23-game win-streak

Submitted by glewe on

Last time Ohio came to Ann Arbor with a streak like the one they presently have (22-game streak then, of course), Bo Schembechler handled them. He had losses to Mizzou and Staee coming into the game.

Don't take me for an overly optimistic fool--just trying to generate a little excitement about next weekend.

Rivalry intangibles mean a lot of things can happen. Hope for Hoke.

Bear in mind that only ONE of our losses has been delivered by greater than one score, and that was by the team that obsesses over us more than any other team.

But next week we'll play a team where the obsession is mutual. It's not impossible.

Go Blue. Beat Ohio.

Edit: From Wolverine Devotee:

"Even Bacon agreed with me on twitter, you can throw the records out the window in this rivalry.

The underdog has played up to their competition a ton of times and sometimes have even pulled the upset.

Just to name a few from the last 30 years-

1987, 1988, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2011, 2012"

Honestly, right now, I have less hope for our fanbase than I do for our team. Take a break if you're really feeling this low from an underachieving season. Spend some time with family, or get ahead on work. But being as self-loathing as (or possibly more than) Sparty will not save this season.

It's all about who you hire. That's how you have a down part of the cycle. OSU has been lucky to not blow a coaching hire since 1950. Michigan hadn't until 2008. And perhaps again in 2011. The brand is too stong for you guys to be done once you find the right guy again.

They were also riding a 4-game winning streak where they had not scored fewer than 35 nor allowed more than 9. The week before they played OSU they went to Iowa City and kicked the crap out of the Hawkeyes 51-6 and the players chanted "Beat the Buckeyes" at the top of their lungs in the locker room after the game.

I really hope we beat OSU like the '69 team did, but that team was hitting on all cylinders for a month before they played The Game. This situation is a little more analagous to the 1995 and 1996 seasons. In '95, Michigan had lost two of their previous 3 games (and the win was a 5-0 shitfest over Purdue). In '96, Michigan had lost both of its games leading up to the OSU game. But Michigan found a way to win against OSU teams that were both ranked #2.

Let's hope this group finds a way as well.

I do agree though, you can't compare 1969 to this at all because that 1969 Michigan team was rolling coming into The Game.

I don't understand the people who already have their mind made up like the game has already been played & they know the outcome or they & live and die by the Vegas odds. I mean, why even watch the games then if you are so sure? Sounds pretty misreable.

Come on, man. We can throw around all sorts of "any given Saturday" platitudes, but  name me one of those games where there was a similar, obvious gap in talent level and execution across the season. Shit, there are more than a few games on that list where both teams were ranked, sometimes both in the top 5!

OSU is blowing out everyone. Video game style. We're struggling to run the ball on defenses that gave up 200+ to tomato cans. The differential is much, much higher. There's no amount of studying YouTube game film and poring over stat binders that can change that.

The sooner you realize this the better. This team is lost. Until changes are made we will continue to under-achieve. I commend those of you who plan on watching the game. Be safe. Me? I need a break.

I'm so sick of these types of comments. "Last time Ohio did such and such, we beat them."

This isn't 1960whatever or 1990whatever.

The buckeyes are going to destroy Michigan and if you don't think so, you really need to get with reality. There is no valid reason to believe that our beloved Wolverines will win this game. Our offense is inept and the defense, while pretty solid, has been on the field too long thanks to the offense's ineptitude, which causes them to tire and get dominated in the fourth quarter, such as we saw today.

I think the buckeyes will win by at least 21 points, quite possibly more. It absolutely kills me to say and believe that, but it's likely what will happen. Their football program is just on a different level than ours, which sucks more than most thing, but it's the truth. We have a LONG way to go.

You can say ''throw out records for this game'' all you want, but that won't make things better. That was said in 2008 and 2010 too...we lost 42-7 and 37-7. This team is probably worse at this point than the 2010 team.

What's left when you throw out the records?  Michigan is still a rudderless ship on offense, and the defense is still ten fingers trying to plug 20 holes in a leaky dam.

Ohio State on the other hand has a decent defense, and an explosive offense.

Throwing out the records might actually make things worse.

It's possible that Michigan-fan Aliens singing The Victors will take our coaches onto a spaceship, and implant coaching brilliance into their minds. It's possible that they will give these newly-minted geniuses a miracle strength and talent elixir and flubber cleats to give to the team. It's possible that Michigan will play the greatest game in the history of college football, not merely upsetting OSU and breaking their win streak, but clobbering them and giving us a game for the ages to remember the rest of our lives.

These things are possible; anything is possible.

Unfortunately, I don't really think this is likely to happen. I'm pretty much a reality-based guy, and am wondering whether OSU will let up and play their second-string after they hang 50-60 points on our misbegotten group of players in the first half.

Go Blue, but stay safe out there...

It isn't impossible, of course. As someone who lives in a world of statistics, I sort of bristle at the generous use of the term "impossible". We certainly could be triumphant next Saturday. Now, that being said, predictive analytics would say that this is not a likely prospect, of course, and on many measures, rightly so. Still not impossible, merely improbable given the current trend.

Maybe if we win the turnover battle like 3-1 and get a score on defense and they miss an easy field goal... Wait, that happened today.

Even if we play our best game since the Minnesota game, still would come up short, like Iowa did 34-24 to Ohio.

MSU has a prayer thanks to the D and their ability to run the ball. Pretty sad that MSU is what we want to become.

I'm going to the game Saturday out of respect for all of the great players and coaches who did beat Ohio over the years. Yep...living in the past, but can't wait for this POS season to end. At least I was there for home wins in '83, '85, '89', '91, '93, '95, '97, '03, and '11.

Borges is going to be calling plays like a mad scientist. We're going to see wishbone, pistol, RR spread option, Stanford multiple tight end sets, etc. Triple reverse WR passes, flea flickers, fumblerooskis, wildcat plays and a million other things we could have tried instead of the three plays Al loves that never works. He's going to channel his inner Chip Kelly.

We're still gonna lose by 30 though.

Hey, that's fine. If hiding those plays all year just to save them for the Ohio game is just fine. Even if Borges broke those plays out earlier, this team likely still would not have won more games. I'm perfectly fine with all new plays if it means we beat Ohio and ruin their streak and shot at the BCS title game. I mean, at this point, that's all we have to play for. It's clear that M is going to some third tier bowl game, which they will probably lose since it will be away from the Big House, but beating Ohio next week will temporarily make me forgive Borges and his awful play calling all season.

a Honda commercial that was talking about giving a free car to people if UM shutout OSU. That gave me a good laugh.

Seriously though, normally I am one to say anything can happen in college football, but is it just not happening with the current state of the offense. I think the bigger question is whether OSU backs off once they have the game in hand or tries to run up the score. As others have said this is not 1969.

If the game gets out of hand, which I expect it to, I will bet anyone $1,000 that Meyer keeps most of his starters in the game at least through the third quarter, possibly early fourth. He isn't dumb and knows another blowout win can do nothing but help his team in the eyes of voters. Granted, FSU or Alabama need to lose a game for Ohio to jump them, but another blowout doesn't hurt the Buckeyes. That being said, if Baylor wins on the road tonight in Stillwater, they should and likely will jump Ohio to number three.

Not to be too much of a Debbie Downer, but Michigan is not beating OSU next weekend. And the score is going to be really ugly, because OSU is going to be motivated to score a lot of style points to leap into the #2 spot.

I Have A Gnarly Face

November 23rd, 2013 at 8:12 PM ^

Also, I'd like to add that I'm so sick and fucking tired of Buckeye fans' whining about their team's not getting respect in the polls. THEY HAVE WON 23 GAMES IN A ROW! Good LORD I would love to know what that feels like. They can't just enjoy that for what it is. I'd love to see how loyal they are if their team goes through what we have over the past ten years. I have to believe we would not see 1/3 to 1/2 of their oppnents' stadiums covered in red.

As much as I fully believe we have the talent to play with OSU...we should have beaten them last year in Columbus, we beat them the year before, we have them at home, etc...we are too far down right now to get back up in a week.  We don't have an offensive identity.  We are emotionally drained.  I don't Gardner can get his confidence going enough to produce much next week.  We need longer than a week to mentally recover from the frustration that has been building the last 6 weeks since the Penn State debacle.  And, OSU is riding high, Hyde is running hard, Shazier is playing lights out, and Meyer is focused on putting the screws to us.  We are in for a long day.  It's gonna be ugly.  I am still optimisitc about our future if we can get rid of Borges, but I have no hopes against OSU.  I will still hate on them, but it's hard to talk smack when you know you're gonna lose.

I expect a big blowout and a packed stadium filled with OSU fans.

And forget Borges, most of the offensive staff should be fired. There is no reason why anyone besides the WR coach should have a job next year.

Why is it that we constantly have to reference a guy who's not coached the team in nearly 25 years? No one on this team was even alive when Bo coached Michigan.

Bo was a great man and a heck of a coach. But he's not even the best coach in our history. Fielding Yost was.

He didn't coach the longest. Yost did.

He doesn't have the most bowl wins. Lloyd does.

He never won a national title. Yost, Crisler, Oosterban, and Carr did.

He never had a Heisman winner. Moehler and Carr did.

He has the most Big Ten Titles (13) only because Yost's Michigan left the Big Ten for ten years. (Yost won 10 Big Ten titles).

He doesn't have the best record against OSU. Yost does.

He won the most games, but only because he played more. He doesn't have the highest winning percentage, Yost does. (.808 to .785).

I get that a lot of fans today worship Bo because he was the coach when they were going to Michigan. I also get that it was a tumultous time on campus and that he helped bring stability and unity in a chaotic era on campus.  But, we need to stop the worshipping of this guy. Michigan tradition didn't start with Bo, which is why he wanted to coach at Michigan. Did Bo add to our tradition? You bet.  We are in this mess, partly, because we are constantly looking backwards rather than forward.

Wolverine Devotee

November 23rd, 2013 at 8:42 PM ^

  1. Who the hell is Moehler? Maybe you mean Gary MOELLER?
  2. Yost dominated when college football was an East coast dominated sport by the Ivys. Which is why there was an Ivy League team retroactively awarded a MNC from 1901-1904. They only played teams in their region back then since the only way they could travel was by train. Michigan played no more than two true road games early in his career.

cp4three2

November 23rd, 2013 at 8:50 PM ^

I mispelled Moeller's name and Yost dominated his peers but it doesn't count because it happened a long time ago? Yost created Michigan tradition. Bo talked about it. On the night of his vigil Dierdorf (i think it was Dierdorf) talked about how Bo constantly talked about Yost, etc.

My entire point is that what Bo did 40 years ago means no more than what Yost did 100 years ago. We are constantly living in the past as a program.

Wolverine Devotee

November 23rd, 2013 at 8:53 PM ^

No, I did not say that. I'm saying you cannot compare Bo to Yost and argue which one is better because they coached in different eras.

The forward pass wasn't even legal for a majority of Yost's career.
