2013 Class

So as we are set to sign the 2012 class does anybody have any info on how many kids we plan on taking in 2013? Obviously there are things yet to be determined such as how many we will still take in 2012, the Stonum situation, and other defectors, but just curious to know of any ideas.

Also any ideas on position needs for the class??

My New Year's resolution: I will neg all posts that I come across failing to comprehend a sarcastic remark or demanding an '/s'. Did Jonathan Swift write '/s' at the conclusion of A Modest Proposal to help people understand that he was not really advocating infanticide? Does Stephen Colbert put an '/s' mark after every statement? As Michigan fans, we should not be the type of people who require '/s' marks to understand the intent of a statement, especially one so obviously ridiculous as the pressing need for a quarterback in the 2013 class.

Joking aside.  With this year's class as large as it is, it's hard to argue that there are many gaps in the 2012 class that the 2013 class needs to fill.  That said, it would seem that we did a great job signing "big time" prospects on defense in general, and also on the O-line.  I think some great skilled players on offense in the 2013 class would really round out the two years nicely.

DT, WR, and RB seems to be the positions of need.

Even if Wormley is converted into a 3-tech DT, the cupboard is bare at that position.  Even if OBrien didn't impress his senior season, we need bodies at that position...

WR looks a little scary as well; Stonum (IF he plays) and Roundtree will be gone after next year.  Will Jeremy Jackson be Denard's jump-ball target next year?

RB; even if Rawls is Mike Hart morphed with Tyrone Wheatley, we need another top-flight RB for 2013...

O-line depth never hurts, but we took a LOT in 2011, 2012.  Wouldn't imagine very many LBs signed either.

Michigan should take 4-5 offensive linemen every year, and I'm not sure what you've been looking at, but Michigan currently has ZERO 2010 linemen and TWO 2011 linemen on the roster. They'll need 6 more in the 2013 cycle just to get up to acceptable numbers.

If I'm not mistaken there should be about 20 scholarships available with some attrition, etc. for the '13 class.

Obvious needs are QB, RB, WR, and DT.  I think those will be addressed with some depth.

I think after that you will see spots for about 4 O-linemen, a LB or 2, and 2-3 DBs, and one or two DE.  I think the hope going forward is to not have huge holes to fill like O-line was this year, so aften next year the team should be fairly balanced and then you'll see the coaches essentially replacing departing talent year to year rather than going for huge numbers at certain positions.  I think this is part of the reason why the coaches didn't take more WRs or DTs this year.

As far as LB's go, a SAM, preferably two, needs to be recruited. None of the 4 linebackers in the 2012 class project to that position in the future, unless someone like Ojemudia ends up there.

WDE will also be a bit scarce, since after Roh graduates the only true WDE on the roster is Frank Clark, unless the aforementioned Ojemudia goes there, or if Beyer moves back there. If one or both of those two end up there, it will be paramount to recruit a SAM.

And as always, they will need to recruit some offensive linemen. Not as many as this year but once this class graduates I don't think anyone is going to want to have to deal with a mass exodus of depth.

Depending on exactly what Borges wants to do when we are full on pro-style and also depending on what Sam Grant decides in the next month, our need at TE will will either be severe or simply strong and I bet we take two.

Major bummer that Steve Elmer picked Notre Dame so early in the process. He's the kind of bookend tackle that we're thinner on in our OL recruiting. I'm hoping Kelly flames out next year and we can flip him. It's not often that an in-state offensive lineman gets five stars from the recruiting services. It'd be good to keep him home.

I certainly agree with you, but I have a hard time seeing it happen, seeing as he was rooting against us for the UTL game.  Point being, it seems he is more dedicated to the school than the coach.  And even so, if Kelly does get canned, they'll get the next hot name / overrated coach to take his place that will recruit well.

I think our class will end up being around 20. People will freak out and say we only have like 16 scholarships this year, but whatever...it always works out. Those same people thought 22 was a good number this year and we're going for 28.

Final number will depend on attrition and how many guys we take this year in the end.  But next year, I'd say the needs will be in no particular order:

1. RB - probably need at least 2 really good, pro-style backs.

2. TE - need one elite prospect who can run and catch

3.  WR - need a big, speedy guy or two to stretch the field.

4.  DT - need one or two big, strong guys to complement Pipkins, Wormley

5.  OT - always need to pick up at least 3-4 top guys, even with this year's haul.  I'd think a center and guard would be priorities.

6.  QB - the depth chart says we need another besides Morris

7.  DB - need at least 3-4 top guys here.  Already have one (Thomas)

8.  LB - this year we can afford to be VERY choosy - so 1-2 elite players.

9.  DE - always need 1-2 good players here.

That should round out a class of 20 or so.

Why would center and guard be the priorities for OL recruiting in 2013? In 2013, our tackles will be Lewan, Schofield, and whoever ends up at tackle from the current class (Braden and Magnuson seem most likely). Our guards/centers will be Chris Bryant, Jack Miller, and whoever ends up at guard/center from the current class (Kalis, Bars, Stacey, and Garnett, if he comes, most likely).

In 2014, when those 2013 OL would be ready to play, our tackles will be redshirt sophomores Braden and Magnuson and our guards/centers will be Bryant, Miller, Kalis, Bars, and Stacey (and hopefully Garnett).

If Garnett rounds out this class, I would bet that one of Garnett, Kalis or Bars will be a tackle. All three of them fall in the OG/OT mold, guys who may be better slotted at guard but have the height to play tackle as well. In fact, I think Rivals lists all of them as tackles, so it looks like our class of six will have three tackle and three interior guys.

If AJ Williams is an OL, that throws another curve into the equation.

If we fill up the 2012 class, there are 17 seniors scheduled to graduate next season.  That means we'll have 17 scholarships...but that number will obviously grow due to transfers, early departures, injuries, etc.

Well, that assumes Cox, TRob and Stomun are back on scholarship, meaning we only take 26 in this class.

I would guess that at least, maybe two of those guys don't get a 5th year and their spot is filled with a 2012 guy, meaning we have 15 or 16 seniors leaving after next fall.

I had a soft number of around 20 recruits.

Both lines need to be looked at, but I think that goes with every year.  After that, I think we need to take a hard focus at skill positions, try and grab a couple top tier WRs, and a top RB, to go along with that kid from Warren.  If we can upgrade both lines and get the skilled positions, I'd be very happy with this class.  After that, just take the BPA.

You can tell from the offers that have already gone out that this is will be a major focus of the 2013 class. There have been 9 offers so far and they are all in the 6'1"-6'5" range and highly ranked national recruits. They want them big, and fast, and rangey. That unfortunately means no more slot ninjas but I for one can't wait for another Braylon or Manningham. I like the potential of the 2012 guys we have, but they project better as possession receivers to me than as game breakers, and that really seems like the kind of guy they feel they need still.
