2014 Orlando Brown to visit this summer

Submitted by Jmilan on

Title basically says it all. The link is behind a paywall at 247, but I figured since it is a bit of a slow day besides Cravens announcing that this would be some good news and Michigan relevant. Also sorry if this has already been brought up, but I googled it and it didn't pop up on here and this is also my first post ever.

For anyone that lifts weights, BMI is a horrible metric.  I'm not saying that a 376 pound guy is not obese, but BMI is the wrong metric by which to measure a football player.  For a 6'0" guy, anything above 185 lbs is considered overweight, but for a 6' tall DB, if he's not at least 185 lbs, he's pretty small, and will likely struggle in run support.

BMI really doesn't apply to guys like this (indeed BMI doesn't work particularly well for men in general).

For example, I have Mike Martin's measurables at the combine at 6'1" and 306 lbs.  That gives him a BMI of 40.4.  Would you like to tell Mr. Martin that he's obese and needs to drop about a 100 pounds, or should I?

I'd prefer if you would.

Regardless, 376 lbs is a lot of weight for a HS Junior.  I'm sure he is pretty strong, but odds are a lot of that is bad weight.  If he can get down to about 340 before college, I think he'd have a lot more success and possibly be able to play early.

I don't completely buy the hype either. I think he might be too big too early. Judging by his measurables and camp film, I forsee him having trouble with the speed rush, pad level and keeping his weight under control. 6'9" is elite size for a tackle, obviously, but his 376 lbs. is not nearly all good. This isn't a fair comparison considering Brown's age, but Zach Banner (#2 OT 2012) also is 6'9" and has a listed weight of 310. Comparisons to LTT seem appropriate. He will be great but needs polishing especially in the footwork department.

I could see him at 380ish if he was already in school and in a college weight program. but 380 as a Sophmore about to start his junior year...thats alot of mt.dew and bigmacs there......

thats said I think pipkins was up to 350 at one point last year so there is hope, and hopefully coaches tell him he has a ton of potential but he needs to start eating right and get his weight right sooner than later.

He has to be strong to display any kind of athleticism while being that big. I wonder if he is getting attention because of his bloodlines or if he really has potential. Im guessing he has talent otherwise Im sure the coaches would not bother.

growing... That kid is going to be 6'11" and 390bills. Might be better suited for WWE or making movies. Im sure basketball may also be an option....
