2017 OT Toryque Bateman puts Michigan in Top 3
I had forgot about him as a prospect but maybe we are showing some interest again if kai-leon herbert flips to another school. His offer list is pretty good, as it includes Miami, Louisville, Tennessee, Va Tech, Wisconsin. He is choosing between Miami, Louisville and Michigan.
He is listed at 6-8, 305 lbs, #68OT per 247 composite.
However, our favorite recruiting service for him is ESPN who has him as a 4* and the #36 OT.

We need as many OL as we can get.

If he has his academic house(which was the rumored issue) in order then he's a great person for them to be looking at as thius cycle draws to a close, we need more numbers on the O-Line and given that we're going to do better with names we have heard before......

lose Hebert
add Filiaga and Becton
I don't know if we would add / take
The above puts us at
Ruiz
Filiaga
Becton
Hall
Stueber
Honigford
we would have room I would suppose
were there also concerns over qualifying? I'm sure someone has more detail

He was another grade issue recruit I think. He's been really high on Michigan for a while.

Was he at our Bama satellite camp?

It looks like Louisville is the clear favorite.
He has visited twice since October started and has another visit lined up.

Lousville is the "clear favorite" because M wouldn't let him commit til he got academics straight.
If that has happened I'm sure with Wilson going elsewhere they'd give him another look.

tackle sure couldn't hurt

I had heard previously that Michigan was probably not going to take him, but that was back before Isaiah Wilson surprised us by picking Georgia. So maybe the staff will be a little more open-minded and try to get back in it with Bateman.

When it comes to recruiting against southern schools, I don't think anything should ever surprise us.
Putting aside his possible academic issues, do you think he merits a scholarship?

He's definitely a Michigan-caliber prospect, IMO. He's not as good as a couple of the other guys we've been pursuing, but he's a plus athlete. He has good feet, but he just needs to refine his technique some. He's not an early-impact guy, but give him a year or two to learn some more about football and I think he could contribute.

I'm not sure adding another OT just for the sake of adding one makes a ton of sense unless you know for sure where the other current commits are slotted to play.
Everyone one of the other line commits mentioned above plays the same position (OT) and issignificantly higher ranked than Bateman, including Becton who's still out there. I would be curious who, if any, are actually being projected to OG where there are current no listed commits. (Assuming Paea still listed as a DT).

Compete in the All Star game? I didn't hear what his injury was.

If I'm an OT, I'd rather play at Michigan where I can run block (fun) and pass block (necessary and good for any NFL aspirations).
If you go to Miami or Louisville you are going to just be standing up and backpedaling a lot.
