3 coaches, 3 years, can you guess who they are?

Submitted by Brandon_L on

Below I listed the road records of three coaches in their first three years at a major BCS school. Can you guess who they are and what team’s they represent, or represented? If so you will not win a prize, but you may gain some obvious insight. My argument for Michigan has been about the lack of o-line recruiting under the previous regime (the obvious). Michigan had a one year gap where the upperclassmen on the interior line graduated and left us  with redshirt freshman and sophomores competing for jobs who have little to no game experience. Two out of the three coaches listed had upper class experience on the interior of their lines from one year to the next (experience, maturity, not being thrown into the fire to learn). While one coach (can you guess him)? has a huge drop off and has been forced to (throw players into the fire) .

(COACH 1)

O-LINE FIRST THREE YEARS

  1. LT (JR) LG (SR) C (SR) RG (JR) RT (JR) ROAD RECORD: 2-2

  1. LT (SR) LG (SR) C (SR) RG (SR) RT (JR) ROAD RECORD: 1-6

  1. LT (SR) LG (JR) C (JR) LG (R-FR) LT (SR) ROAD RECORD: 2-3

3 YEAR OVERALL ROAD RECORD: 5-11

(COACH 2)

O-LINE FIRST 3 YEARS

  1. JR. SR. JR. SR. JR. ROAD RECORD: 1-4

  1. SO. SO. JR. JR. SO. ROAD RECORD: 3-2

3 YEAR OVERALL ROAD RECORD: 6-9

(COACH 3)

O-LINE FIRST THREE YEARS.

  1. SO. JR. SR. JR. SR. ROAD RECORD: 3-2

  1. JR. SR. SR. SR. JR.  ROAD RECORD: 2-3

  1. R-SR. FR. SO. R-FR. SR. ROAD RECORD: 1-2

3 YEAR OVERALL ROAD RECORD: 6-7

Michigan didn’t try to implement Manball in any high variety until last year. The staff came in and decided to adapt in an effort to not only win, but please the fan base and to limit attrition. We needed to keep Denard if we were going to keep the roster from fully running in a different direction. This staff unlike the previous staff adapted. Now we are seeing growing pains of a very youthful inexperienced line, mixed in with a lot more manball, west coast offense. This has been the cause of a lot of issues (Per Borges). The staff waited until year three to implement their system fully and we are finally feeling the effects of the change. 2011 was destined to be a good year because it was Rich Rods most experienced team. The X factor for me has and will always be the depth of our offensive line. If this staff is going to succeed the way they vow to succeed then the offensive line must gain experience and go through the motions.

Let the discussion begin. I will have more to add to this later this week. I have far more to add to this. I will try to make this a diary by end of week.

The first is Les Miles at Oklahoma State. You did make a mistake, their first year road record was 2-3, not 1-3. But regardless, I think you're making a mistake if you're trying to compare 2013 Michigan to 2001-2003 OSU. We should be significantly better than that group of OSU teams were, not trying to rationalize why their progress is similar to ours.

In terms of of what they had on the offensive line they were in similar shape. My argument is the year three. I will highlight it later. We drop off significantly. Also Oklahoma State had Josh Fields and Tatem Bell. Bell rushed for nearly 1300 yds. Our talent level has obviously improved, but its not foolish to compare what we had year one of Hoke to 2003 oklahoma state.

Lastly, I wanted to compare the last 3 candidates for the Michigan job.

Why do I get the feeling that the three teams you listed weren't at the top of the conference in terms of recruiting when the new coach took over? Also, the Big 12 in 2001 had 4 teams in the top 15. The Big Ten currently has one, and we've not played them yet.

For any given sample space there will always be exceptions.  I could pick 3 stocks that defied the normal trends and justify the future trend for a fourth and lose my shirt.  If you are going to attempt to make a conclusion, you have to present the entire sample space not just the ones that work for your conclusion.

What you will find out is that good coaches eventually overcome a talent deficit and win and bad coaches just look worse.  Furthermore there are some bad coaches who are so bad that despite good talent they are still crummy when the developed players graduate.   Can you look at Notre Dame in 2007 and predict that Weis is going to fail?   Using your conclusions he should be given more time because 3 coaches in similiar situations succeeded.

is that the age of the OL doesn't really matter.  Coach 1's oldest line had the worst record; Coach 2's youngest line had the best record; Coach 3's oldest line was in the middle but a losing record.  so i guess, the OL experience meme is BS.

Instead of talking about Hoke and Les Miles, why not a coach with more similar record? Les only losing season was his first year as a head coach. Let that sink in. He has only been a winner since his second year and this is in the Big 12 when they won championships and then the SEC.

Instead Hoke is a guy that once got lucky he had 4 losing seasons and then a .500 season followed. He then caught lightening in a bottle and had the best season and after losing the conference championship he jumped to San Diego. He had a losing season and then won 2/3 of his game. He then came to Michigan where he should win 6 games just by showing up (three cupcakes and the conference dregs). At Michigan he had been falling back to being an 8 game type of coach.

This best fits Coach Gene Chizik. He had losing records before going to Auburn. There he was an 8 win coach except for his magic season of 14 wins and the crater that got him fired when he only won the cupcakes.

There is nothing in Hoke's career that points to him having success in the B1G.
