We seem to capitalizing on this years momentum.
Every Michigan commit for 2013 committed before the season even started, so "this year's momentum" had nothing to do with it.

Yeah, the only reason 2013 rank > 2012 rank is because our class is full and most others are not.
You never know though, maybe our guys will ascend the rankings like GRIII has done this year.

Since Austin Hatch will likely not play (and considering he is the lowest ranked 2013 player), I would venture to say the 2013>2012. Especially if they can land 5* James Young from Troy.

ESPN has McGary, Robinson, and Stauskas at 22, 27, and 79, respectively. As much as I like the 2013 class, it's highly unlikely that Irvin, Walton, and Donnal will be able to beat those rankings. And it's even less likely that Young is coming to Michigan.

As people start to get more commitments we will bump down a bit. Still a very good start.
I will also say though that I think Irvin and walton will rise in the rankings which will offset the bumping down of other teams getting commitments.

Exactly, and Irvin is a more similar player to GRIII than THJr, IMO. I'm sure Beilien will figure out how to get them both on the floor though. There will be some sets where the can play 2-3 and some where they can play 3-4.

Don't mean to criticize a fellow Californian, but your opinion is misinformed. You're correct that Irvin is more similar to THJ than GRIII, but GRIII won't take over the same TYPE of 3 that THJ is. Let me explain.
GRIII is a slasher; THJ is a shooter. Yes, Timmy can drive and Robinson can shoot. But their games are different. GRIII has a 36' vert and doesn't shoot a lot of threes (just look at his highlight tapes to see the shooting.) Timmy is a lights out shooter (at all times before this year. For instance, in HS, he averaged over 30 PPG his senior year, and his highlight tapes all include him shooting A LOT of threes.)
Yes, they will both play the 3. But that doesn't mean they'll play it the same way. GRIII could even play the 4, which I think a lot of people don't realize. (And anyone who talks about height....Morgan 6'8; GRIII 6'7.)
Furthermore, at the 3, he'd be more of a slasher. THJ doesn't slash...just ask Brian. Or, Dylan over at UmHoops. So: yes, they'd play the same position. No, they wouldn't be similar.
(But Irvin might. He seems to have a really good shot, but IMHO it's too early to tell.)

Maybe Hardaway Jr. 3.0?
The point was that—based on what the Michigan coaches told him—Irvin compared himself to Hardaway Jr. when he committed:
[Irvin] said Michigan’s style of play was a major factor in his decision. In particular, he watched how Beilein used Tim Hardaway Jr. in the offense and envisioned himself in a similar role.
“They talked a lot about how they can use me coming off ball screens, either shooting or creating,” Irvin said. “I watched them a couple games in the NCAA Tournament last year and watched how Tim Hardaway Jr. played. I think I can play the same way.”

From what I've seen, Rivals isn't as highly thought of when it comes to basketball rankings as they are football. A lot of people think ESPN is the best basketball site. But regardless, I'm not complaining about being ranked #2 anywhere.
Only concern I have is it seems like a decent reason we're ranked so high is because of quantity. All 3 are very good players, and I'm ecstatic that they're Wolverines, but I don't think the class of #54, #87, and #124 will stay at # 2 for long. Maybe if we sign one more top player this will be more sustainable, but regardless of what we end up being ranked, we will have a very good class.
*I say 3 because everything I've read seems like Hatch either will reclassify to 2014 if he plays at all. But still that's the least of the concerns with him, his physical and mental health is much more important.

I agree that by the end the ranking won't be #2. Not counting Hatch and assuming the player's rankings stay around where they are now, the class would probably end up in the 15-25 range.
2012:
Virginia was ranked 22nd with 4 players, 1 unranked, the others: 35, 109, 120
2011:
Florida State was ranked 23rd with 4 players, 1 unranked, the others: 56, 91, 103
2010:
Virginia was ranked 20th with 5 players, 1 unranked, the others: 30, 108, 119, 148

Ya we are ranked so high right now because of the quantity of players we have but it is still nice to see that we have 3 guys ranked in the rivals top 150. Plus Derrick Walton is a triple double machine. Irvin is a huge commit because we need another point guard and if Burke has a great sophomore season he might go pro. Donnal is a big body and we def. need another big so I love the signing there as well. It would be nice to get another big time recruit to finish this calss. Also, thanks MichiganMan for the update on Hatch. I haven't seen much about his status until now but even if he doesn't play basketball again I just hope his scholarship is still honored at Michigan. He is a very good kid from everything I have heard.

Reps of the Michigan AD have already stated numerous times that Austin Hatch will have a scholarship. My guess is that it won't end up being an athletic one, but for him to have recovered as much as he reportedly has already, you never know.
Austin Hatch is part of the family, and Michigan takes care of their own. It's sorta like Nick Saban in reverse.

Irvin is a SG of SF, 2 or 3 spots in the offense. I think you meant to say that Walton is the PG who will be backing up Burke (or replacing him [hopefully not] but Burke might lack the size to really try to the pros out before he graduates).

To go along with my comment above, it is also important to note that only 3 of their top 25 players have committed (2 to North Carolina). I think this list will change a little bit.

Anyone know off hand how many slots we have open in this class? I.e., are we going to be able to take more than these 3/4 players? It's obviously too early too know for sure, but I was just curious.

From what the folks over at Scout keep saying coupled with this staffs ability to identify talent early, I would expect Donnal to finish at least in the top 75...

I think he is primed to move up in the rankings as well. His season has gone great from all the reports I've read. That's what I love about Beilein. He spots talent early on. A majority of his commits since the 2009 class have shot up the rankings during the senior years or made a bigger impact in college than their rankings would indicate.
2009: Morris shot up the rankings, Jordan Morgan has turned into a solid B1G starter
2010: THJ is much better than his rankings indicated, Smot shot up the rankings
2011: Burke (nothing needs to be said),
2012: All three have gone up since Beilein has started recruiting them
2013: All are expected to make a jump in the rankings

First, you're list is WAY more exhaustive than mine, and super props for noticing this all. I agree entirely.
BUT, to go even more in-depth on just ONE recruit, look at McGary. His profile is over at UmHoops in 2012 recruiting section. We recruited him 3 years ago, when no one had even heard of him. He signed as the #2 recruit. 'nuff said.

I can't find a source right now, but the 2012 LOIs are in. I definitely remember seeing that McGary signed his LOI.

There are two basketball signing periods--one in the fall and one in the spring. All three members of the 2012 class for Michigan signed their LOIs last November. The members of the 2013 class will be able to sign LOIs this coming November.
EDIT: For a source, this U-M press release on Stauskas's signing also has links for releases on Robinson and McGary signing their LOIs.
Also, FYI, the spring signing period (for the 2012 class) is April 11 to May 16. The early signing period for the 2013 class is Nov. 14-21.

Looks good so far - it will be interesting to see how Irvin and Hardaway co-exist, since they both will play the same position and you want to get that size and athleticism out there.
