3 Losses before October thing

Submitted by BlueinLansing on

This little nugget of info was passed around freely this weekend undoubtedly to cause more pain and embarrasment for the football program.

Here is the truth.  Prior to the war years football's first game was almost always the first week of October.  Michigan's first year playing 3 games in September was 1944.  They did it again the following year in 1945.  The next time they played 3 games in September and regularly since was 1971.

This is pretty much faux outrage over something that wasn't even possible to accomplish for over half of the football progams existance.

I'd take an average professional Korean StarCraft II player with no American football knowledge coaching the OL over Funk any day. I'm confident in my hypothetical pro gamer's ability to break down game film and imitate what the competition is doing in order to refine his OL strategies.

Would probably hire StartCraft players.  Pre Brood War because who needs modern stuff like medics and things that might reduce the effectiveness of rushing attacks.

Or, since the kids these days are talking about that Warcraft World thing, maybe they'll find someone who is a master of that.   Like this guy.

Clearly has angry skills and will pown Ohio.

This was something I wanted to tweet annoyed about but I was too busy being angry with the dipshits in charge of the program.

But while I'm here, a random stat from the SuperGuide.

Michigan is 65-34 all-time in games not played on a Saturday. This includes 15-14 record on Thursdays.

Michigan opens the 2015 season on a Thursday night with the new head coach. It will be exactly 110 years since their last game on a Thursday in the regular season.

So 1971 is...43 years?  We didn't lose 3 games before October in 43 years.

Rich Rodriguez in 2008 and 2009 didn't enter October with 3 losses.  Now, is this team as bad or worst than the 2008 team?  Probably not, but we will see the rest of the way.  How they've looked against big conference teams doesn't give me much hope for wins 3 and 4.

And the media made a big deal of it, it's good to know that you'd be here to point out that it's not so bad because we haven't been playing 12 games a year very long.

present it.

Saying Michigan hasn't lost 3 games in September in 135 year history is accurate but extremely misleading.

Its just like saying dumb things like this was so and so teams first win at USC since 1952, when in fact they've played like 2 games there.  Its dumb and misleading.

I have been on mgoblog most of the day, and now morning.  I can't stop checking.  After the 11-2 season I thought everything was going back to normal - shots at B1G titles, beating rivals, bowl games.  Somehow it's all come crashing down.  RR had epic bad defenses and now we've got the opposite - epic bad offense, and we're going through another coaching change, most likely, at the end of the season.  I can't stand it.  I have stuff to do and I am glued to this site because I cannot express my disbelief at how badly this team is doing enough.

Start of the year I was thinking 8-5, maybe better.  Now it's more like 2-10.  You can't win if you can't score, and you can't win if your offense gifts the other team with great field position or  pick-sixes.  At this point it may be best for my mental health to just focus on other things.

in 43 years is better than 135 years.

The stat I find more remarkable is that the 30 points Minnesota scored was the largest point total the Gophers have put up in Ann Arbor since 1937, when they scored 39.

It's also only second time the Gophers have scored 30 or more on Michigan since 1937 either in Minneapolis or in Ann Arbor.

What a relief!

While your at it, why don't you tell us the number of times, prior to 1944, the program lost 3 times in October.

I'm not expecting there to be many, if any, otherwise I'm sure you would have told us.

I thought the same thing as soon as I saw this stat. It's not like Michigan has never been 2-3 before, although it hasn't been frequent. It's just there haven't always been opportunities to be 2-3 this soon. There's plenty to be upset about right now, no need to go digging for meaningless items.
