This is the descending # of points M has scored against Sparty since 2008.  We have not scored a TD against Sparty since the 2011 season (3 years ago).  Does the trend continue?  After watching OSU destroy Rutgers yesterday I say yes, but then Sparty had trouble in Bloomington so I am cautiously optimistic.  Thoughts?

I am hoping for the Defense to keep it close. That is the only way to win the game. Atomic dog has to score. Def score. If that happens and they shut them down, I can see a win. I don't have much confidence in offense to score much. I do think they will advance the ball enough to score some FGs. It is the DEF and ST that are the keys. If they can pull a miracle there, I can see it happening. slim chance, but I am rooting for our D to be a terror. That is what we need.

So if Michigan scores 7 or more points and breaks this cycle Saturday, albeit in a four-TD rout, does Hoke get another of his moral victories ala Ohio State last year, the kind of moral victories a certain subset of this fanbase seem to be just dying for an excuse to give him?

I'm not sure about your logic there. Sparty had a tiny bit of trouble on the road, and we will be on the road when we face them. How is this in our favor come Saturday?

Penn State being awful and the bye week offered a nice feel-good reprieve from an otherwise historically bad season. However, it was more sleight-of-hand than reality and this week reality bites.

Hoke will have them fired up on the road with a solid plan. He will make great adjustments during the game while being engaged with the coordinators.

I like to hope that the reality of knowing he is likely coaching for his job is enough to instill a major sense of urgency in Hoke, in terms of game-planning and getting his players motivated. But I can't help but feel this strong inkling that reality takes a lengthy period to set in with this guy.

Why do people keep acting like MSU struggled against Indiana?  They won by 39 points.  Does the defense look as good as last year?  Absolutely not, but the offense looks much better.

Again, Michigan State won by more than 5 touchdowns in this game.  It's easy to nitpick and throw in the "at times" label, but we need to recognize that we're criticizing a team for beating someone by 39 points.  The margin of victory was more than double what Indiana scored.  When you take a step back and look at it from that perspective, why we're even bringing up the thought that MSU struggled last weekend is beyond me.

Also, for as "bad" as that defense looked on Saturday, they shut out IU in the 2nd Half.  I think people are massively overreacting to a relatively competitive 1st Half.  Remember when Michigan hung around with MSU in the 1st Half last year?  Have yet to see anybody argue that one was a close game.

Edit: Just wanted to add this little tidbit.  During the last 4 seasons, just 3(!!!) teams have managed to score 35 points against MSU.  Those were 2014 Oregon, 2011 Wisconsin, and 2010 Alabama.  So, since that Big Ten title game in 2011, only Oregon (at home) could manage 35 points against the Spartans.  Obviously, this is a flawed analysis as I'm comparing multiple years here, but I just want to point out how difficult it has been just to score 35 points against MSU and, in this case, IU would have needed 39 just to tie.  My point here is that even if 39 points doesn't sound that insane to score - it should - it is very, very tough to put that many up against a good team.

This will look like last year's game. Defense will keep it close-ish for a while but the lack of offensive output will lead to a tired and demoralized defense that will be manhandled in the latter half of the game. Sparty 41-3

From the very first game this season, I walked away from the Big House saying, "We're just not that good." I know that our players recieved stars from people who don't coach to support the whole supposition that our team is really talented, but I just don't agree. I think we have a few guys on either side of the ball who are really B1G Div 1 starters, and the rest are just not very good. It kind of reminds me of when Florida scrapped their scouting department and relied solely on Rivals and other recruting sites for who was the best prospects. They have never recovered from that, and I wonder if we fell in a similar trap. The classes look top 5-10 on paper, but these recruiting services are NOT COACHES. They really don't know what the hell they are talking about.

I think we get crushed like La Cucaracha. 35-6 MSU

Will Sparty have the garbage blowing on the field again this year? The hot dog sleeve tornadoes in the endzones last year were kinda cool looking.

To me rivaly games are boring and not worth it when one team sucks (us) and one team is a playoff contender (puke green)...that is why they were never our top rival when they always sucked and msu fans get upset when we say osu is the main rival

I think this is the game where Sparty puts on a complete game after the last few weeks. Dantonio will refuse to allow his team to sleepwalk through one second of this game.

It'll be somewhat like last year. Defense will keep it respectable for maybe half the game, maybe come up with a turnover. But unless its a pick six, we'll get zero points out of it. MSU's defense will play lights out for 4 quarters, although they wouldn't have to try that hard considering the dumpster fire that is our offense. At some point in the 3rd quarter, our defense is gassed and demoralized. They can't stay off the field to rest long enough because we constantly go 3 and out. My money says we'll constantly be be put in bad field position too.

Being backed up constantly inside our own 20 yard line doesn't bode well when we have to punt away and give Sparty a short field to work with. This is one ugly game by the 4th quarter. 42-10. Touchdown is scored in garbage time when Gardner really just throws up a Hail Mary on 4th and 25.

These numbers also coincide with my decreasing level of care and time spent on Michigan football which is equally sad and I hope to correct at some point.

If Michigan had played Purdue and Indiana the way State did, people would be saying how overrated we were at number 5. Anybody else in the top 10 would depants them like Oregon did.

The offense this year is challenged and that doesn't help anything going into this game. They will do good to score at least two TDs at MSU. I'm predicting one TD and maybe 1-2 FGs. They will have to hope for a season best performace from the defense to win. My only hope is that the coaches throw everything at this game because that's probably their best chance, they have nothing to lose. More conservative play calling and it's a guaranteed loss.

This is the part where we say "Beat Sparty" repeatedly all fucking week, watch the game on Saturday for about twelve minutes, and then get horribly,  shit-faced, sloppy drunk and decide it wise mow the lawn in the dark with a mild head injury.

My prediction: MSU is going to roger Michigan all afternoon.  This is not because of superior talent. Michigan has more 4 and 5 star players than MSU has, and this has been true dating back to 2008 and well before.

The difference is that MSU has had football coaches who actually coach and develop football players better.   They're not imaginitive, but they're strong in coaching fundamentals.  If you think this fact is going to be overcome by Michigan over a by week period, thenforget it.  That's delusional.

Sure, okay, yeah.... I expect a few Sparty fuck ups on Saturday.  They haven't played one game this year without some really dumb mistakes, but nothing to cost them a game. At least I'm not pretending those errors equal a Michigan upset. That'd be horseshit.

There is not one matchup of player or team that favors Michigan this Saturday. This is why I'm expecting the worst loss of the year, and quite possibly another shutout.   Expect a lot of "Hold Me" posts, while UM fan visits to puppy and kitty cat webpages skyrocket on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. I'll be there with you, or maybe the emergency room. I haven't decided.

My prediction is that the "want" will be there and it may be close for 1-2 quarters but eventually MSU with physically more mature and physically superior players will pull away. It will probably not be a close final score. It'll be the final nail in Hoke's UM head coaching career.

Yep, perfect year to reverse the scoring trend, what with fielding the worst offense in Michigan history this year, that's so bad it would be considered the worst offense in the MAC...

Trend won't improve much this year, and we'll soon be firing our second coach in a row who throws a dart at a board in terms of any concept associated with the other side of the ball that he isn't familiar with.

Can't believe a coach can earn over $4M a year without the slightest concept about offense.

Biggest sham hire ever.  Oh, but nice guy though, blah blah.
