2010 Signee- Richard Ash

Submitted by flysociety3 on

Rivals has put out a few articles in which they have been in contact with a few 2010 signees. They have mentioned things like their workouts, when they will try and arrive to UofM, and their current weights. When Richard Ash signed with us, we all thought that at his listed 263 lbs, he would be a 3 tech or more "outside" D-Lineman..... This article quotes Ash as saying that he weighs around 310. He also says he is not "fat" and that he has been following the Barwis plan very well...If he is 310!!! that is crazy... That can add some more depth to nose tackle and add even more size to our D-Line.......Sounded like pretty good nes to me

I saw on the board that Steve Sharik had made the last post on this thread, and I thought to myself, I'd like to read Steve's insight on RIchard Ash, him being a defensive player and all.

And this is what I saw instead, haha.

This is nice to hear, but I think we heard he was 300lbs on signing day.    Hopefully he is in good shape and carries it well.  My only fear is that someone will start up with he could start this fall.

I think people were expecting Ash would lose weight, though, and not gain it. If he's up to 310 that means either obvious redshirt or the guy is a true NT. I'm hoping for the latter since Michigan seems to have a ton of options at DE but has one NT or two NTs on the roster for 2011.

I don't know...  When I found out he was about 300 lbs. a couple months ago, I automatically converted him to nose tackle in my head.  Once a guy is 300, I think it's better to turn that mass into muscle rather than trying to whittle 30 lbs. off of him.

That being said, the scouting report on him was that he played better when he was down around 240-245.  He apparently looked slower and stiffer when he was in the 260s.  Hopefully that was just because that extra weight was fat, not muscle . . . and hopefully those Barwis workouts are fixing that ratio.

You never know with high school kids.  Some of those big kids gain 30-40lbs immediately after football season because they don't have organized athletics and the metabolism of a redwood tree.

I'm in the redshirt category here too, which is probably good for most incoming Freshman anyways.

Being on the Barwis plan is one thing, being on it with him and his wolves in your face is another.  I'm willing to bet he drops some LBs when he actually gets to campus.  But still that is promising news.

No doubt about it, this is a good thing.  The one DL position we haven't recruited well in the last few years (outside of BWC) is the nose tackle.  We've picked up a number of solid DE recruits (Roh, LaLota, Wilkins, Black, Paskorz) and Terry Talbott is a 3-tech (so might be a few of those DE's in a year or two) but we needed a NT, especially for the front we will be playing.

If he's 310, I still think he drops 10-15 of that under real Barwis (and ends up redshirting).  Then, I bet he gains all of it back in muscle, to put him at a fit 310 somewhere around his RS frosh or soph year.  Based on our depth chart, he'll probably be in the 2-deep by his RS frosh year.

That is a lot different than the 263 lbs. that was reported on signing day.  He will lose some of that getting into camp and being worked by Barwis.  Hopefully, he is a true NT and has become very strong with the added weight.  He will need that strength if he wants to see the field this year.  I don't think most NTs coming out of high school have the strength and development to make an impact at the NT position in the Big Ten.

Yeah, I don't think he'll play this year.  We have Mike Martin, Greg Banks, BWC, Sagesse and Patterson to play 2 tackle spots.  There is a lot of size, skill, and experience in that group, so it would be tough for any true frosh to get PT, especially a guy who likely need a few months to get in shape.

I think he'll be fine. Remember before he signed it was stated that Ash had never touched a weight in high school (which amazes me), but if he's gaining a lot of mass I wouldn't be surprised if he played around 280-290 by the time he really develops at Michigan. You don't need to be a huge-ass 320 lb Nose Tackle to be good.

I think he still redshirts but just imagine the future of him and Campbell being our nose tackles. We are going to have a nasty defensive line in the future.
