2016 MBB Recruiting: 3* Ibi Watson and 4* Amir Coffey

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

To answer guestavo's question the other day - "So what 3* does Beilein get drafted higher than Tyus Battle?" - it appears the first challenger is Ibi Watson, out of Pickerington, OH. Pickerington, of course, is where fellow late blooming, (former) high-school twig Caris LeVert hails from. Watson is 6'4" and allegedly 180 pounds. He recently added an offer from the Hoosiers to go alongside offers from UMass and Dayton.

Also, per Chris Balas on Twitter today, Michigan is taking a look at Amir Coffey, a 4* wing out of the Gopher state. Coffey tore his ACL a little while back, but has still managed to maintain his top 50 ranking on Rivals. Apparently there is pretty significant mutual interest there. Coffey has offers from Arizona, IU, MSU, and Wisconsin, among others. I'm a huge fan of his game. Looks like a future pro.

But wow his film looks great.  I'd actually prefer him as a SG/wing prospect in the class over Battle.  Maybe not as much as Langford, but his film looks great.  I guess the question is if the ACL potentially becomes a larger issue.  Hopefully not.

I agree. I think Langford will end up being a much better college player than Battle and have more of an immediate impact. I think Battle could be a Kevon Looney type - doesn't wow you in college, stays around for a year or two without doing much, and then leaves because his advisors tell him to.

Coffey looks like he has a ton of growth potential, has good size, will probably grow a few more inches, and has a dad who's likely coached him up.

if I was recovering from ACL issues. The strength and muscle the graduates have added in the past could do nothing but help prevent future ACL problems I would think.

With our depth, either of these guys can come in and redshirt. The first guy needs to work on his handle, shot, and vision. He probably needs to work on defense too, as most players do. Also the year would help him get accustomed to the system and build some muscle. The second guy could use the redshirt to make sure he is fully rehabbed from his ACL tear.

I'm still trying to figure out why we wouldn't take a run at Cumberland. Were we just bluffing battle when we brought in the kid for a visit? With Battle out you would think Cumberland is also on the radar. But Sam Webb and Ira have indicated that Michigan has moved on...

Comes down to a point where you have to decide if the kid is really interested or not. I'm sure JB did what he could with Cumberland, but if the interest isn't there on both ends (which after his commitment it doesn't appear to be) we can't afford to waste time on another fly by recruit.

I think it would take a very impressive player to break into the guard rotation from the 2016 class. Battle had a good chance but both of these guys would play limited minutes I would guess.

It might be just me, but both of their shots look to have a very low release point, not something you love to see coming into college

Among the others with offers out to Amir Coffey is Minnesota, where his father, Richard, played collegiately in the late 1980s.

His two older sisters have also played college hoops, neither at Minnesota.
