Not MSU. That is asking for trouble.
I would guess Northwestern.

I wouldn't want the Sparty fan base here for a night game. BYU brings some marquee value.

Yeah, because there's no intense rivalries in SEC night games.

Yep, Brandon said no MSU due to potential for trouble. That could change if not Brandon is AD but I somehow doubt it. It's sort of funny every odd year we will have MSU and OSU on the schedule but neither will be eligible for a night game due to potential for trouble or how late it is in the season (OSU).
Oregon State doesnt move the needle at all. BYU probably will be better than Northwestern next year assuming that whirling dervish of a QB is healthy and ready to go but BYU is a lot like Utah or Oregon State in that in any year it might be a quality team but not move the needle in terms of attention. So I think Northwestern is the only choice by process of elimination.
2016 would be Wisconsin (PSU is a candidate)
2017 you are screwed - if not MSU that leaves Rutgers, Cincinnati or Air Force. So Rutgers it is...or skip it.
2018 would be Wiscy or Nebraska
2019 would be Iowa
If you are really planning ahead - 22=UCLA, 24=Texas, 26=Oklahoma
October 12th, 2014 at 5:52 AM ^
Air Force night game could be cool as shit. High level fly over with the after burners
October 12th, 2014 at 7:39 AM ^
Either do it every year or do it every other year...not a fan of "welll, we're going to skip it this year, but then we'll do it for 2 years because we play team A and team B, then we'll probably take 2 years off."
I don't see a problem with doing it for MSU. I wouldn't wear the goofy jerseys, but I don't have an issue with MSU being the night game.
OSU should never be the night game (and it can't, by B1G rule, so whatever).
That schedule just reminds me how much Brandon fucked up on the @MSU/@OSU in the same year. That is plain awful.
Your schedule is always going to be unbalanced because of it - and without ND, you have years where you never see a rival. We have THREE main rivals, how can we go full years without getting ONE at home?
Brandon gets blamed for posters and yogurt...which is stupid. Fire Brandon over that scheduling blunder. That is awful.
October 12th, 2014 at 7:54 AM ^
Brandon didn't make the schedule. It's a very complex process with a lot of schools having preferences.
Our number one priority was Ohio being the last game, and that was achieved.
And while they aren't our primary rivals, there is marquee value in 2016 with Penn State and Nebraska. In 2018, we are loaded with Arkansas, Nebraska, Penn State, and Wisconsin.
October 12th, 2014 at 12:12 PM ^
Or only partially true.
What you said, is correct...but Brandon DID have the opportunity to get MSU/OSU in different years. It's been well documented that he had that chance and didn't bring it up until it was too late.
October 12th, 2014 at 6:58 PM ^
Any chance you can direct me to that?
October 12th, 2014 at 10:14 AM ^
A rival is an opponent you play on at least a semi-regular basis. Looking at who is scheduled for the next 15 years I don't see much room for adding ND on the schedule should they decide they would again sully themselves by playing Michigan. Therefore ND is no longer a rival.

Michigan is 3-0 Under The Lights. With that kind of track record they should schedule all their games under the lights.
October 12th, 2014 at 7:57 AM ^
Looking at the 2015 schedule, the only one that really stands out as a possibility to me - and I could be off - is Northwestern just because of the time of year and the fact that it isn't MSU. I don't know that they would give this treatment to BYU or Oregon State necessarily because those are rivalries like Michigan-ND was (feels odd to say "was" there) and the next home games after early October don't come until November.

It will be early in the season so nicer weather. That will be more enjoyable to watch. Plus BYU is a good team and should be a great game.
October 12th, 2014 at 10:21 AM ^
because unlike the others, BYU does have some national cachet.

From my experience are the most polite, nice, and well-manered in all the country. May have something to do with no-alcohol, but i think they'd be nice anyways

Oregon State, BYU, and Rutgers
October 12th, 2014 at 9:49 AM ^
No way can it be MSU. We won't have the QB in place to take them on in a nationally televised night game. It has the potential for disaster...

MSU fans are dicks. Both sides drinking all day long is a recipe for disaster. I don't need a statement from Dave Brandon to see how obvious it is that it would go badly
October 12th, 2014 at 3:46 PM ^
I was at the 2006,2008, and 2012 MSU game. Both sides drink all day anyway. Even if you made it a 3:30 start people still drink after the game and act stupid. Game time is irrelevant.

As others have said, due to school policy, as well as some common sense, unfortunately MSU and OSU are out of the mix for the night game.
It's clear that the early trend for UTL games is that they are huge advantages for Michigan--home field advantage "plus." It's an advantage in beating whoever we play in that game, plus an advantage for visiting recruits.
If it's between Oregon State, BYU, or Northwestern, I think ultimately it comes down to BYU.
My guess is that BYU as more of a national draw than Oregon State, and I think their record has been somewhat better than Oregon State over the past 2-4 years. For recruiting purposes, BYU also has a draw of Mormon athletes (kind of the Mormon version of Notre Dame football I suppose) and a particular draw from the Polynesian community. There's some pretty solid recruits that come out of both those communities. So, you may get some additional extra eyeballs checking out the game from the West Coast, which may help with our national recruiting profile (so long as we start getting our act together and winning generally). For those reasons I'd say BYU > Oregon State.
As for Northwestern---they are in the Big Ten West division, so they don't factor nearly as much in terms of us playing for a slot in the Big Ten Championship game. Plus I don't think we typically are competing with Northwestern for recruiting purposes. We already have a solid enough presence recruiting-wise in Illinois and Chicagoland in particular. Plus Northwestern may end up being even more of a tire-fire than Michigan is next year, so I don't feel like we'd need the intimidation factor/night game advantage as much to actually win the game.
Tl;DR version: BYU > Oregon State > Northwestern
October 12th, 2014 at 4:18 PM ^
Well if it's true that the AD is worried about drunken morons (I say deal with it) then BYU is a lock. Their students aren't allowed to drink are they?

2015- BYU (sept. 26) nationally relevent, solid team, no brainerm
2016- wiconson (oct. 1)
2017- skip.. no point in forcing a night game. seems like we have somethng special going with the UTL, dont want to taint it with a night game against air force
2018- arkansas (sept. 1) great way to kick off season. night game against nationally relevant opponent
2019- iowa.. unless we schedule a more relevant game, still have a few open slots
