2014 Glenville Safety Erick Smith taking an official visit to Michigan

Submitted by MaizenBlue93 on

Smith was originally going to commit to his school of choice Saturday at the Army All American Game. Long considered to be a Buckeye lean. Would be huge if true, with the big need at safety."Glenville four-star DB Erick Smith says he wants to take officials to Michigan & Spartans. Won't announce at Army" -Steve Wiltfong.

As a non-24/7 user, those crystal balls sure seem to be pretty volatile.  Maybe, though, that's an accurate reflection of trying to divine a 16-18 year old's thought process for a major decision with that many variables.

To the post, that would be great news to get a very good safety!

a rape ewok won't make it very far in a capitalist society, but in socialism we have our own little niche...

They want(ed) to play together, but I don't think OSU has room for both. I've kind of thought that one would end up at OSU but the other one wouldn't, and since Lattimore is the better prospect, he's probably more likely to get the spot.

The staff at OSU certainly appears to feel that there is room for both. They even offered a backup at S as a contingency in case Smith heads somewhere else. I think the staff has had these two pencilled in as DB commits since the beginning, and at least as far as anyone outside the program knows, they are both being pursued as strongly as they have been at any point.

Probably not. First of all, we haven't offered him. And secondly, he's got plenty of other options who have been on him longer. Normally, you have to grab low-hanging fruit this late in the process. He's not really that type.

Anybody heard the rumor that they are just messing around throwing bs info out just to create "drama"?

Lattimore allegedly had Kentucky writers thinking they were silent commits to UK just for the hell of it, per Twitter.

There was an OSU fan that started a rumor that all 3 Glenville kids called UK to commit, and UK sites ran with it. Marcelys Jones seems to have UK and OSU staffs thinking he's enrolling mmediately after the Army game. Smith now wants to visit the Michigan schools out of the blue and Lattimore is drumming up publicity on twitter about his commitment, which is presumably still being held on Saturday. Most people just chalk it up to Glenville being Glenville, but I wouldn't rule out these guys wanting to buck the OSU trend, or perhaps there is a numbers crunch with the possible (probable?) flip of Mike Gesicki from PSU.

getting pressure from Glenville folks to delay so OSU gets more time? Do you think the Glenville coaches have warmed a little to UM or cooled a little to OSU with the staff changes post RR and Tressel? These pipeline schools (regardless for which Univ) are pipelines largely because the HS coaches and admin set up everything to favor the preferred Univ. Explicit and implicit support as much to keep scholarship offers flowing for their kids.

For the most part, Ted Ginn Sr. Doesn't push his guys towards OSU, they just tend to follow their older peers. As a former public school kid in NE Ohio, most Cleveland/Akron kids grow up wanting to go to OSU (with the exception of the Catholic schools where ND has pull). I can't say for sure, but Coach Ginn just wants to see his guys succeed and I'd say, especially without Tressell, he isn't pushing them to play at OSU. Maybe other coaches/advisors, but there was talk earlier in the year of Lattimore and Smith not responding well to assumptions that they would automatically go to OSU.

Gesicki was 50/50 Buckeye/Penn State, and BOB was his lead recruiter. Buckeyes still don't have a TE in this class. If there was an odd man out in their number crunch, it would be Smith. This feels like they told him his spot isn't guaranteed anymore with Gesicki back in play.

On the good side of this equation, they could join up with Peppers & Watson to become a fearsome force.  Truly a backfield that I would want to see every week that I could.  On the bad side of this equation, using social media to manipulate (coaches, programs, etc) doesn't speak well for the person(s) behind it.  If would happen to be the case I don't think they will work well with any system that typically doesn't tolerate public laundry airing.  I hope its the first.  An Urbz bumble we could capitalize on would make me cackle with glee at this particular time.
