2011 NBA Draft questions

Submitted by Ziff72 on

So with the newss that Barnes is joining Sullinger and staying in school, I'm starting to get a little more worried about D Mo because guaranteed money is hard to turn down and each guy that stays in bumps D Mo up.   So I had a couple of questions for guys in the know.

Is the draft definitely happening?

Would rookies get signed and get paid?  It would seem like they would be caught in limbo.

From all accounts the NBA lockout will be worse than the NFL so these kids really could be screwed if they leave and have no contract.

The reason a lot of super talenetd guys (Perry Jones from Baylor too) are staying in school is pretty clearly because people are telling them there's going to be a lockout.  So unless the kids' families are in dire need (which I believe is not the case with Darius), they're mostly staying put.

Quite a few guards have declared.  I wouldn't worry too much about that.  Morris is not likely to be projected as a first-rounder.

Darius Morris, G, So, Michigan*
.... has the size, floor vision and inside-outside game that NBA scouts covet in a guard. Morris isn't an elite athlete and still needs to improve his 3-point stroke, but if he stays in the draft, he's got a shot at the first round. ... A number of NBA scouts told ESPN.com that he needs to return to school to be a lock for the first round -- perhaps even the lottery. Morris has until May 8 to decide whether he'll stay in the draft.

link ($)... It's not that hard to see a scenario where he does well at a pre-draft camp and takes advantage of a very weak draft class (worst since 2000 ($)). I don't think it will happen or should happen, but the NBA draft is so dumb, really really dumb.

I don't anticipate Darius' draft grade being in the ballpark of a place where it makes sense for him to come out.

This NBA draft is, however, historically weak in my opinion. If I could trade a lottery pick for just about any established player I would pull the trigger.

As has been said, the draft will happen regardless. The draft is at the end of June and the league year doesn't end until July 1st. The players would not get paid by the teams, but they could sign endorsements. That's probably not a big windfall for Morris, but for the guys at the top, they can definitely get paid. One interesting side note, if the league gets what it wants and changes the age limit to 2 years out of high school, next year's draft will be awful and a guy like Morris could move way, way up.

He still has so many areas to improve at, it is hard to imagine him jumping after a good-but-not-great year.  Plus, he seems to really like playing with this team, and I'm not sure I'd trade that in for a spot on the bench with New Jersey or Phoenix even with the extra money.  If he comes back next year and improve, he'd be a lock to be both a 1st rounder and maybe even a lottery guy, which makes a whole lot more sense than taking a chance this year and winding up in Turkey.
