24 hours is up...time to concentrate on Iowa

I'm sure you've all heard the "coach-speak" regarding the 24-hour rule:  enjoy (or in our case, sulk) for 24 hours and then start preparing for the next opponent.  Nothing can change what happened yeterday, we can only control what happens next.

Next is a good (not great) Iowa team.

4-1 on the season with their only loss being on the road at Arizona (who lost last night to Orgeon State.)

  • 33.6ppg
  • 426ypg/avg
  • 1271 pass yds/861 rush yards
  • 46.7% 3rd down conversion

They are know, of course, for their defense which is currently ranked at or near the top in points and yards yielded.

I was as nervous for the State game as I was when I was playing.  I can only imagine how the players felt.  You find out a lot about yourself after a loss like yesterday.  I'm quite confident the team gets focused, settles down, works their asses off, and comes into the game this Saturday with a nice big chip on their shoulder.

Your thoughts?

Ever since the begining of

Ever since the begining of the year, I felt that we could win this game and I still think that. I dont know why, I just think sometimes you match up better against certain teams. That game last year at Iowa makes me think we are going to pull this one out.

I think

I think, amongst many other things, we will learn if Denard has that 'ol killer instinct. I believe he does and that he will play a stellar offensive game. My major concern is giving up big plays to Iowa's run game, it deflates the D and puts the O under tremendous pressure to score, which may lead to turnovers. In short, Denard bounces back big time, the defense gets a couple big plays, and we feel real good all during the bye week

I'm about to freak out, Michigan and the Lions have a bye week the same weekend. I might accomplish more that weekend than what I have the previous year.

GAFF!

-1 to whomever decided on that schedule. I blame Millen!

FWIW, there's a a Wings game on that Saturday, in Detroit, against the Ducks, so maybe your weekend won't be as productive as you thought. HOORAY for hockey!

this

team will come back from this. losing may be the best thing for this team at this point. i think this team will have a huge chip on its shoulder as all the pundits will be saying this week that this is what happened a year ago. but im almost certain that this team is not the same as lat year. i think we are in for a special season and we may have some ups and downs.

now ultimately iowas schedule wasnt tough. the combined record is 8-16. Our advantage this week will be balance on on the o side of the ball. we cany afford not to execute this week and i think once denard gets a good look at some negative film he will learn to get back to what got us to 5-0 and that is to take what is given and not to force anything. one thing is certain i bet he doesnt hesitate as much this week. when he sees a crease he has to take it. i think this week will be special.

on the d side of the ball please get obi ezeh out and lets someone else. we need a player that attemps to show instincts and tries to fill gaps. im also ready for will campbell. its obvious that we are not disciplined on defense. but if we can limit big plays and we all know stanzi is good for a few bad balls we can try to take advantage of we can really get after iowa.

its important as fans to remember last year after the o-sate game the comments made by b.graham. he said this team is hard working and michigan would be back. i remember and emotional roy roundtree who wasl crying at the posium. this team cares and the people who didnt belong and left will look back and say this group was special and they didnt belong for whatever the reason. go blue from columbus ohio. and believe the buckeye fans i work with will never let me hear the end of it and o-sate is number 1. but guess what they still have to play us and we can get a lot better by sept 27th.

defense

I'm curious if Gerg calls an aggressive defense or plays it soft and conservative like against Indiana. I guess it's pick your poison.

I'm heading to Ann Arbor for

I'm heading to Ann Arbor for the Iowa game  and I've been looking forward to this since July. I've got on-the-field passes, great seats, my eye on a triple with cheese at Blimpy Burger before the game (maybe a quint?), the victor's walk, and hopefully some great weather.

Best weekend of the year = this weekend. It's time to move past this sinking feeling, and get on with it. Beat Iowa - Go Blue!

It's a huge game, no doubt

It's a huge game, no doubt about it.

The team (and Denard especially) will  have to forget the loss and move on.  The tough part is that Iowa is similar to MSU, and I don't think the coaches are going to want the players reviewing film from a demoralizing loss.  Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

This game could end up deciding the season:  Win, then go to the bye week and settle in for the stretch run.  Lose, and the team could really start to question itself, and memories of 2009 start creeping in.

I had so much hope when the MSU game came around that

I truly believed this was going to be the year that we finally end their two year streak and shut them up for the rest of the year but sadly I was wrong. I'm not trying to be negative and I don't like nor want to be but this game has really brought back my fears from 2009. I just want to see us out for blood and a victory this Saturday. All we want is a bowl, is that so much to ask for all the pain we have suffered through?

As I contemplate the year that has become Denard

I think back to the Iowa game last year when a very different Denard couldn't quite push us past a supposedly stout Iowa team on their home turf.

I'm sure Denard remembers that game and I know he's going to be focused on producing a different outcome.

With that in mind and hopefully at least one Stanzi pick-six special, I'm liking our chances here.

That game out of all the games on the 2009 schedule still

eats at me the most because we had such a great chance to pull out that upset! We picked off Stanzi and ran it back for a td, controlled the ball almost that entire 1st half and scored quickly and often. Everything in the beginning was going our way and then we just collapsed. It was almost like we were too tired or not in the same zone that we entered the game in mentally. It's one that we let slip through our fingers. We can't let that happen again this year.

The Stanzi can make mistakes if he is pressured.

Stanzi seems more of a game

Stanzi seems more of a game manager.  If I had to pick, I'd take Cousins over Stanzi.

I agree the IA D line is great.

We need a good mix of pass and run. If they bring their LB to line DROB will need to throw.  Hopefully the passing game will be back on track.  If our offense plays well we could outscore IA.  I hope we can get the upset win! That would sort of make up for losing to sparty!

A win this Saturday will be

just what Michigan needs to jump start that confidence they are lacking right now. This win has a great amount of potential of being a season changer! These guys need something to believe in right now and an upset over Iowa is the perfect solution!

i believe...

that the lack of confidence lies within some M Fans, not the players themselves!  one cannot speak for the players lack of confidence unless they have themselves heard them speak.  not attacking but making a point that most of what you here in this blog is fan insecurities not player insecurities.  Trust that RR and staff (especially the dog days/hours of Barwais workouts) have prepared them mentally!  also to mention they who were here for last year are a year older, wiser, stronger, more talented, etc.  GO BLUE beat iowa!

I know it 's tough on the players, but I know they'll get over the loss and move on. With mistakes and poor execution this is what happens.  I'm headed to the Big House for Iowa, I wanted to see  [I bought the tickets before the season] what I thought would be the best team UM would face at home this year. I think we will win this game, Homecoming, and they've never lost when I attend a game, including Wisc. '08. If they win, I'll try to make every game.

I'll be making my lone trip

I'll be making my lone trip to the Big House this weekend, so my thoughts are that I'll see a W or it's going to be a long drive back to South Carolina.

This next game is crucial.

A bounce back win stops the negativity before it can fester.

Let's look to our next opponent as a example of hope.

Kirk Ferentz started 1-10, 3-9, and 7-5 in his first 3 years at Iowa.

The next 3 years after that he went 11-2, 10-3, and 10-2.

Lets go boys. Circle the wagons!

Perfect timing (sorry can't +1 from iPhone)

The lessons are learned from the loss and the team moves forward. Not worrying about things you can't control is one of the best lessons anyone can learn.

Me, I understand that I must not have been loud enough Saturday. I'll get that fixed. And I'll be in EL next year when they can do something about it, dressed in M gear from head to toe. It's been much too long since I've been out there. I'm going to buy fuckin' pants

I don't think Iowa is that great

Their best win is over PSU, in Iowa.  Who got smoked by the Illini, at home.  The 'Zona game wasn't as close as the score indicated - Iowa was outplayed.  I think every other team Iowa has played is a cupcake.

I do like that Iowa has 2 weeks to prep for this game, that is clearly in their favor.

Obvs - Michigan is not that great either, but this is a very winnable game.

signature win

I have a gut feeling Rich Rod will get a signature win this year and Iowa could well be the one.......either that or Purdue

Hawkeye Update...

Hey guys, back to provide some info on Iowa.  One of these days I'll be big enough to start my own thread, but evidently not yet.

On offense, we're seeing a much better Ricky Stanzi this year both in decision making and throwing ability in general.  There's good reason he's now #3 in the nation in passing effiiciency.  He also has probably the best receiving corps I've seen in my 30 years of watching the Hawks with McNutt, DJK, Davis (new guy) and Sandeman.  Chaney is also back from an ACL suffered last year vs. you guys and is starting to have a bigger role in the offense.  Of course, there's the TEs and both Reisner and Herman have been solid.  Waiting in the wings here is true frosh CJ Fiedorowicz (#5 TE prospect last year).

We've lost Jewel Hampton (again) for the year with another ACL, which really hurts as he had breakaway ability that Adam Robinson just doesn't.  Robinson is a very solid back, but isn't going to run away from anyone.  Backups haven't played much, but have potential.  Marcus Coker is a 6' 230lb true frosh bruiser who was a little beat up earlier in the season which has delayed his growth and PT.  Brad Rogers (bowling ball) may also get in the game here and there, but Robinson will get 90% of the carries at least.

The OL so far has been decent for needing to replace three starters.  At least this year the unit has remained intact and consistent, which is so important in a zone blocking scheme.  Reiff at LT is a star in the making.  Ferentz in the middle has been overwhelmed from time to time against bigger DTs, but is a tough, smart player that you'd expect from a coaches kid.

In looking at the unit as a whole, I would have to say that they're improved from last year, but we're one more RB injury away from having to play guys with essentially zero experience.  Stanzi really has been the difference this year and you'll not likely see any more pick sixes ( the one in Arizona should have been caught by the receiver).  Still trying to be balanced, they pretty much coasted through the second half against Penn St, choosing to run the ball into 8 man fronts knowing the defense would hold the lead.

They play very clean and very efficiently, as you'd expect from a Ferentz coached team.  The emergence of the WRs has given them more explosiveness than we're used to seeing in Iowa City.  I would look for Iowa going deep early and often to test your depleated backfield, rather than using the run to set up the pass as you'd expect.

Thanks for the info!

This game will tell us (UM) if we're mature enough to bring ourselves back up and play like we know we can. Iowa was always a question mark game for me. We really need to improve execution on both sides of the ball. If we can do that we can play with anyone IMO.

Again thanks for the info!

Hopefully Stanzi has the same

Hopefully Stanzi has the same passing success this week as #3 in pass efficiency going into last week - Denard Robinson.

"Robinson can't run away from anyone"

Fortunately, my grandmother could beat Cameron Gordon in a footrace so you have nothing to worry about this week

Our D could use

some Stanzi balls.  For godsakes find the TE.

Last years team performance in Iowa City was encouraging coming off a pretty gut wrenching defeat in East Lansing.

This year's Moo U game was just deflating for different reasons.  It would be a great step for this program if they could get the W this weekend.

Also, if Ezeh could avoid

Also, if Ezeh could avoid running out of the hole rather than into it, that would be great.

While losing to state still

While losing to state still stings, we have plenty of games to make this a good year. A win vs Iowa and our confidence is back as we finish the year.

not hopeful at all

Iowa is basically a better version of msu.  They also had a bye week to prepare for us.  if Denard has a truly great performance, then maybe.  But I'm not holding my breath.

Yup

We lost. It happens. Not everybody can play lights out every game. Our opponent had an excellent game plan, stuck to it, and got just the breaks they needed. Keeping us out of the end zone was their goal, and they succeeded. Play it again, and maybe not. Oh well.

11-1 is the new goal. Bring on Stanzi!
