2015 MBB Recruiting: 2015 WI SG Brevin Pritzl to visit this weekend

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Per multiple outlets, 6'3" shooting guard Brevin Pritzl is set to visit this weekend. Pritzl lit things up at Spiece (big deal AAU tournament for player evaluations), dropping 37 and 41 points in successive games.

He currently has offers from a few smaller Wisconsin-area DI schools and a few MAC programs, but reports new interest from some B1G programs including Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Minnesota.

Should be interesting to see what happens with an offer still out to Jalen Coleman. The coaching staff's push to get an immediate visit after contacting him for the first time only days ago seems to hint that an offer may follow (quite unlike the way the staff wasn't in a rush to get McQuaid on campus).

EDIT: Also, per one commenter on another site, cue the "Pritzl's Pretzels" costumes if he ends up here.

He's probably unranked somewhere, but the 247 Composite has him at #174 overall in his class. Offers from Xavier and Creighton and some crystal balls to Wisconsin, Michigan, and Drake.

Both Scout and Rivals have him as a 3-star. The 247 rankings (updated yesterday [not the consensus rankings]) have him as #70 in the country and a 4-star.

This item says he plans to visit Marquette next week and has gotten recent interest from Texas, North Carolina, Indiana, and North Carolina State, among others.

EDIT: Here's a good article on Pritzl from yesterday. He says he's in no rush to make a decision and "plans to finish out the summer before getting too serious about his recruitment."

Isn't this exactly the line of thinking that MSU has for football recruiting and we give them a hard time for?  We keep expecting MSU's run to end as we accumulate higher-ranked classes, but in basketball we're going to keep dominating with lower-ranked recruits?

I trust Beilein as much as everyone, but even this very blog was giddy after we made the national championship game about how that was going to boost recruiting, and all of the top recruits would want to come here.  So far, we haven't seen that.  Which class is supposed to see the fruits of our recent success?

Just calling it like I see it my man. You can't expect to develop 3 star recruits into NBA first round picks year in and year out. We need to start capitalizing on this NBA success w/ quality recruits. I think what I'm saying is reasonable. We've always been able to attract blue chip basketball talent at Michigan and there's no reason why we should be settling for anything less...

A couple things:

First of all, I said they weren't highly ranked when they committed. Beilein's strength has been landing guys before they blow up, whether that be while they're still in High School or when they get to Michigan. And if you can pull it off, it's actually the most efficient way to do things. You get high caliber players without having the equivalent level of competition for them. And most of these guys end up 4 or 5 stars before they get to Michigan anyway!

And second of all, just because Michigan had deep runs in the tournament 2 years in a row, the traditional basketball powerhouses don't just go away. Programs like Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Kansas, Ohio State, UCLA, and UConn don't just go away because they have one bad tournament. They're going to gobble up the majority of the 5 stars year after year. So yes, I'm fine with Michigan pulling in underrated players that blow up, it's the best way to succeed.

I've been following Michigan basketball for 4 decades now and know far more about this game than you do. There is no substitute for talent. if you ever want to see Michigan become the basketball powerhouse that we were in the '80's and '90's then we have to start landing blue chip quality recruits. We've been gloating for over a year about all the recruiting success we're going to have now that we made a Final Four run and follow up Elite Eight appearance. At some point we have to expect better quality talent. Trey, THJ, and Stauskas are the exception and not the rule. If you can't see that you are delusional.

I would rather not see us be the basketball 'powerhouse' that we were in the 90s that led to NCAA probation...

I would prefer to see us keep Beilien, keep winning, and do well for ourselves...

I have a weak stomach for the summer leagues, bag men, and one and dones that come with the percieved 'top players'.  I would much rather farm the 50-100 ranked guys who will stick around and outperform the one and dones...

love,

jdon

ps. I don't give a fuck how long you have been around.

if you are referring to 'smotrctz's lobsters', then that was so ridiculous.... gives our rivals something to make fun of, especially when smotrycyz left and whined.

I'm more interested in the non-high ranked guys that come here for Basketball.

Sparty football fans right now.  And no, I am not saying the programs are equal as our hoops program has way more a tradition of winning that Sparty football.  But we make the exact same arguments that we used to mock Sparty football fans for making.

UMHoops reported that another top 100 player in the 2015 class now being pursued by Michigan is Esa Ahmad, a 6-7 forward from Shaker Heights, Ohio. He plays on the same AAU team Trey Burke played on. He has tentative plans to visit Michigan in the next couple of weeks.

If he's a legit 6'7" ... wow. He has fantastic handles for a guy that size. I'd love to add him to the 2015 class. He's a top 100 guy, but he's blowing up as well right now and it's easy to see why.

He's also an AAU teammate of Jalen Coleman.  His game reminds me of LaQuinton Ross when he was coming out of high school.  Ross had a bit more of a low post game but their style of play is very similar.  OSU will be tough to beat for his services.

Sam Webb described him yesterday as a guy who can shoot very well but whose handle isn't great.  Sam also thinks he's probably closer to his athletic potential right now than Stauskas or LeVert were when they came on board.

Yeah he doesn't really seem to fit the mold for the type of kid Beilein has brought in the last few years.  UM has put an emphasis on kids that can play multiple positions and seem to really value length.  This kid is one of the best shooters in the 2015 class but appears to be closer to Vogrich/Douglass than Stauskas/Irvin.

Latest report reveals that Pritzl grew up a UNC fan:

"I grew up a North Carolina fan when I was young, and I have a UNC basketball in my room right now, so I guess you could say that hearing from the Tar Heels is a big deal," he said.

The Tar Heels are planning to watch him in the summer when they get a chance to do some more evaluations. And his coach thinks the opposition is now starting to figure out how good Pritzl is and they are designing ways to stop him.
