3-3-5 DC's

I am currently split between the fire Gerg camp and the youth is to blame camp. The thing I've been pondering is if Gerg was to be fired after the season, are their any other DC's out there who have experience running the 3-3-5. It seems to be with the personel we have recruited the past few seasons we are to thin on the DL and have to many hybird safteys to run another system. So my question is if Gerg gets canned, who would be the primary canidates to be the new DC?

While this may not have been phrased in the best possible way it could still be an interesting disccussion. My go at it may have been something like:

What 3-3-5 D-Coordinators are there in the FBS and what are the numbers for their respective defenses in the past few years? Has anyone noticed certain position strengths that correlate with good defenses?

This way the discussion can be informative to us as Michigan fans as well as leaving out any undesired negative connotations. On the other hand I may have just totally misinterpreted your statement in that you meant that if you are going to post, you should have already done this research.

I'm not a defensive guru or anything, and I don't have a laundry list of coaches/teams that run a 3-3-5.  What I will add though, is that I believe RR and GERG when they say the "3-3-5" concern is really overblown.  Every team, regardless of their "defense type" has various packages where they rush 3 or 4 guys, various blitz packages etc.  All this changes depending on what the offense is showing, how many yards before a 1st down, field position etc.

It's not really the "defense type" that necessarily matters, it's the play calling and execution on each play.  I think what RR has been saying all along is that there's not all that much Michigan can do (e.g. run more complex schemes) because they don't have the personnel/experience combination just yet.

That being said isn't WV still running a 3-3-5, and haven't they been pretty successful with it?

If it was titled "3-3-5 DC Replacements" it would have been descriptive enough to keep the folks who are sick of the firing topic away while giving the others who want to discuss it some more the forum to do it .

This is seriously not a big issue.  In this age of spread offenses, tons of teams are using five DBs.  The main question is whether to use a 3-3-5 and 4-2-5.  Like most teams, we alternate between the two.

mind that RR likes the 3-5-3, if they use four man fronts against power teams! I just wished they blitzed alot more. the 3-5-3 can be lethal if you blitz periodically. The offense would never know where the rush is coming from. Obviously Gerg is cautious because of all the youth on defense. Hopefully we start seeing some pressure put on opposing qb's.

The 3-3-5 Odd Stack can be an effective defense by using speed and aggressiveness to combat superior size, athleticism, and depth. Once the proper players are positioned on the roster, the Defensive Coordinator is responsible for providing the creativity for the defense to keep opposing offenses confused and guessing.

Edit: I argue that we are still lacking the proper players so it is hard to critique GR's creativity at this juncture.

Did you not see what happened to Floyd when we blitzed late in the Iowa game?  That will come in time when we have CBs that have more game played than fingers.  I find is interesting that during the Iowa game the annoucers were reporting how RR admired Iowa's consistency with the coaching staff and the lack of turnover.  To me that was speaking specifically about GREG.

I have friends that are Sparty friends and up until this year, they would tell you they wanted nothing more than to run their DC out of town (Narduzzi?).  Hmmm wonder what they think of him now that Sparty's D has depth and a stud player (Jones).

Yes, players are the ones that make coaches look smart....

Always remember...you play well and you play hard because you are Michigan....

A little off subject, and I know this has been brought up in the past..........but woud Mike Trgovac have any interest.  He had some very good defense years in Carolina.  It would restore some of the Michigan men pipeline as well.
