23 named Academic All-B1G for Michigan Football, program record

If this doesn't matter to potential recruits' parents, it should.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:30 AM ^
If it doesn't matter to certain recruits, they probably aren't the kind of kids we want at the program.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:50 AM ^
Disagree with this so much. Just because someone doesn't care that much about acedemics at age 17/18 doesn't mean they are a bad person, and it certainly doesn't mean they will learn that value as they mature. In my opinion it is shameful to judge that if someone doesn't care about being Acedemic All-B16 they are not worthy of Michigan football

One could argue that if they don't care about academics they may not be as driven as we would want.
December 8th, 2016 at 2:48 PM ^
however, it's not a guarantee. I know I cared about academics going into college, but I didn't have an athletic scholarship. If I was a top 100 recruit, I would expect to be getting drafted in 3-4 years and my #1 priority would have been to improve my draft stock. I can always go back and get a degree, but I only have so many years where I can use my body to make millions of dollars. I think having all-academic B1G players is a good thing, and a positive on the recruiting trail, but have you noticed that almost none of our best players are on that list? JL, Peppers, Hurst, Speight, Darboh, Deveon, the list keeps going on. Because they aren't academic all B1G players, we don't want them? That is a pretty ridiculous idea

It should matter to Aubrey Solomon's mama

Isnt Furbush aerospace engineering?
December 8th, 2016 at 11:44 AM ^
My son is, but doesn't have to balance with football and still finds the workload to be significant
December 8th, 2016 at 12:47 PM ^
Roster says so. Pretty impressive.
But it doesn't have a lot of majors for the other guys - might be they haven't updated in a while. Even the seniors it says 'enrolled in LS&A, major undeclared' for a few of them...
December 8th, 2016 at 12:52 PM ^

2 business (Jordan Glasgow, Joe Hewlett)
2 poli sci (Joe Beneducci, Garrett Moores)
3 sport management (Mo Hurst, Ryan Tice, Chris Wormley)
2 general studies (Bryan Mone, Kenny Allen)
1 each in International Studies, American Culture, Economics, Information, Evolutionary Anthropology, Sociology, Organizational Studies, Cognitive Science, Health & Fitness

Wasn't Harbaugh a real lunatic about academics while at Stanford? So much so that he even called out Michigan's academic practices?
I like to think he's not putting them through cupcake classes. Hoping they're getting a good education!

they again fail to see the rotten log in their eyes.
Just look at the type and quality of classes at MSU/OSU compare to UM.

Ohio State and Michigan State combined. I'd throw Penn State in there too but that would be wishful thinking. Are there numbers available for all the B1G teams?
Edit: Just did a little Googling and spoke too soon, MSU had a record 22, fwiw. Penn State 19.
Ohio State ... Twelve.
Wow Minnesota had a ton.
This is pretty amazing. Great work by the coaches and student athletes.

Illinois, Minnesota, and unsurprisingly Northwestern lead the way. For OSU, it looks like Sam Hubbard is the only one on their list who actually plays.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:54 AM ^
that OSU had 12. I guess some of those dudes actually went to Columbus to play school, also. Good for them.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:33 AM ^
With an inferior number to Michigan, at 22.

the perfect little brother
December 8th, 2016 at 11:35 AM ^
It should matter to us even if it doesn't matter to the recruits. It is something we should expect from our coaching staff as much as wins on the field. Good news.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:35 AM ^
Look at the defensive line - Wormley, Hurst & Mone. Workin hard everyday.
As someone who regrettably spent most of my scholarly career on academic probation, I applaud this.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:36 AM ^
but what are the requirements for academic all big ten? Obviously certain academic requirements are needed but some of these guys barely saw the field.
Not knocking the recognition they are receiving for their academic achievements, but I would have thought the players would have to have played a decent amount on Saturdays.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:39 AM ^
Do you think Harbaugh doesnt make these guys attend practice? Im sure even the 5th stringers were held to same standard as 1st under Harbaugh.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:44 AM ^
they attend practices, but is this strictly an academic award? If you're on the roster and you achieve a certain gpa, are you automaticly academic all big ten?
December 8th, 2016 at 11:37 AM ^
Harbaugh has brought us football and academic success... who has it better than us?
December 8th, 2016 at 11:38 AM ^
I'm sure these lists often consist of mostly walk-ons. Harbaugh must take great pride to see team leaders like Jake Butt, Ben Gedeon, Maurice Hurst, and Chris Wormley receive this honor.
December 8th, 2016 at 11:51 AM ^
Does anyone know the requirements? I know google - but still. Thanks.

Proud of this group top to bottom.

I'm one of those dinosaurs who believe in the student-athlete concept.
The very best thing a scholarship should give a kid isn't the remote possibility of playing pro ball, it's the very real opportunity to get a great education that will benefit the rest of their life.
Congratulations to these kids (not just UM's either, but any kid who works his/her butt off to excel in academics and sports), and thanks to all the folks who work hard to help them achieve their goals.
Further congratulations to JH for emphasizing academic success. I would love if this gets mentioned along with his quirks and envelope-pushing.
Go Blue!

Congratulations to all of these hard working guys!

on the field and in the classroom. This is very encouraging news. Thanks for posting.
