Per 247 Writer, 2015 #4 Pro Style QB Brady White "Michigan Now Showing Interest"

Submitted by alum96 on

With the #1 2015 pro style QB (Ricky Town) headed to Alabama, and the #2 (Josh Rosen) at best lukewarm on Michigan, tonight's comment from 24/7 national writer (who focuses on the Pac 12) is that #4 pro style QB (per 24/7) Brady White of CA has told him Michigan is now showing interest.  Unlike all other positions, the Hoke era QB offers come in extremely targeted fashion so we'll see if there is mutual interest and if it leads to an offer down the road. Fun fact: Ex-Cal QB and former NFL QB Kyle Boller attended same HS. As did the well traveled Matt Moore. (thanks wikipedia)

White is a 6'2", 180 lb prospect who plays at William S Hart HS in Newhall, CA.  The state is absolutely stacked in pro style QBs at the top of the 2015 class per 24/7 - #1 thru #5.

You'll see a lot of guys with Bama "offers" and things, because they "offer" people to come throw for them or come to camp. But real, commitable offers for QBs don't get thrown out as much or as early as other positions. You typically are only going to take one, you want to get as much of a feel for where to go and what to do before throwing that offer out there. I mean, look even now at the '14 QB class and look at the offers they have, and it's typically limited to 1-3 B1G teams for a guy. Teams just typically target QB differently than other positions.

one comment, suggests that he's not only an excellent passer but has great speed as well. Is this a change for Borges in his methodology since having worked with Denard, and Gardner? Or has he always saught out Mobile Qb's?

Well Speight isn't known for his scrambling ability or speed. Personally, if this kid is a combination of accurate/good wheels I prefer this type of quarterback. Gorgeous coached McNown at UCLA back in the day who knows, perhaps he is trying to rekindle old flames. I'm sure coaching Devin doesn't hurt either.

Whaile that might be true, you're aware that Denard was not, in fact, very good at the type of running with the football that you want in a true dual-threat quarterback, aren't you?

Denard was The Man, but he wasn't really dual-threat.  He was just phenomenally good at the called run (or the broken play).

Me too.  I am hoping the Devin Gardner era has Hoke and Borges re-consider the "classic drop back QB" to be more broad to the mobile passing QB.  Even Morris has some athleticism to him. I think the older prototype is Donovan McNabb.  I still have nightmares from that Syracuse UM game; before we scored some points in garbage time to make it look closer than it was, Syracuse came into our house and went up 38-7.  Nothing breaks the spirit of the fans and the defenders when you have said QB in your grasp over and over all game in his backfield and he scrambles away from you to throw daggers down the field or runs it himself. Cade M is actually a good example as well.  They are not run first QBs or even run often like Oregon QBs or our buddy Johnny down at Texas A&M, but just enough scrambling and elusivity you have to account for - something Gardner might be doing this year if he blossoms.  I have no idea if this White kid is that type of player but I would say yes please if that is a newer philosophy - let's give the defenses more to think about than just needing to collapse a pocket.  Since Rosen was their first target I don't think this is necessarily the idea but I personally love mobility in a QB if we can find it.

Grbac had two interceptions returned for touchdowns and two interceptions in the red zone. Two more drives ended in failed fourth down conversions in the red zone. So while they were definitely outplayed, the game was much closer than the final score would indicate.

The Rose Bowl that year, though, was pretty much a rout (34-14 loss to Washington). The first touchdown was something of a gift, too.

When will people stop saying they hope Borges changes his preference for drop back QBs. We've been through this several times. Borges's only preference is for guys who are great passers. That's the prerequisite for the position. After that comes intangibles and then mobility is a tiebreaker. He obviously doesn't actively seek guys who run 6 second 40s.

People act like Borges wants someone back there that couldn't move if he was on roller skates. In reality, Borges would love to have someone back there that could run and pick up yards with his legs. He simply doesn't require it and it isn't nearly as important as the player's ability to pass is. Mobile QBs have long been a staple of WCOs. Having a guy that can move in the pocket, pick up yards with his feet in scramble situations, and possibly even run some read option type plays is only an additional benefit to Borges. But it certainly isn't something that Borges sees and think "Oh no, we can't have that. Maybe I'd recruit that kid if he cut off his feet so he couldn't run."

It's insane how black and white people are with this stuff.

I'd say he's more like Morris than anything else as far as running ability. That's really all Oregon needs, if they have a guy that can take 3-5 carries a game when defenses clearly over commit to the RB and then sit back and sling the ball all over the field they are just as dangerous if not more so than when they have a great running threat at the QB position (assuming there is some exclusive quality between great runner and great passer, because not everyone is RGIII).

This is awesome - I live in Valencia, which is basically the same town as Newhall. Hart and Valencia HS are big rivals, and I was planning on going to that game anyway. Now I will for sure.

Well, you're kinda of right. Hart HS, the building, is in Newhall, but Newhall is small and most of the district that feeds into Hart is Valencia, so most of the kids who go there actually live in Valencia. The divider is basically Valencia Blvd if you look on a map. Everything north of that (me) in Valencia is VHS, and everything south of that in Valencia or Newhall is Hart.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet Brady White lives in Valencia.

Has been for years churning out top QB's at the high school level. They also kill it in baseball recruits. Will be hard to swing this kid as the San Fernando Valley and above kids usually are All SC. Lets hope That Hoke can get this kid on the move.

This kid can absolutely spin the ball. Leads receivers and throws a very catchable ball. Id really like to see him on campus. He reminds me of Drew Brees a bit. Playmaker gunslinger that looks like a serious stat guy in college. I think Speight is great too...this kid is a different type and thats not a bad thing to have some versatility under center. I think we need to keep the options open in regards to the dual threats. That is where college football is now and it looks to be there for a while...that being said...Sugar Shane looks fairly fleet of foot and ill take an EJ or Luck type mobility anyday of the week. Does not have to be the Vick/Braxton/Denard model.

Someone put together a rather nice highlight reel for Brady White. It looks like he has a pretty good arm as it is - the opening screen, in fact, mentions that he threw for over 2,500 and completed 67% of his passes.

He has a hell of an offer sheet already, as someone else said it is a bit ridiculous how early you have to get in on some of these kids especially as they had yet to play a game of their junior year when a lot of these offers were given.  Looks like the kid has two people from Ohio working on him as well; a bit strange as their offense would not seem to fit the pro style QB and shade to the dual threat types.

And I wouldn't call either Manning at this stage, but that's a pretty fair comparison as far as comparing skill sets. One is a decent athlete that can sling the ball all over the field with good velocity and accuracy. The other has a cannon arm but is a bit more raw in delivery and accuracy, but is a pretty damn good athlete as well.

For how much of a whacko Leaf was and how poorly he did as a highly drafted pro, he was a damn fine college QB. It's like when people say someone looks like Joey Harrington passing the ball... well if Michigan gets a college QB that looks like Harrington did as a college QB than Michigan will be in damn good hands.

top flight QB's rolling in, peeps. It's crazy how far out some of these targets are, and how early teams have to jump on their trail before these kids get locked up. I have a feeling our best recruiting tool will be our season this year. It just feels like we're about to do some things.
