2011 QB Christian Lemay has Top 10

Submitted by Mr. Maize on
Top 2011 QB Prospect Christian Lemay has cut his huge offer list down to 10 schools already. Unfortunately, Michigan is not included. Obviously Signing Day is over a year away for him, but given Michigan's QB depth, I don't know if he was ever really going to give us a look. Thought I'd pass this along though: http://michigan.scout.com/a.z?s=162&p=9&c=2&cid=918314&nid=4152948&fhn=…

If I were a top QB next year, I wouldn't choose Michigan either. I mean, really, unless Tate Forcier substantially regresses AND Devin Garder just doesn't pan out at all, you're looking at, at BEST, maybe one year to start. Maybe. Look for our next big name QB to sign in 2012.

That's not what he said. But if you are a QB who has a lot of options, picking a school who has an incumbent starter who is 2 years older than you, and the top Dual Threat QB from the year before you, who will likely RS and be in your class if you don't redshirt, is not necessarily a great idea. Most schools don't take a top QB every year. We got one of the best this year, so I don't foresee us getting one of the best next year. Kinda how it works. This is why the top QB's from this past class weren't looking at USC too hard.

..and I wouldn't mind seeing next year be a year of OL, DL, and LB's as the main focus, with the rest of the class falling where it may according to who is the best player at any position. It won't get nearly the rating of a QB and RB-heavy class, but it would help the Wolverines as they go into 2011 and 2012. As long as there are three legit QB's on the team, they will be fine.

Do we even take a QB? Or do we take a QB like Co(r)nelius who can play QB but also DB (or some other position). I would assume a very athetlic QB in the mold of Co(r)nelius. QB should not IMO be a priority.

Yeah, I do think we're going to have to take a project this year at QB. Or simply a guy with a lower ceiling. We've brought in top quarterbacks for two years in a row. We can afford to take a lower-tier guy as long as he can provide us some depth at QB for a while, and not just a "We'll take him as a QB for a year and then move him to another position" type of guy.

We have to take a QB of some sort in 2011. With Denard likely moving to another position and Jones' future questionable, we really only have 2 legitimate quarterbacks on the roster.

If both stay at QB (highly unlikely) or even 1 then we definitely don't even need a QB. But as you said if both change positions (most likely scenario) then we will need a 3rd stringer ala CONE!!!!!!!! Also, Where'd your avatar go? Did you lose him on Pandora?

In addition to the lack of depth if Jones or Robinson or both change positions, Forcier may transfer if Gardner passes him on the depth chart within the next two years. Likewise, Gardner may transfer if there is a coaching change next year and Michigan moves back to a pro-style system. Michigan looks good at Qb right now, but it is not "set" until 2015. A lot of different things can happen.

I agree we don't really need a QB in '11. It would be nice to have three blue-chippers on the depth chart, but that's not realistic. Almost nobody does this. Just about every major program nowadays has one good upperclassman who plays for a few years and then an heir apparent who is a true freshman or a redshirt freshman. Look at Texas. Did they have a 4-star junior to step in when Colt McCoy was hurt? No. They had a freshman. Look at Ohio State. They are screwed if Pryor gets hurt. Look at Penn State. If Darryl Clark had gotten hurt this year, they would have been screwed. Look at Michigan when Chad Henne was here. In 2006 and 2007 our QB depth was frightening. When it comes to positions of need for the 2011 class, I would rank QB firmly behind DL, OL, and LB.

This is not that case. USC had 3 scholarship QB's last year (Corp, Mustain, Barkley), but yes they were all 4 or 5 stars. Corp transfered, and they brought in one QB in this class (middle of the road 4 star). That means that this fall, we will have as many 4-5 star QB's as they have (3). And apparently Mitch Mustain isn't worth a shit, so we can barely count him anyway. Last year he was a 4th year junior, and the starting QB battle was between a true freshman and an injured soph.

OK, the point is that many teams are stacked with several, yes even three, 4-5 star guys on the roster so that does doesn't preclude signing another 4 star guy for UM. At UM it may be a bit tougher will the state of things so it may take a guy that has an affinity for UM or some other special connection.

on some of your examples to demonstrate "no one does this." Blue in NC has already noted it, but it's a mixed bag. Some certainly have done it and continue to do it. Texas: Jevan Snead came in the year after McCoy. When it became clear that the job was McCoy's to lose IIRC, Snead bolted to Ole Miss. You're right though in that they didn't bring in another elite QB for a couple years until they brought Gilbert in. Now, however, they've signed Connor Wood right on the heels of Gilbert last year, plus took another pretty highly regarded QB in this class. PSU fits your theory the best as Morelli was a 4/5 star in '04 class. Clark came in the next year and wasn't highly rated out of HS. The next year ('06) they took Pat Devlin. But they took no QBs in '07 or '08 (maybe they just missed on some kids? ... I don't recall). Last year the brought in Newsome. And this year, right on the heels of KN, they've got Bolden and Paul Jones coming in. In Michigan's case, it was more circumstances than lack of signing highly rated QBs. Henne ('04) came in right after we'd taken Guiterrez ('02) and Richard ('03). The injury put RS Soph MG behind Henne on the depth chart. Richard's interests veered to baseball. Jason Forcier came in the next year ('05 class and he was 4-starish). Cone was the only QB in '06. Then it was Mallet ('07). Basically Cone was the only year in that stretch they didn't take a big time prospect. Despite this, depth still had issues as you noted but wasn't from a lack of signing highly rated QBs. FWIW, USC's elite QB harvest since '01: Leinart '01, year off '02, Booty '03, Sanchez '04, '06 year off, Corp '07, Mustain (defacto '08 incoming recruit), Barkley '09.

For the class of 2011 I think we are looking at other positions of need like linebacker and Oline and if an elite quarter back decides that he wants to come to Michigan I don't think we turn him down, but at this point we have other spots to fill.

Rodriguez has said that he'd ideally have 5 or 6 scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. I'd say that points to taking a quarterback just about every year. I uploaded a new avatar, but it hasn't appeared yet. It must be lost somewhere, flirting with Zoe Saldana in cyberspace.

Lemay will be an EE said he wants to get his list down to 5 by May and 3 by July. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets drawn out a bit more than that though.

UM, WV, Ore... all run the read option spread offense. Pretty much all that are left run some form of passing spread or pro set. If the kid does not want to be in our O, I see very little change of our status changing.

Kevin Newsome said he didn't want to run the read option spread...right before he committed to Michigan...and then decommitted to play for PSU. So I wouldn't read too much into that. Things change.
