I was hoping there would be some trips to the East Coast this year, but it's good for the current students that all the OOC games seem to be at home. I know I complained about all the East Coast trips when I was in school...

With miami having a young team this year, Michigan and nd will be the top two. The series on the road with ND will be crucial for the regular season championship. What I want to see this year from this Michigan team is a:

CCHA Regular Season Championship or CCHA Tournament Championship

GLI Championship

And a strong run in the NCAA tournament.

Oh and also....SWEEP MIAMI AND STATE.

will be young.  Their defense is pretty seasoned (they're adding a likely first-rounder D-man to replace their graduating senior on D.  The freshman joins 3 seniors and 2 juniors.  He's not quite Jon Merrill, but he's very, very good)) and both of their goalies are seniors.

Also, their recruiting class isn't so bad.  In fact, it downright looks like a nomal Michigan class.  2 or 3 of their forwards will probably go in the first 2 rounds and a few more will sprinkle thorughout the draft.  That's not to say that they'll go in as freshman and tear up the league.  But if they can get one decent scorer out of their freshman and Reilly Smith doesn't drop off too much (or, heaven forbid gets better) from the lack of Miele, they'll be far more dangerous than ND was last year (because they're defense is much older and their goalies are better than ND's Johnson who was average most of the time).  If Miami can get two freshman to contribute decently and Smith doesn't fall off too much, they could very well be challenging ND for the CCHA title.  Also, sweeping a team four games worth, even one that's bad, is very hard.  Sweeping a decent one is much more difficult.  I wouldn't expect to sweep Miami.  I'd be very happy with a split.

ND is probably going to be the best in the CCHA by quite a bit.  Like Miami 2009-2010 quite a bit.  Most likely Michigan and Miami are fighting it out for second, depending on what Blashill is able to do with WMU (again).

And BC is in the GLI.  They're reloading a little bit.  But they are reloading.  And it isn't THAT much.

And Michigan is still pretty young.  We're a long way from the panic we were in a few months ago, with all the commits Red has gotten since (especially Gibson, Hyman and Serville EDIT And keeping Guptill, forgot about him because he isn't a new commit, but he's pretty high-profile as well), but it's not like Michigan is reutrning the team they had last year.

There is no reason Michigan shouldn't be very, very good. There is no real reason why Michigan can't win the CCHA regular season/tournament, win the GLI and heck, win the National Title.  The team still has tons of talent and an incredible coaching staff (we miss you Mel), it's not like they turned into Tech overnight (sorry, Mel and various Tech fans on the board).  But I think other teams might have a better shot at at least 2 of those things.  More realistic expectations would be top-3 CCHA, make the Joe, make the NCAA tournament (yes, that's still in doubt, going into this season more so than going into any season I can remember).  If Michigan can put itself in a position to win things, (it's single-elimination hockey for the CCHA, the GLI and the NCAA, anyhting can happen), I'll be very happy.

I still see this as a down year for miami. The GLI will be tough with BC, but I think Michigan can handle em. ND is loaded but this is still Michigan and will be up there challenging. My expectations are at least to win a (Regular Season or Tournament) CCHA Championship. I'm not expecting a deep run in the NCAA's like last year, but hey ya never know?

Especially in things like one and done tournaments.  I guess I'm just a bit of a pessimist.  Don't get me wrong, I still expect Michigan to be very good.  I just think it'll be a bit of a down year for them, too.  I'd feel a lot better about things if there was even one 20-goal scorer returning.  Several have the potential to do that, but nobody has.  It doesn't help the confidence when even Red is creating a schedule as easy as the one for this coming year and worrying about where he's going to find goals.  It wouldn't SURPRISE me (much) to have Michigan do any of the things you expect, I just can't expect it.  I'll go as far as to expect a tourney berth (I'll even be so bold as to say I think we sneak a 3-seed), but other than that, I just see too many teams that I think will be too good to expect the rest (disregarding the GLI, since it's basically a one-off with BC for the title.  Neither MTU nor MSU should really be a challenge for either U-M or BC in the title game, so that title is a complete toss-up).

Also, goodness gracious, this had to be a "down year" for Miami.  They have nowhere else to go from the last season or two...

Geez, two thirds of Michigan's home dates are before Christmas, which sucks, because attendance is always a little weak for that part of the hockey season that overlaps football season.

I understand that this is how most people operate, but I know for myself when I was an undergrad, there was nothing I relished more than hockey/football twin-bills.

Every year we would get at least one weekend of home hockey game Friday night, home football Saturday afternoon, home hockey Saturday night.  I would go to bed Saturday night completely exhausted, but it was great fun.  Senior year was perhaps the best, when we swept BU to kick off our early season run in hockey and smashed Minny to retain the Little Brown Jug as well.

Having graduated last month, and moved up to Anchorage soon after, I am one of few people on this board legitimately psyched for our trip to Alaska (i.e., UAF) Dec. 2-3.

Put another way - and having grown up in Anchorage - this is probably the first time in my life I am psyched to go to Fairbanks.  Unquestionably the first time I am pscyhed about going to Fairbanks in December.

In conclusion, I'd say I'm psyched.

- decade-long homesickness (even after 3 lovely years in A2)
- family
- jobs (I want to work for the state, and that's simply easier here than there/AK is not bankrupt)
- skiing

Those are the highlights. I do feel bad abandoning Michigan, but this is home. Shame about the 8 am kickoffs this fall, though.

4 weeks in January/February

Ohio State/Notre Dame/Miami/MSU   That's alot of tough hockey mixed with the rivalry hockey.  Hopefully Red has them rolling by then.
