I thought university officials said they wouldn't ever do a MSU night game considering the potential trouble that all day drinking/tailgating could cause

Yep, Brandon said no MSU due to potential for trouble.  That could change if not Brandon is AD but I somehow doubt it.  It's sort of funny every odd year we will have MSU and OSU on the schedule but neither will be eligible for a night game due to potential for trouble or how late it is in the season (OSU).

Oregon State doesnt move the needle at all.   BYU probably will be better than Northwestern next year assuming that whirling dervish of a QB is healthy and ready to go but BYU is a lot like Utah or Oregon State in that in any year it might be a quality team but not move the needle in terms of attention.  So I think Northwestern is the only choice by process of elimination.

2016 would be Wisconsin (PSU is a candidate)

2017 you are screwed - if not MSU that leaves Rutgers, Cincinnati or Air Force.  So Rutgers it is...or skip it.

2018 would be Wiscy or Nebraska

2019 would be Iowa

If you are really planning ahead - 22=UCLA, 24=Texas, 26=Oklahoma

Either do it every year or do it every other year...not a fan of "welll, we're going to skip it this year, but then we'll do it for 2 years because we play team A and team B, then we'll probably take 2 years off."

I don't see a problem with doing it for MSU. I wouldn't wear the goofy jerseys, but I don't have an issue with MSU being the night game.

OSU should never be the night game (and it can't, by B1G rule, so whatever).

That schedule just reminds me how much Brandon fucked up on the @MSU/@OSU in the same year. That is plain awful.

Your schedule is always going to be unbalanced because of it - and without ND, you have years where you never see a rival. We have THREE main rivals, how can we go full years without getting ONE at home?

Brandon gets blamed for posters and yogurt...which is stupid. Fire Brandon over that scheduling blunder. That is awful.

Brandon didn't make the schedule. It's a very complex process with a lot of schools having preferences.

Our number one priority was Ohio being the last game, and that was achieved.

And while they aren't our primary rivals, there is marquee value in 2016 with Penn State and Nebraska. In 2018, we are loaded with Arkansas, Nebraska, Penn State, and Wisconsin.

Or only partially true.

What you said, is correct...but Brandon DID have the opportunity to get MSU/OSU in different years. It's been well documented that he had that chance and didn't bring it up until it was too late.

2015 - BYU or Northwestern if it has to be a B10 team (but ND wasn't, so there's no "rule") 2016 - Wisconsin obviously 2017 - Cincinnati or MSU -- Rutgers isn't until late October. May need to roll the dice on MSU, but Cincy would be the week after the Florida game in Jerryworld so that would make 2 WOW experiences back to back (ducks) 2018 - Nebraska 2019 -Iowa 2020 - Virginia Tech 2021- Washington 2022 - UCLA 2023 - probably back to a B1G team such as Virginia or UNC LOL 2024 - Texas 2025 - B10 North rival University of Toronto 2026 - Oklahoma

Looking at the 2015 schedule, the only one that really stands out as a possibility to me - and I could be off - is Northwestern just because of the time of year and the fact that it isn't MSU. I don't know that they would give this treatment to BYU or Oregon State necessarily because those are rivalries like Michigan-ND was (feels odd to say "was" there) and the next home games after early October don't come until November.

Things line up fairly well except for 2017 when you almost have to make it MSU. There would be a run of getting through the B1G rivals, beginning this year with PSU. We'd play either an East rival (PSU, MSU) or a West rival we don't play much anymore (exception being Northwestern next year because we've been playing them frequently in past years, but then comes Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa). Then after that stretch, we begin scheduling the VT, Washington, UCLA, Texas and Oklahoma games in. Works out good. I love these UTL games. Great setting last night.

in ann arbor after the 2010 msu game??? if you were then you know why its a horrible idea to have state fans in your city after dark... if you weren't then I suggest you look up the articles, especially the one about the Michigan fan that beat pretty badly by an msu fan for no reason...

My wife's grandfather had a heart attack at the Wisconsin game in 2008. He ended up being okay as the staff in place did a great job getting him to the hospital. There was some yelling between two fans (in the ER) and we were shocked to see people fighting in an emergency room. The nurse said that was nothing really, when Ohio State is in Ann Arbor they have to divide the emergency room by school. No OSU for sure and I would put Sparty in that mix too. Northwestern would be my pick just because we've played them close recently.

I'm tempted to say MSU, but I'm afraid that if we lost, that roving packs of mindless Spartans would loot and pillage our beloved Ann Arbor. There's likely not enough jail cells for all of them in all of Washtenaw county.

We would never schedule MSU at night. Probably wouldn't want to give them that exposure. Playing them at night would mean admitting they are relevant. This school is way to arrogant to admit they are relevant.

Some of you will believe anything this AD tells you.

As others have said, due to school policy, as well as some common sense, unfortunately MSU and OSU are out of the mix for the night game.

It's clear that the early trend for UTL games is that they are huge advantages for Michigan--home field advantage "plus."  It's an advantage in beating whoever we play in that game, plus an advantage for visiting recruits.

If it's between Oregon State, BYU, or Northwestern, I think ultimately it comes down to BYU.

My guess is that BYU as more of a national draw than Oregon State, and I think their record has been somewhat better than Oregon State over the past 2-4 years.  For recruiting purposes, BYU also has a draw of Mormon athletes (kind of the Mormon version of Notre Dame football I suppose) and a particular draw from the Polynesian community.  There's some pretty solid recruits that come out of both those communities.  So, you may get some additional extra eyeballs checking out the game from the West Coast, which may help with our national recruiting profile (so long as we start getting our act together and winning generally).  For those reasons I'd say BYU > Oregon State.

As for Northwestern---they are in the Big Ten West division, so they don't factor nearly as much in terms of us playing for a slot in the Big Ten Championship game.  Plus I don't think we typically are competing with Northwestern for recruiting purposes.  We already have a solid enough presence recruiting-wise in Illinois and Chicagoland in particular.  Plus Northwestern may end up being even more of a tire-fire than Michigan is next year, so I don't feel like we'd need the intimidation factor/night game advantage as much to actually win the game.

Tl;DR version:  BYU > Oregon State > Northwestern

2015- BYU (sept. 26) nationally relevent, solid team, no brainerm

2016- wiconson (oct. 1)

2017- skip.. no point in forcing a night game. seems like we have somethng special going with the UTL, dont want to taint it with a night game against air force

2018- arkansas (sept. 1) great way to kick off season. night game against nationally relevant opponent

2019- iowa.. unless we schedule a more relevant game, still have a few open slots
