2015 4* RB Jordan Stevenson in contact with Michigan after denied entry by WI

Submitted by the real hail_yes on

This is a pretty odd story given our very high perception of the academic admission standards at Michigan, but hey, I'd take a highly prized RB that is also visiting Nebraska, Miami and Alabama

He did not get denied admission to Wisconsin due to poor grades. His admission was denied because of a miscommunication between him and Wisconsin. He was denied on account of not having the correct credits (he had enough but not the right ones) which wiscy never communicated with him until now. What likely happened is he took a social studies course the counted as a credit in HS but Wiscy considered it an elective credit, thus no admittance.

How many times have they done this in the last few years? Enough to drive away a great coach from a great school and a great program apparently

If I was Alvarez, I'd be screaming for the football program and the admissions department to figure out the apparent chasm between them

Given that this is not the first time something like this has happened at Wisconsin, why in the world does Wisconsin not have someone within the AD's office or football program dedicated to communicating with players to ensure this sort of thing doesn't happen?

WI has lost multiple players the last few years due to this and I think are going to be 2nd in the conference in terms of what is required after Northwestern.   Also a cited reason for Andersen leaving and an uncited reason Big Bert left before him.  I know STAEE picked up a kid who couldnt get into WI 2 years ago (Craig Evans) - who ironically is apparently having academic problems at Staee as well.

Can Michigan fit him in if he wants to come here and he gets thru Admissions?  Sounds like a low center of gravity inside runner though.  Can always use a guy who can get first downs.

Would he be eligible this season? I say come on down. We have absolutely no hierarchy at RB in my mind right now. One more name in the pool could make a real difference.

Has getting into college become this complicated, or did GVSU feed me a line of BS when they said they had the second highest admission standards in the state?

Someone told me (admittedly a GVSU student) that GVSU's acceptance rate was lower than MSU's but a quick googling says MSU is at 66% and GVSU at 82% so that isn't right.

I suspect GVSU found a metric where they appear more selective than MSU and really lean on that

GVSU is actually the third best public college in Michigan. 65% graduation rate is higher than both Western and Central, trailing only MSU 79% and UM 91%. I'm not entirely sure why, but I know a few kids that chose GVSU over State. Super solid grad school placements. I think it must be a big draw for sheltered but bright Grand Rapids kids who don't want to be far from home? It's rise has been pretty dramatic.

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth I attended an accredited Michigan high school. I took classes appropriate for someone who planned to go to college. When I graduated I met all the various requirements to get into every college to which I applied (including three ivies). I was accepted to every school I applied to, but since Michigan was in the top three of anything I was interested in studying it was a financial no brainer once I was accepted there.

What the hell has happened to our high schools that a student with the intention of attending college can graduate with solid grades and not meet the minimum requirements to go anywhere? Seriously, what's going on? Wisconsin is a good school and all, but it is still a state institution. Something is broken.

More electives and less math and science requirements. Some high schools only require up to Algebra 1 and Biology to graduate. If a student doesn't want to take the remaining college prep classes they don't have to. I'm guessing Stevenson just had a shitty academic counselor.

I like Stevenson's game, but if we took him (and I doubt we will), we would certainly have a lot of scholarships tied up in the offensive backfield. We have all the running backs currently on the roster (zero of whom are seniors), three guys committed for 2016, a bunch of quarterbacks on the roster, and two more quarterbacks coming in 2016.

By all means talk to him, as Wiscy has had enough weird admissions issues to make me wonder if it is just them with the problem and not the athletes. But this might be a stay away unless more comes out to explain why he was denied admissions a month before the season starts.
