2010 Starters (Football)

Submitted by varney_go_blue on
I'm curious to see what everyone thinks about next year's starters. Any suprises? Tell me if you think I'm wrong, which I am A LOT. OFFENSE ------------- QB - Tate Forcier SB - Vincent Smith X - Darryl Stonum Y - Martavious Odoms Z - Junior Hemingway TE - Kevin Koger LT - Perry Dorrestein LG - Stephen Schilling C - David Molk RG - Patrick Omameh RT - Mark Huyge DEFENSE ------------ DE - Ryan Van Bergen DT - Mike Martin NT - Will Campbell OLB - Craig Roh MLB - Obi Ezeh WLB - Jonas Mouton SLB - Floyd Simmons LCB - Donovan Warren (pending NFL Draft) SS - Troy Woolfolk FS - Mike Williams RCB - J.T. Floyd I may be way off on my predictions but who knows. Besides Turner coming in for Floyd, I don't know where I went wrong. Comments. Changes. etc.

1. You only have 10 guys on offense 2. That spot should either be a TE (Koger most likely) or another slot (Roundtree) 3. As others have pointed out Floyd Simmons? Um where is our favorite walk-on Kovacz?

is up in the air with Smith's injury. My guess is Shaw getting the starts, with other running backs getting some decent PT. I don't think Floyd Simmons will be a starter, not sure who will take Stevie Brown's place - I thought it would be B.Smith, now I'm guessing that spot is open for competition.

no...the depth probably looks a bit like this... MLB: Ezeh (Sr), Fitzgerald (Jr), Demens (So), Bell (Fr) WLB: Mouton (Sr), Leach (Jr), Jones (So) SLB: Hawthorne (Fr), Simmons (So), Kovacs? (So), Furman? (Fr)

Man, it's killing us. We couldn't get Hill or Witherspoon on campus. We couldn't keep Cissoko on the team. And now Brandon Smith apparently is heading out. That's four 4*s that could be providing defensive depth.

disagree to some extent. booboo wasn't starting before he got suspended, and was getting burned big time when he was. i can't imagine that he would have been able to hold off turner next season. probably still would have started if warren left, but chritian's good too... smith was backing up young walk-ons at all three positions they tried him at this season...kovacs, simmons, leach. i don't understand why everyone was penciling him as a future star. spoon might have helped out...but to expect more out of him than we're getting out of fitz is sort of biased, i think. hill would probably be playing at rohs position in our defense, and idk, im happy with roh.

Dude, you can only piss and moan on the same topic repeatedly on so many threads before it becomes irritating. Take a day off or get some quality beer (works for me sometimes), look at all of Wolverine Historian's material on YouTube... Buck up fella, you'll be okay. See you at the spring game...I'll be the guy with the beer.

...would have to make the greatest improvement known to mankind to start next year. Kovacs is better there right now, and I'd bet Marvin Robinson has a decent shot to start there.

I think RR overplayed his hand in redshirting Turner this season. We got off to a good start, and he got to thinking he could afford to put Turner on the shelf for the year and get four more good seasons out of him, despite the fact that he very well could have been our second-best option at CB. Once the season came completely undone, it was too late to call on a non-game-tested freshman. But if he had it to do over again, I think you'd see Turner (at least getting a chance) as a starting CB by midseason. That said, I think RR learned his lesson and will play Cullen next season if/when Warren leaves--hopefully showing the effectiveness to start by early season.

I don't think some people here understand how important a redshirt could be. It gives them a full year to develop and gain muscle. It can help them get accustomed to college life easier if they're mind isn't on playing in the game. You also get them for a full extra year with a redshirt and that could be huge in future success. Do you really think JT would have made that much of a difference in getting us a bowl?

with your first four sentences, but we have no way to know about your last point. Woodson, Marlin Jackson, and Leon Hall all contributed significantly as freshmen. If Turner is even a shadow of those guys, then, yes, I think he could have gotten us an extra win this season to push us into a bowl game. A semi-competent CB opposite Warren would have allowed us to keep Woolfolk at safety and thus one of our two disaster-masters off the field. That, in my opinion, would have been enough for at least one more win.

With Smith having a Torn ACL nothing is written in stone for him. Donovan has bascially said he will be in the NFL next year. I have about the same shot of starting as Simmons (no offense). Turner and Emilen will start in the secondary and watch out for one of the many redshirt freshmen to take the tackle spot.

That LT spot is going to be interesting. Omameh was good at RG and that would be a really solid interior line with Molk and Schilling. Omameh was awesome at getting downfield onto the LB's and don't know if he can utilize that as much at tackle? It will definitely be a battle for the tackle spots. I'd say, only based on playing time this year that Huyge and Dorrenstein are the favorites, but I'm sure we would all love for one of the younger guys to step up and give them a fight.

His best position by far is the Tackle. His arms are very long and he doesn't really have the size or strength to play inside, creating holes against 300 lbs. plus defensive tackles. His strength is the length of his arms and his athleticism making him a perfect OT. Huyge and Schilling can hold down the inside of the line at guard, with Molk at center.

At the RB position - at the beginning of the year, Shaw and Toussaint will probably be the top 2 options. On the O-line - expect Molk, Schilling and Omameh to have 3 spots. 2 out of Mealer, Huyge, Barnum, Khoury, Washington, Lewan, Dorrestein and Schofield will play, but i wouldn't be shocked if Omameh moves to LT, and the RG and RT positions are up for grabs. Huyge and Dorrestein didn't play the greatest this year. And the WR spots will be stocked - at the slot, Odoms, Roundtree, Kelvin Grady and Gallon. On the outside - Hemingway, Stonum, Je'Ron Stokes and the freshmen. My guess in the D backfield is - Woolfolk and Turner at CB with Avery, Grimes and Christian backing them up. Emilien and M-Robinson at safeties, with Williams, Vinopal, and Kovacs backing them up. I dunno. Those lineup possibilities are exciting.

Welcome to the board John Mick. At this point, I hate to waffle, but it's a combo platter. If the prognosis on V. Smith really is a torn ACL, I don't think he'll be back to full strength and confidence until later in the season, or, 2011. So that's the first consideration. The other consideration is that, if healthy, Shaw is in his third year in the system and should be productive. Furthermore, Toussaint was expected to play this year had he not hurt his shoulder. That's saying something considering that he really should have been a no question redshirt. I'm very excited that Toussaint has four years of eligibility remaining. So, I think at the beginning of 2010, Shaw and Toussaint (with MIKE COX as #3) will be the primary RBs.

Shaw is there for no other reason than his experience. Toussaint because he is our only RB who has been compared to Noel Devine. My biggest concern about V Smith's injury is: Do we have a RB who can help out in pass protection?? Last season we used Minor, Grady, and towards the end of the season, Smith. I never saw Mike Shaw throw a block in pass protection.

I would say that Emilien plays Free and M-Rob at Strong. Sorry to be contrarian : ) My reasoning is that Emilien backed up Williams at Free this year, and M-Robinson, especially if he enrolls early, seems to be an improved version of Jordan Kovacs (meaning, with speed and increased athleticism). However, I will say this: Kovacs wasn't even on the spring roster because he had knee surgery that the coaches asked him to have before he tried out again. The fact that he was out there was very impressive. But the surgery meant that he had NO Barwis before the summer, at the earliest. So, he played marginally well this year but had his limitations (which, coming in without s & c and off knee surgery, should not be surprising). I would expect him to greatly improve his game over the next 10 months, and he should be a more serviceable option if called upon to play.

maybe you are just mixing up the names here...but... FS - thats for the better run support safety. SS - thats for the better deep coverage guy. robinson is being told that he's coming in to play FS. emilen backed up woolfolk at SS all season. kovacs/williams battled it out at FS when woolfolk was at SS. kovacs played FS, with williams at SS when woolfolk was at CB.

Kovacs started out at FS (the in the box S) and he was actually very effective there. He then moved to SS (centerfield type) and his athletic limitations were just all too evident. If it was up to me (which I'm glad its not) I would put Woolfolk at SS and Marvin Robinson at FS with Vlad backing up SS and Kovacs backing up the FS (unless he moves to Sam which could make sense) This really shows how nice it would be to add Sean Parker to this class. He is an ideal SS. However, the coaching staff seems to love Woolfolk at CB. If Woolfolk plays CB then I would put Vlad at SS and Marvin Robinson at FS. I hear you when you say that Vlad backed up Williams at the FS last year but I think that Marvin is just much better suited for FS in this defense. People talk about him potentially moving to LB and the FS is much more like a LB than the SS. I would put Vlad at SS because I think he will end up being the best option there (assuming Woolfolk stays at CB and assuming Parker or Latwan does not committ). Of course Justin Turner or Cullen could end up at SS although I don't think that will happen. Too much speculation to entertain those ideas at the moment for me.

No more of this FS/SS stuff Box Safety (was Free Safety) Williams, MRob, and where Kovacs should be (a B.S. abbreviation is fitting, since Williams played like B.S. last year) Deep Safety (was Strong safety) Your center fielder types: Woolfolk, Emilien, posssibly Vinopal, and where Kovacs was hopelessly stuck last year

It's exciting to you that you project three freshman starters in the secondary? I agree that in the best possible scenario (kids live up to the hype), that would be our starting defensive backfiled, but still... The thing I am most excited about with our DBs is the COMPETITION. As soon as kids get on campus, stars mean nothing. There will be tons of talented young DBs pushing each other, and the best one will play. Turner, Avery, Grimes, Christian, and Floyd will all be battling for one or two spots. We really have absolutely no idea who will play, but the fact that there will be more options this year is what is exciting.

Well, two of them ARE RS Freshmen, and the other would be an early enrollee : ) If Warren leaves, the team has no choice, but lining up the #40 S in 2009, the #10 S in 2010, the #3 CB in 2009 as starters, as well as the #3 CB in 2010 in your two deep isn't too shabby. Glass half full, everyone, because the alternative isn't worth talking about.

that dorrestein will be starting, at least i hope not. i figure it'd look something like LT- Lewan/Dorrestein LG- Schilling/Barnum/Washington C- Molk RG- Omameh/Barnum/Washington RT- Omameh/Schofield Tate's your starter at QB i think Fitz sneaks in at RB there's no way floyd simmons or jt floyd starts mike williams ain't startin' either jt turner in place of floyd, m-rob in place of williams, i think one of jones, bell, or hawthorne at stevie's spot
