2nd VaTech kicker ineligible for Sugar Bowl
According to VaTech Football twitter, 2nd string kicker Tyler Weiss missed curfew and was sent home. Looks like it's down to just Justin Myer. Myer is a senior who is 0-2 this year, his only two attempts of his career. Va Tech 's first string kicker is already Cody Journal is facing felony charges and not playing in the game.

Well, 2 point conversions all around!

They have to get the ball in the endzone first.
December 29th, 2011 at 3:15 PM ^
To hell with that noise.
December 29th, 2011 at 2:18 PM ^
Justin Myer is the guy who was going to handle longer field goals in the game. Apparently he's unreliable enough that they wanted Weiss to kick all of the extra points and short FGs. Another good turn of events for the good guys.

It would be really great to see a Michigan blowout in the Sugar Bowl. If a team gets frustrated over blowing a couple of drives with the kicking game, things can get out of hand toward the end.
A lopsided Michigan win could make a difference with those last few recruiting slots.

Jeff Reed is such a bad influence on these kickers:

I have used a middle linebacker to punt on NCAA Football for the iPad. I am not sure why I came to that decision, but I offer the suggestion to Virginia Tech all the same.
December 29th, 2011 at 2:51 PM ^
Suggestion. Partly because it also means that they're scouting Michigan by reading MGoBlog.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:16 PM ^
Well, would he?
December 29th, 2011 at 2:28 PM ^
I'm wondering if the whole unsupervised NOLA trip is going to have more casualties for either team before we reach January 3rd. My guess is we see a lot of missed curfews.
December 29th, 2011 at 2:30 PM ^
Have to respect their coaches integrity. Hope all our guys behave, I have a distinct feeling Hoke would do the same thing. (which is exactly what I want, don't get me wrong)

Strong is the power of the Virginia Tech Kicker Hating God.

Would we really send Denard home if he missed curfew? That would be incredibly ridculous!
December 29th, 2011 at 4:30 PM ^
Would never miss curfew.
Also, to get sent home, this kicker probably did not "miss curfew" so much as he "was awoken from his drunken nap over a bar table at 4 AM by a tap from an assistant coach sent to find him when he never came in."
December 29th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
Exactly. And little known fact it is a NCAA violation for a player, even over 21 to consume alcohol on a team trip.
<br>
<br>I found that out from personal experience.
December 29th, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
Denard is so fast that curfew misses him, not the other way around.
December 29th, 2011 at 2:46 PM ^
Would we really send D-Rob home if he missed curfew? That would just be utterly ridiculous!
December 29th, 2011 at 3:08 PM ^
Probably more than just being a few minutes late to get you sent home.
December 29th, 2011 at 2:40 PM ^
So the question of the hour is which kicking will be better;
Michigan 2010 or Virginia Tech Sugar Bowl 2012?
Juggernauts.
December 29th, 2011 at 2:48 PM ^
Agreed, I am so happy that I know 100% that another team will have to pray more on field goals and extra points than we will...knock on wood!
December 29th, 2011 at 10:06 PM ^
I also remember how that forced us into some smart aggressive decision making, i.e. not being scared to go for it on 4th and short in the opponents end of the field, etc
December 29th, 2011 at 2:42 PM ^
the game is more than just the 60 minutes on the field. Preparation is as important, if not more.
December 29th, 2011 at 2:47 PM ^
We might have the advantage when it comes to kicking field goals for once.
December 29th, 2011 at 3:06 PM ^
and let that statement sink in.
December 29th, 2011 at 2:56 PM ^
Which one of these kickers usually handles kickoffs?
December 29th, 2011 at 3:18 PM ^
Nice thought but the last kicker standing is the kickoff guy.
December 29th, 2011 at 3:01 PM ^
niiiiiiiice
December 29th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
In all seriousness...we better plan for a LOT of fakes and 2pt conversions. I hope we're practice how to defense these a little more than usual.
I expect them to go for it on 4th down, I expect some onside kicks, I expect some faked FGs and XPs...down 2 kickers?! Wow.
December 29th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
but at the same time, Beamer and crew probably don't want to get the kicker himself involved in any of the aforementioned fakes. After all, if HE gets injured in the game, then they're just beyond screwed.
Not that I wish injury upon anybody, but it would be hilarious if they didn't have someone to do kickoffs and ended up squib kicking it all game.

26 hour bus ride home on the Greyhound is not going to be fun for him.

December 29th, 2011 at 3:35 PM ^
With many NCAA coaches, Justin Myer could now show up late and naked for the next team meeting and still play in the game. Beamer, however, seems to run a tight ship and would just go for it on every 4th down and extra point.
December 29th, 2011 at 4:04 PM ^
is now stuck in his room while his teammates have fun.
December 29th, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
Plus there's a chance that the iron leg shackles will affect his kicking.
December 29th, 2011 at 4:50 PM ^
we'll lose by a last-second field goal, but given our luck in bowl games it's still not out of the question.
1972 Rose Bowl Stanford Rod Garcia kicks game-winner with 16 seconds left 12-13
1984 Sugar Bowl Auburn Al Del Greco kicks game-winner with 27 seconds left 7-9
2005 Rose Bowl Texas Dusty Mangum kicks game-winner with 0 seconds left 37-38
In addition:
1995 Alamo Bowl Tx A&M Kyle Bryant kicks game-winner with 23 seconds left 20-22 (we actually scored a TD in the final few seconds for the final score; Bryant's FG made it 22-13).
We've never beaten a bowl opponent with a field goal in the final seconds.
