I do this thread every year. I actually really like the stuff they've got this year.
The Nussmeier visor^
I usually don't mind the Adidas stuff but most of this is hot garbage.
Agreed. It is not good when my favorite warmup (white) is not one of the main colors. And those blue shorts? Without reading any other comment on the thread my thoughts of lol will be echo'd I'm sure. And some of those hats are ...cheesy.
looks like the stuff you see in a random souvenir shop
Not a fan of the tops but some of the other stuff I could dig.
the polo's are just ok. Not a fan of the maize stripe across the back and 2/3 of the sleeves.
I think I could hire my 17-year old son to produce better product than this. I have pretty much refrained from the Adidas/Nike/etc. argument, but this is an awful selection of gear.
I feel no urge or impulse to purchase any of these items. Any of them.
sorry. Hammered drunk.
Rule 76 no excuses play like a champion.
A couple nice pieces, but IMO mostly garbage designs.
junk. Nike, please come back..
The white pullover is nice, but the rest is complete shit. It's like their trying to devalue the brand. I can buy better look stuff at Meijer.
Maybe exaggerating a little bit, but those hats are fucking terrible.
Time to pull the cord... Nike, Under Armour, whomever... Just make the switch.
Those are some of the worst hats I have ever seen.
Shane Morris SnapBack as well as the Nuss visor
1,2,3, and 5 are hideous.
I know we all have our own unique tastes but I feel like most of this is standard adidas trash. I keep trying to give adidas a chance but ever year the product seems to become more and more generic. Cookie-cutter products. The polos look okay. The white pullover is nice. The hats and visors are terrible. Look like something you could find screen printed at a shop in the middle of a mall, the good, the bad, the ugly.
I apologize in advance if you feel different or indifferent but I think the adidas product (among many factors) contributes to use being held back. Adidas has cornered a solid portion of the market (football products and merchandise) here in the state of Michigan, but I think it is really driven of the University of Michigan. Kids do not care for their gear as much as say, Nike and UA. Get rid of Adidas and recruits will take notice, even if we do not do anything crazy with uniformz. (Which I hope we never touch the home unis)
Obligatory monthly rant about Michigan merchandise and adidas inferiority over.
Tonight was a Friday for me...
Yeah, because recruiting is the problem. C'mon, man!
Recruiting has not been a major concern. Call me crazy. Call me conceded. I've coached HS football now for six seasons. I hear the conversations that take place about gear. I see the trends come and go. I remember when mid socks were still something only my father wore.
The truth of the matter is that no, recruiting has not been bad. In fact it has been pretty good. But we have missed out on plenty of big name recruits. Yes I know, I am crazy to think a small factor in these decisions might actually have something to do with the gear the players wear and not just the sub-par play on the field that has become our standard and seemingly calling card. Let's just say Adidas is not helping us.
When these guys are making their decisions, for the most part their parents are saying go for academics, the prestige, etc while the recruit and the recruits friends are saying go for the campus life, the path to the NFL, and the statement/fame. To me, and my hunch would be for many recruits, the Adidas gear is simply not a +1 when making that difficult decision where to spend the next four years. The inverse, say nike or UA, would only be considered a positive and a added benefit.
So to readdress the statement, no recruiting has not been a major concern in recent years under Hoke & Co. However, I would bet if the current players were polled the majority would say they would prefer Nike. It's far and away the most popular brand with the 14-25 year old
Demographic. Raptor claw marks may have been cool in 1995-1996 but that isn't helping our cause now. I'm sure it's much more of a non-factor than an actual factor but if we simply dropped Adidas after the contract we wouldn't have to worry about it at all. I don't care how much they offer.
Compared to last year's, this batch is MUCH better. Last year really made me question adidas.
Perhaps I'm so defensive of adidas because of how much I've invested in their gear. Not just the Michigan gear, but every pair of shoes/socks/boxers/shorts/athletic wear since the change I have bought has been adidas. More days of the week than not, every article of clothing on my body is adidas-made. No days go by where I don't wear something made by them. Zero. Hell, even when I played football in junior high when the change happened, I made sure to get adidas cleats & helmet visor.
The last Nike thing I bought of any kind was a #86 jersey that was on sale before the switch to adidas became official in 2008 with the first day of fall camp.
Although, I do genuinely like the stuff this year like the polos and the white pullover. The second hat I like, the others not so much. Hell, I didn't even notice until now that I'm wearing the Maize shorts.
that i would like to buy (if i had any money). which is probabyl 2 or 3 more than typical years. i'll agree with you.
that i would like to buy (if i had any money). which is probabyl 2 or 3 more than typical years. i'll agree with you.
Last years merchandise was terrible too. Just like in NBA Jam, two terrible terrible years in a row "we are heating up", after a third consecutive year of trash next season maybe we will be "on fire!"
I know we can't get out of the contract until '16 (or whenever), but this product is trash. Please do not renew this contract. Please!
I recognize I'm being dickish, but you didn't "invest" in Adidas—you spent money on it. None of it will ever appreciate in value.
Given what this stuff looks like, it's a depreciating asset even before it's sold. Fugly.
I just looked at your 2013 link and I like about half the stuff that year versus uhh 1.5 items of 2014. The grey long sleeve T, the white pullover, and both polos look better in 2013. And there is actually a hat that while still a bit loud doesn't scream Meijer in the 2013 group. The maize hooded sweatshirt of 2013 is also do-able. All the stuff from 2013 that sucks focuses on things where the block M is 2/3rds of the real estate on the front.
Almost none of this 2014 stuff is decent.
I miss nike...
I miss nice Michigan stuff...
Are they serious with those hats?
I wouldn't wear any of those hats if someone gave them to me.
The only two things I care at all for are the white pull-over and the 2014 Student T (which my daughter already got for me for Father's Day). The rest of it is feces.
Reviews and approves? Brandon? This stuff is embarrassing!
I was going to say I must be old because those hats are hideous.
I honestly wouldn't wear any of that. Much less buy it.
the guy at the ann arbor sports memorabilia store on liberty just bought a collection of...i think he said 500 vintage hats. he'll give you a great deal if you buy 4 or 5. i'm slowly building up my collection...
Yes! That shop is where I could spend days. It's all vintage Michigan stuff. Programs, glasses, footballs, buttons, pennants, photos, tickets. I actually bought one of the original wood slabs of seats from Michigan Stadium from him. Still on the metal it was nailed into the concrete with.
i've gradually amassed a respectable amount of vintage michigan memorabilia.
Between my third drawer of my dresser and the stuff hanging in the back of my closet I have amassed quite a collection of vintage gear as well.
The trick is to NEVER throw anything out. And this is DEFINITELY has station gear. Ohio gas station gear-it's horrible.
The only decade I was alive where clothing was interesting was the 90s, and the clothes I owned then were kid sized. Maybe by the time I'm your age everyone will be wearing the same three outfits and all the Adidas stuff made now will look amazing in comparison.
Even the shorts are ugly.
I like the white pullover, they have it in blue as well.
I thought we were recruiting pretty well.
I understand some people don't really care who sponsors the teams, but I don't understand how anyone can look at this shit and say they like it better than what Nike produces.
I see tons of Nike gear made for Ohio State. It's a HUGE upgrade to anything Adidas has ever made for UM. Nike understands how to make an attractive shirt-Adidas is clearly trying its best to lose all of its current contracts with the crap it's producing. Nike makes seriously good looking apparel. Adidas needs to stick to soccer or something
Honestly, the majority of this stuff looks like it was designed by 6th graders and should be sold at gas stations.
Ha gas station apparel is exactly what I thought of when I saw this.
I really don't understand why it is so difficult for Adidas to create a simple, visually pleasing design that would appeal to most fans. Instead, everything has to be lined, striped, checkered, meshed, piped, camouflaged, or whatever the hell that clawed pattern is supposed to be. Christ, hiring an intern with one year of art coursework would fix most of these problems instantly. Those maize shorts in particular are unbelievably bad.
All of the plain stuff exists already. Do you want them to include it in each and every press release?
if they put the exact same simple Michigan gear up at every press release, and moved this stuff down to the kids collection, the collective fan base would be praising Adidas.
I thought you couldn't alter the M in any way.
The hats need to be lit on fire. Even if the designs were reasonable, they would fall apart after one season. The one I am wearing right now is proof - had to buy a new one by XMas. Anyone but Adidas...
I think Michigan should be really innovative and have Goodwill start producing our apparel for next season.
Someone mentioned this above and I tend to agree - the white pullover is probably the only thing in this sampling that even approaches wearable, in my opinion, leaving the other stuff in a category of things where I would probably just cringe and walk away - especially the hats....good lord. My only guess is that Adidas really is not aiming for the MGoBlog end of the market, if you will, but even at that, I really do not understand what is so difficult about creating something that does not look overdone or overdesigned.
Black hat looks awesome
But yeah, even their most simple designs just appear aesthetically more pleasing. No clutter, weird lighting bolts, and the template has changed since 2012.
Hats look good but I just don't like Under Armour. When I think of UA, I feel like its a brand for fitness buffs and high school football. Say what you will about Adidas but its a world famous brand. I was in Frankfurt recently and saw Michigan adidas gear (hats and #3 basketball jersey) at one of the sports stores.
Michigan jerseys selling in Frankfurt? Sounds like a good start.
a walmart catalog reprint?
Ohio St. & MSU are light years ahead of this hot steaming pile of sh** on & off the field/court. Make the switch, Davey Boy! Just Do It.
The hats, excluding the visor....ARE BRUTAL.
Just thought the same thing. They are all really lame.
$50 says that this program really turns around when we go back to Nike.
U-G-L-Y. They ain't got no alibi
I thought the goal was to actually sell merchandise. This stuff is butt-ugly. PLEASE bring Nike back.
I know this has been talked about over and over. How long does Michigan have until the contract with Adidas is over?
runs through 2016-2017 school year. Dave Brandon has already said Michigan intends to honor the contract.
Michigan is currently Adidas's #1 revenue, they will likely bid the next contract even higher. In short don't expect Nike to walk in and top the Adidas contract.
Adidas needs Michigan more than Nike does.
Are pretty terrible.i actually like a couple over coats or whatever they are, and I like the Bo shirt.
What's up with the T Rex slash on the hats? Poor effort this year from Adidas. These suck
I blew it, not making it down to the M-Den for last years merchandise sale. I can't agree more with the my fellow Mgo blogger who said those hats were the worst he has seen. The round cap is plain ugly. I will be steam cleaning my hats and wearing them again this year.
I feel bad for our coaching staff. They actually have to WEAR this shit. In public. On TV!
The second pic, the "1/4 zipper" is a big trend right now. I don't think Hoke will be rocking one of those though.
What's with the single stripe on the back of the shirts? Seems oddly placed
By the end I was expecting to see this:
but then remembered that it is not 1992 and this is the Adidas line.
Looks like there's more to come...
Made the mistake of clicking. Tasting breakfast again.
Yikes. That hoodie looks like something Andre Agassi would have worn circa 1992.
Are we being trolled?
Even Gary Moeller thinks these look horrible
Great post - at least he's got the hat right.
Adidas always seems to have a few things that are complete garbage and then a few things that would be good but for one adidas throwing in one extra, completely unnecessary element. Like the shirts with the stripe on the sleeves that goes around the back. Why?
Less is more. The general consensus I see here is that the pullovers are okay. They are the simplest design with the fewest unnecessary touches. The beauty of our uniforms has been in simple design well executed. It's why Penn and Alabama also have iconic uniforms. This, like the alt jerseys the last few years, are going in the wrong direction, IMHO. But what do I know? I'm just an attorney with a minimalist aesthetic.
Why cant we breach this shit contract again? Makes me want to start a clothing company if this is the competition.
This generally looks like what I always considered the 'knock off' stuff you can find at Meijer. Poor form
I like that crewneck sweater with the maize stripe accross the back but the rest is terrible, especially the hats. Yikes.
Doesn't the buck stop with DB on this? Did he give Addidas carte blanche for whatever they want to design? Apparel is a significant component of the brand. The AD should have veto power over shit like this (I would hope he didn't have input, although in general, he shoud).
What's worse - that DB allows Addidas to produce this shit unchecked, or that he approves it?
I am not anti-DB by default, but is he not ultimately responsible for the apparel line?
No. DB does not spend his time approving what clothes Adidas sells to fans. Uniforms yes, everything else no. Also, the Adidas contract predates him.
I think this thought is a good sign your hatred for DB has gone to far and you are now trying to blame everything on him. That said, if they renew the Adidas contract, you can rip him all you want. I don't care whet they offer, it's not worth it.
OK, Mr. Thought Police. I get the impression that if DB were black, you'd have called me a racist. You seem a bit narrow in the mind.
I buy Champion at Moe's with simple block lettering. Unpretentious, solid, no-nonsense, unadorned, classic, traditional, timeless.
If you think it's boring, fine, but it doesn't look like it came from a Meijer gas station.
I can't up vote because I'm on my phone, but I am with you 100 percent.
Just my, like, opinion but do not like.
The sweater with the back stripe is alright I guess, but the hats are all designed for 15 year old kids living in 2012.
I like nothing except the yellow shorts
The 1/4 zip is pretty nice, the hats are all too much for my taste
You've got two classic colors that look great together. Why make everything all cluttered and grafix-ish like it came off the clearance rack at Kohls? My 1980's trapper keeper just called, it wants its general level of tackiness back.
Did you see those shorts???!!!
Those are a major step back from last years and even the first two years of the adidas polos. A lot of the adidas stuff is ok but when they try and get creative it really falls apart. Maybe it's just me being boring but less is more in my veiw and not just for Michigan gear.
I like that the "M" is embroidered versues the screen print Nike uses on their polos but the stripe on the shoulders is just strange. It reminds me of a blank nameplate. I do think some of the Nike stuff looks better but they are just as guilty of using the same template for every school mixing in strange colors and making the "swoosh" just as prominant as the university logo. Neither company seems to care that we are Michigan, Michigan St., Alabama, ND, etc fans and not fans of adidas or Nike.
Lol, the coaches polos are a step back from last year? Seriously?
Yes, seriously they are. Last years polo/golf shirt did not have that dorky nameplate trim across the back and arms. That alone is a step back back in my veiw.
Wolv Devotee shows a dozen or so new items (I assume he would be the one to know what was and wasn't available last year) and everyone goes on this "everything is crap" kick. If you go to the Mden site, there is an adidas section with literally hundreds of different choices for just about every taste.
You can still get your traditional Block M stuff. These are not the only choices.
Adidas is just like any other company and try to cater to as many potential customers as possible. What you or I may look at and see "hot garbage", somebody else might love. I definitiely do not like a lot of the examples the OP put up, but I am not OUTRAGE about it either.
I know this is the internet and only HOTFASHIONTAKES are permitted, but c'mon.
This is how you do sideline gear. Clearly, Adidas is doing it wrong.
Look at the block M with cursive 'ichigan' on their pants. Horrible. And the sweaters...just...glad they are gone. Even Adidas shit trumps that look
Here's some more stuff. Some of it is actually pretty good and what everything from Adidas should be like. It looks like it might be for the golf team though.
But yeah, I agree that some of that stuff is questionable. It seems like Adidas spends all of their money on soccer and the NBA and they do a good job with that IMO.
This stuff is awful. Pretty consistently awful though so there is that.
Can't wait to see how they gear up or soccer team though.
...that M-Den was not carrying Addidas and this was a sign we were going back to Nike. Man the '90's Michigan gear was so cool. Even out here in LA you couldn't go anywhere without seeing kids wearing fab five shorts or Michigan football shirts. I digress...
EDIT: that stuff looks like the knock off crap you would find at Meijer's back in the day.
Like the visor, the polo is ok (I buy at least one each year) and the pull over is nice. the rest are assinine
WolvDev posts about the new crazy ass Adidas gear. He only highlights the weirdest of the weird. We all understand why. He's a batshit crazy teenage superfan who already has every single normal piece of Michigan clothing that exists. Why would he share all of the normal options Adidas puts out consistently?
Grown men and women throw temper tantrums and complain that they wish there was something normal. These neckbearded mouthbreathers never even bother to go look at the website. Go look at the website. Even if you want to limit the options to Adidas apparel, you will find almost everything people are whining about.
There are normal maize polos. There are normal blue polos. There are plain blue hats with a maize block M. There are plain maize hats with a blue block M. There are normal shorts and jackets. Almost every single thing people are begging Adidas to make exists. Most of you just like complaining.
Some of you idiots act like WolvDev's post is the extent of all of the Michigan Apparel released by Adidas this year.
Agreed, fanatics.com has 390 mens Adidas items. The OP posts 5 shirts, 2 shorts and some hats and they act like everything from Adidas is crap.
Just the new stuff like the new player gear and sideline wear. Like you said, there's no point posting the normal stuff like the standard essentials.
The sideline/coaches/player/travel gear. That stuff is renewed every year. I usually go for the plain hats myself. They do exist.
Here's a photo I bet you'll all love. This was after Purdue in 2011.
You know there are millions of other designs out there. You probably own most of them. I'm criticizing the MGoIdiots who bitch about the lack of standard/traditional/classic designs. Even though they're right on the MDen website for everyone to see, let's blame Brandon and Adidas.
I know. +1'd ya.
I meant the general population of anti-Brandon posters would love that photo. Me in full Michigan adidas gear w/him.
The official fitted baseball hat is great but they are always out of stock in my size. I've called every M-Den and they only have it in size 7 5/8 and larger.
I also wish they would bring back the skinny M hats Lloyd wore back in the 90's.
And what about the script Michigan hockey jersey...
Google is your friend.
Some things you can't get at MDen. Whether it be size or color. That's when you go the route of Fanatics/FansEdge.
Nike, is the one who got rid of the script Michigan jersey. NOT adidas. That jersey has been gone for over ten years now. There have been TWO Nike design changes with the Maize jersey since they got rid of that. The block M and the diagonal which was later picked up by adidas.
The student shirt and visor are the only things that even look decent. The rest of the items are a flaming bag of dog poo. Not only would I not buy any of these items, but if someone were to gift them to me I would immediately take them to goodwill. I couldn't even try to put it on eBay because no one can possibly be dumb enough to pay money for these items. Someone please get Nike back fergodsakes.
I also realize that there are many plain items to be bought as well that are fine. But any apparel company could just slap a block M on a hat and have it look fine. The stuff Nike used to put out regularly looked much much better. I can't remember so many total whiffs by them. I would never buy the Adidas hats anyway, New Era is where it's at for hats.
I cannot believe all of the whining for Nike. You can keep them and their shady business practices and corrupt support of the Oregon program. The last merchandise I purchased from them was junk and fell apart in no time.
The M brand makes the gear, not the manufacturer. There is plenty of excellent adidas stuff.
Stop whining, and act like Michigan Men.
The majority of these look so cheap and recycled. I'm just not very impressed with the products Adidas has created for ANY school. Seems like they ran out of ideas about 3 years ago. Ugly, ugly shit.
I would only buy the white pull over. What the fuck is up with the hats? They have some strange slightly darker blue stripes on a slightly lighter blue base.
The gear gets worse and worse. Adidas sucks at this college thing
Adidas is hot garbage. My wife just bought me a pairf of climalite mesh shorts, and they have holes in them after getting washed one time. last adidas shirt I bought started coming apart at the seams after only a couple of rounds of golf. Its just awful quality, and not because Im a "we were better when we wore Nike" guy
If you're drying them in a dryer, you're doing it wrong.
Nike is shit. God forbid Michigan ever go back to them, but if they do, people are going to bitch about their stuff as well.
2 out of 10's of thousands of items. Yeah, that's a good sample size to make a blanket that adidas is just "awful quality". Somehow half the world cup teams and the NBA are getting by with adidas.
Visor is nice, shorts are ok, the polo shirt and sweater at the top are meh due to the back stripe, the yellow football shirt is pretty good, the rest is just terrible.
Only two more seasons until the Adidas contract is up. For the sake of the program I really hope Brandon listens to the his players and the fans and doesn't re-sign with them.
