2020 BBall Target Steve Pearson

Submitted by Matt EM on

Normally a freshman prospect isn't really worth talking about very much, but with the team coming off an impressive victory over MSU yesterday, seems appropriate to talk a bit more hoops recruiting with some down time for football.

I train a kid by the name of Steve Pearson, a freshman at Detroit Northwestern. He's a 6'2 guard that is a freakish athlete for a HS freshman.

I know most crave the top 50 types with great athleticism (myself included)........the type of prospects that end up at UK, Arizona, Duke, etc. While Steve certainly isn't there yet, with continued skillset development, he certainly has the potential to be a top 50 type of prospect because his athletic ability is absolutely insane at his age. I'd venture to say he'd be the second best athlete on Michigan's roster right now.

Oh, and the best part about it, he's a die hard Michigan fan. I've taken him for visits 4 times over the past few months or so.

Here are some highlights from his high school debut that I composed in December

I'm one that is rooting like hell for Beilein.  When things click, especially with the focus on defense beginning to take root, I love his brand of ball.  Here's hoping that Pearson becomes a Wolverine.

The top dunk is something Steve did at my camp in October...........which is absolutley ridiculous for a college/professional player, let alone a HS freshman.

The second video is a clip of one of the workouts I put him through over the summer.

I was expecting to see a decent player whose trainer is trying to get him more pub. But wow....This kid's athleticism is off of the charts. I cannot believe he is a HS freshman. He will be a big time prospect if he keeps working on his game to go along with that God given talent.

and many of them hold Division I offers, but not high-major material at this point, and no interest from Michigan. I wouldn't bring any kid I train, let alone 2020 prospect, to this board without it being something substantial in terms of talent/athletic ability and mutual interest existed.

Incredible. The sky's the limit for this kid. I hope to see him with the program in a few years! Maybe you can just send film to Beilein/Next Coach Up for the next few years and keep him under the radar. We don't want UK or Duke to see these videos ;)

and saw Greg play in person as recently as last week. As of right now, Mo Bamba is the priority, and until a definitive no or a commitment is made to either Michigan or any other school, all other prospects will likely take a back seat.

I'm a huge fan of Greg's game, think he criminally underrated. Hopefully we get involved with Greg if things don't pan out for Bamba. Would love to add him to the 2017 class.

FWIW Greg is taking an official visit to Marquette on Feb. 18

I was surprised that Greg didn't commit to MSU soon after they offered.  Does he have some connections at Marquette?  Jamal Cain?

I like his game as well.  Really good upside at the SG position, and plays with some "dog" in him.

As for Mo Bamba, he seems like a longshot to land at UM.  Not sure I would hold out hope for that to happen before offering someone else.

Love the recruiting updates Matt. I think you mentioned that you showed tape of another player to Beilein a couple days ago. I imagine the staff is aware of Pearson as well?

Not sure if you can share, but do they ask you for feedback on any of these players?

Unrelated, but do you have a sense of how the players are responding to the new asst coaches? when I saw that the players attended the Detroit / Milwaukee game, I was thinking that they are missing the spark and coaching from their former coaches.

out for Mo Bamba, does this indicate the staff has a good feeling that he may be coming? Are they worried he may balk if they continue recruiting that spot?

I feel like most fans feel like there's no chance this will happen, but maybe we should be more hopeful
