...on disaster relief, after being forced to run the option in Hurricane Katrina*

* Note: I did not actually watch that game, but I relied on a recounting from newscaster and eyewitness Mike Valenti.

Seriously, though, props to Stanton for being active in the charitable community. I am proud when current and former Michigan players are involved, but the needy benefit whoever's name is on it.

Kyle Kalis comes in for immediate praise as having had a good spring.  He just wasn't ready last year, schematically as much as anything else.  Jack Miller mentioned next as having played well.  Glasgow mentioned first as competing at LG, but then Braden mentioned and noted as being "as talented an offensive lineman as we have here."

This would seem like an ideal weekend to get recruits on campus and see all the Michigan greats, but it looks like it is one of the slowest recruting weekends in a while...

for the foreseeable future. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't hear any convincing rationale for pairing them the way they're going to do.

If the Notre Dame game were to ever come back, Michigan would want it home in even years to offset MSU and Ohio on road. Notre Dame probably would not be conducive to that as they play USC on the road in even years. Brandon made it clear he is going to try to schedule marquee nonconference matchups to be home in even years.

This scheduling quirk may prevent ND rivalry from returning in the foreseeable future as well.

Isn't he the head of one of the members of the Big Ten? I'm not sure how when a layman can spend 2 minutes looking at the schedules and see a flip flop between M, MSU, and Indy can fix it that fast for all teams that it's something that the Big Ten can't easily fix without messing up the rest of their schedules.

Sounds like MSU and Ohio both away in even years and home in odd years is here to stay for the foreseeable future. The only thing that could change the schedules at this point is conference expansion which does not seem likely in the near future.

DB also mentioned that contract will be up in 3 1/2 years and will be looked at like all other contracts.  You could tell that it's a contract DB is not happy with when he said something to the effect of "it was set before my time here."

Something tells me Adidas will no longer be come another 3 1/2 years, but that has to be obivious...right?

Leaders And Best

Adidas signed Michigan to a $66.5 million contract over 8 years in 2007. For comparison, Alabama just signed the most lucrative Nike collegiate deal worth $30 million over 8 years in 2010--not even close to what Michigan got. Will Adidas continue to overpay to try to make a dent in collegiate sports?

to make sure M plays Ohio and Sparty in basketball every year, home and away

(when he's not twirling his moustache and taking money from the downtrodden in AA)

Didn't sound very committed to Addidas, paraphrasing "obviously this contract was signed before me, we'll honor it; and when it's completed they'll have some decisions to make and so will we."

Arkansas in 2018 and Virginia Tech in 2020. Brandon can hype these games up as much as he wants, but they are not a substitute for Ohio, MSU, or Notre Dame.

Hopefully our marquee crossdivision games will be home in even years. but I thought there was no way the Big Ten could do what they did with the MSU & Ohio games and Nebraska & Ohio the last 2 years so I'm not counting on the Big Ten office getting anything right anymore. The Big Ten schedulers have screwed us over 2 times in a row now when they have remade the schedules.

especially to try to add a marquee opponent. We already play 2 major opponents in the nonconference with Utah at home and Notre Dame on the road. There is no way he tries to add another big name opponent to that schedule

Brandon is just trying to put spin on a bad situation in my opinion. The 2014 schedule is pretty much set in stone.

Bodogblog

He was pretty clear - and I think he may have said outright - that he can't do much about the 2014 schedule, that was set years ago.  He was referring to better non-conf opponents going forward.

He did mention 2015, and that is a nice non-conf. slate: at Utah, Oregon State and BYU at home (along with Ohio and Sparty at home that year)

And I think it was on purpose, to blow by the fact that the 2014 home schedule sucks. I think he MEANT future schedules to "stay tuned" for, but it was in direct response to complaints about the 2014 schedule.  So he kinda didn't answer the question, and there would probably have been a follow-up if this wasn't charity day.

You don't use a phrase that everyone knows insinuates action. You say something along the lines of "We are looking at our options". It indicates the potential for action while promising nothing. "Stay tuned" indicates to the listener to remain alert(which is exactly you don't want if you are trying to shoo people away from a subject.) for possible or even probable change.

but instead, you can count on DB to break out the condescension toward his paying customers when explaining a bad decision:

We can whine about it if we want, but it's not going to do any good . . . . What people need to understand is the conference schedules the football games — the athletic directors don't, and the football coaches don't.

The poor guy -- maybe someone can get him the number for the B1G conference office so he can leave a message with Delany's secretary. Then some office assistant can get back to him and let him know how the conference arrived at Michigan's 2014 home schedule. If only the Michigan athletic director had some power or pull over conference football decisions.

Dave Brandon isn't shy of making big moves. Wouldn't surprise me much if he booted one of App State, Utah or Miami (OH) to try to get a one-off against another BCS team (I know we have some scheduling agreement with the MAC so Miami may not be bootable)

I think USC, Texas A&M, and LSU were mentioned as teams that have open dates in September. He may be trying to secure those games.

And I know it's very late for scheduling changes, but Dave Brandon knows he needs to make money and he can probably see that he's going to struggle to sell season tickets in 2014 already. I think "Stay Tuned" means he's actively working on something for that season

Leaders And Best

Wisconsin is in talks to play them in Texas in 2014. LSU has already said no to a neutral site game at Lambeau as they do not want to play even a semi-road game in the North.

Getting a marquee program to play a road game a year in advance is near impossible.

We've got Appy State at home on August 30, 2014, and an open date in 2016 on Sept.10.

How about ditching Appy St. and filling those two dates with a home-and-away with a real opponent that we'd actually get credit for beating?

Leaders And Best

May 17th, 2013 at 9:56 AM ^

Big Ten goes to 9 conference games in 2016. Our home schedule is screwed in even years for the next two cycles (2014 & 2016) and possibly the foreseeable future.

Only way to add a game to 2016 is to buy out Hawaii or Ball State.

I don't see Brandon buying out App State or Miami (OH) with Utah at home and @Notre Dame already on the schedule in 2014. Besides, it is near impossible to find a marquee opponent only one year in advance.

Am I the only one that kind of wants us to play Appy St again?  I mean, not playing them again is never going to erase The Horror.  It will suck to have to watch the endless highlight replays leading up to the game.  But if we come out and crush them, then, eh, now we no longer have a losing record to them, and anytime someone brings The Horror up, we could just respond "56-7" or something like that which I hope the score will be.  Bam, natural order restored.  If I were Appy St., I wouldn't have taken the game.  A loss takes some of the luster off the first game.  A loss just proves The Horror was one of those freak upsets that happens in sports.
