ZBB = Drink!
You just suck! You just suck!
Ref: "You gotta move it, you're not getting a whistle, buddy!"
Is anyone else seeing some FSD transmission breakups?
Way too many turnovers for Michigan in the neutral and the D-Zone. They need to tighten up, because this game could easily be 4-1.
Ferris is getting a ton of shots. nagelvoort is keeping us in the game. Need more offensive chances or we'll be in trouble.
...with the large section of good seats being unoccupied?
It's a Wednesday night game during finals week. Who decided to schedule this I have no idea.
DIE ZBB, DIE!!!!!!
Is there anyone who knows how many Grammy awards they have won?
For the Zac Brown Band.
They have an album. It won a Grammy.
EDIT: You guys beat me to it.
Guptill. 2-1 good guys
Nice way to start the 2nd
The best wrist shot in college hockey. 2-1 Michigan.
ZBB, a second show added New Year's Day!
I have no idea who the Zach brown band is but my god are they seriously invested in advertising during college hockey! Jeez!
We want MOAR goals!
Alex Guptill makes it 2-1!
I wish more of their games were on BTN because I cannot see them in Cleveland otherwise.
If we did a drinking game based around throwing one down every time a Zac Brown Band commercial came on, we'd be filling emergency rooms by now.
How many people are going to go see the Zac Brown Band over going to the Winter Classic?
Maybe if they run just ONE MORE AD I might consider it.
FSU for hooking. A PPG would be nice.
Nieves draws the hooking call.
D'oh, now we go to the box.
Hooking on us.
Hyman to the box.
Yay, PK does its job!
I would like to see us do a bettter job of getting out of our zone.
Anyone know who's opening for the three-time Grammy-winning Zac Brown Band?
Is the answer Trombone Shorty!?!?!
Quick M hockey question for those of you in the know. Other than Red and Brian Wiseman on our staff, are there any former M players coaching anywhere? I know a few in front offices including David Oliver and Jason Botterill but I'm curious about former players behind the bench.
John Madden is an assistant with the Florida Panthers I think
John Madden is an assistant in Florida. At Michigan Tech Bill Muckalt is an assistant, Steve Shields was also at MTU but he left.
Another PP for us!
Sigh, again no joy.
Whoa. A double ZBB. Chug!
Both teams are lucky the goalies are on their game tonight. Motte and Nagelvoort have bailed out their teams.
Dang, that tipped puck was just a bit outside!
Couple of good scoring chances. Need to finish.
Also need to stop turning the puck over in our own zone.

Game is on BTN2GO as well!
Score and time, anyone?
2-1 U-M, 9:04 left in third.
About 1/2 way through the 3rd.
Still 2-1 Michigan with about nine minutes to go in the third period.
Crap, they score. 2-2. :P
2-2 with 5:38 to go in the third.
Well shit. I literally just turned on BTN2GO to watch the litlte bit of the game I could and they scored within 10 seconds of me turning it on.
It's all your fault, it's all your fault.
1st UM shot in the 3rd finally comes at the 5 minute mark.
A Zac Brown Band concert looks like it could be fun. I wonder where and when it is??
I heard there's a second show on New Year's Day...
Headed to overtime.
Going to overtime tied 2-2.
2-2, going to OT.
Still 2-2, shootout.
Mr. and Mrs. Motte looked so confused until that student pointed the camera out.
"Why is everyone calling and texting us???"
Motte on Motte: saved.
Beautiful 5-holer on the backhand by Copp
D'oh, they score.
Off the post!
Nieves, no joy.
Moffatt got him down, but he still saves.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOLAZO AH SO AH SO AH SO
What a move!
Alex Kile scores the game winner in sudden death shootout.
Alex Kile. We need one more big save from Nagelvoort.
The Kile goal wasn't even close. It didn't cross by much but it was definitely a goal and it was clearly visible from where I was standing in the stands. I was surprised they spent so much time reviewing it.
Damn right, it's a goal!
SUCK IT, ZAC BROWN!
Don't forget Trombone Shorty and Orleans St.
They can all suck it!
Justin DeMartino shooting for Ferris, stopped by Nagelvoort. Michigan wins.
What a beauty by Kile. Very entertaining game.
Over the #4 team!!
Couldn't hit refresh fast enough... Go Blue!
Two evenly matched Top-5 teams end in a tie.
"Sports is awesome! It really is!" - Matt Shepard
Just counts as a 2–2 tie, so the shootout was for pride and practice mostly, but still better to get a basically-W even if it's scored as a T?
I guess this is the time I'm allowed to say "moral victory" because we didn't lose?
Does winning in the shootout mean anything for NCAA purposes or will they count it as a tie? I seem to remember something weird like that for college hockey.
Counts as a tie now that we're not in the same conference. If it were last year it'd mean something.
That's not to say tying and technically-beating-but-not-getting-officially-scored-as-having-beaten the #4 team doesn't mean something. It's definitely a good thing! Just unfortunately not a win for points purposes.
Between two Big Ten teams a shootout counts. Non-conference you play the shootout, but the game ends in a tie.
What a hockey game.. GO BLUE!!! Hope maybe replay from this one will go on mgovideo. Classic game. Thanks BTN2Go!
I think the GLI is going to be huge for Boo Nieves. He's a playmaker, not a goal scorer. Skating on the 3rd line this year with Hyman before, and now Moffatt and Kile is not a group of wings who can score goals.
Compher and Copp willbe at World Juniors, so Nieves will be the first line center skating with Alex Guptill. It's a perfect opportunity to break out of his scoring slump.
I controlled myself after shouting when Copp scored the first shootout goal. No reason to be giddy. Game ends in a tie. The only thing the shootout does is bumps Michigan's all-time record in shootouts up.
Should have won this one in regulation. If there weren't all those shots allowed that eventually resulted in a FSU goal in the 1st, Michigan would've won this game.
Frustrating, but at least it wasn't a loss. Onto the great, frozen outdoors to bring home the MacInnes trophy!
- Yay, I Bleed is back in the hockey threads after a short break!
- Zac Brown Band will be at the Joe Louis Arena featuring Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue.
Yeah, I watched the previous few on tape delay. Was good to be current & participating.
Kevin Clare is slow. The second and third period Michigan was moving out of the zone without too much pressure from Ferris State. One play; Kevin Clare is caught on the back boards with the puck, coughs it up and it's a tie game.
We can't play 58 minutes of hockey and expect to win.
We were lucky to come out with a tie. Ferris had a real strong attack on the net and our defense was having trouble clearing it out. Countless turnovers became a couple of goals and a number of near misses. Naglevoort kept us in it. There was a period where we looked strong but not the whole game. Third period it did look like we were trying to protect a one goal lead and it seemed to be working until we coughed up the tying goal. Very few penalties. Ferris went way up on us in shots but we had caught up by the end of the game.
The NCAA doesn't recognize shootouts so it goes in the books as a tie. The Big Ten uses the shoot out to determine conference placement (just like the CCHA has in the past) so it impacts conference placement and seeding in the B1G playoff. It has no impact in the RPI or Pairwise so it does not impact at large bids to the NCAA tournament so the shootout last night was more of an exhibition and I think both teams have to agree to do it or they don't.
for explaining that. Last night was the first M hockey game I've ever been to and I had no idea what the rules are concerning overtime & shoot-outs. I asked the guy next to me wearing a M hockey jersey and he didn't have a clue. Should've just checked the game thread.
