2010 Recruiting: Current Commits & Available Slots

I've never been a huge recruitnik, but at this point, I really want to see some better players come in with the 2010 recruiting class. However, I honestly don't know how they'll make things work, given our current commitment list, and our needs.

I looked at the current commitment list, and I see 19 commitments currently:

2 QB
3 RB
5 WR
1 OL
1 DT
2 DE
1 LB
2 CB
1 S
1 P

I see the remaining needs:

2 - 3 OL
1 DT
1 DE
2 LB
2 CB
1 S

This is 9 more needed, for a total of 28.

In addition, there are great prospects out there in areas supposedly "filled" who I have been given to understand we would "make room" for. Examples would be Brennan Clay & Eduardo Clements at RB.

What happens now? Do some of our current commits mutually "bow out?" and go to MAC or other other Big Ten schools? Are they actually shifted from current position to a position of greater need (e.g., some of the WR recruits go to the secondary.) What is the maximum number of players we can accept and suit up? And does Witty count against this year, even though starting next year?

Do we recruit first to need, and then to talent/star level, or first to talent/star level, and only secondly to need?

I assume that you recruit to need, and pull offers once you are full at a position. However, you would make exceptions to make room for solid four star, or even five start recruits.

Michigan has good young depth on the O Line right now. Maybe one more in the 2010 class.

They need defensive help with the remaining spots.

brought in 8 scholarship and preferred walk-on Olinemen this year, in addition to the 4 scholarship redshirt freshmen, and we have one for 2010 (Pace), and probably will accept 3-4 more preferred walk-on OLinemen. I think the depth will be okay there.

If Clements or Clay switch (keep losing Oklahoma), they'll be accepted. But, I think the remaining scholarships have the names of Floyd, Christian, Furman, Olaniyan, Grimes, his teammate, maybe Swigert, maybe Flowers, and a couple others waiting to be signed on them.

so no Bryant at DE? You may be right re the OL, but their play vs MSU does not inspire confidence.

However, assuming Floyd, Christian, Grimes, Furman, Olaniyan, Swigert/Flowers, and one/two others, that still puts us over 25. Again, what happens then?

As you stated, the OL play doesn't not inspire confidence. The problem is the that 'their' play was mostly upperclassman, and does not include the 8-9 true/redshirt freshman that will form the team in the future. Taking one more OL would be sufficient in a year where we desperately need D recuits.

edit: by Floyd do you mean Shariff? not happening, though obviously he has a spot if he wants.

I listed played against MSU. All the guys I listed are either true freshmen or redshirts or high school seniors. That's a batch of about 15 kids, plus a few more, from those 3 classes, where I think the team will have a number develop into fine players.

Derrick Bryant committed to UCLA about 2 weeks ago.

Michigan can sign up to 28, I believe. Not all on our list will probably commit. Plus, some kids will leave the program. There will be room for all Michigan wants to take.

but don't want Swigert when Flowers, Sean Parker, and Dietrich Riley are still available. Anthony Barr still claims he will be making a visit and he may be a tough pull but, if he visits there is a chance. Like Grimes but not so much as a package deal with Murphy considering there's only six spots available. Would be happy to get Josh Shaw in place of the package deal especially since the staff is supposedly talking to a 5* DE who is committed to another school.

We need someone to replace BG and he may be on the roster or not. I would have to believe if the staff can somehow land S. Floyd (Stokes family will definitely try to sway him)that we may see a more traditional 4-3 next year. Even if they don't I don't think you will be able to keep both Big Will and Martin off the field unless you move one of them to DE.
I can see a front of Will and Martin in the middle with RVB and Roh at DE. Unless they decide to move RVB to rush end, slide Will into the middle and move Martin to RVB's current spot.

Depends on how many eligible for fifth years they bring back. My guess would be that Cone, Bryan Wright, Banks, and Patterson are unlikely. Schilling, Mouton, Ezeh, and Moundros for sure get fifth years. Question marks on Sheridan, Dorrestein, and Ferrera. That's a possiblity of seven scholarships right there. O'Neil, Clemons, Helmuth, and Wermers left and Feagin was exiled plus Witty didn't make it in.
Marvin Robinson got back his test score and is good to go. He will be the first early enrollee.

On the contrary, I think at least one of the Banks/Patterson combo is VERY likely. Banks is getting a fair amount of snaps, and the loss of either of those players would make our depth on the defensive line horribly thin.

Also, I think Dorrestein and Ferrara are pretty likely. We lose Ortmann next year, and Dorrestein is obviously the next best tackle (at least on the right side). We also lose Moosman, and Ferrara might be the next best guard.

We'll probably take a full class of 25, if not more, and sign some early enrollees back onto the 2009 class.

We don't need that many more offensive linemen. I'd say we take one more if we can convince Henderson to come or Torrian Wilson to decommit.

I've also maintained from the beginning that I don't think all five wide receivers will remain committed throughout the entire process.

I think we only need one true linebacker in this class, preferably a MIKE type. There are a bunch of young guys (Demens, Smith, Fitzgerald, Bell, Jones, Hawthorne) to fill the other spots.

I don't understand how LB's cannot be interested in playing right away. As much as I enjoy the staff stockpiling the defense with athletes, we need players that have set positions and can either play right away or at least compete.

We truly need some more defensive guys coming in. Looking at it we should land Cullen possibly his teamate Ifill who would be another saftey. Grimes the CB from florida has previously said that he would like to attend school with his current teammate. Now that we have offered his budddy, who is a DE, we could be in good shape for both. If just those fell in to place we would have the 2 CBs, 1 S, and 1 DE that you are hoping for. We don't need 2-3 linemen maybe just one more. Linebacker will be a little tough as we are running out of prospects, pray for Josh Furman. To me that would be a good end to a great class.

Does anybody know if he will stay at RB or move to Linebacker. He plays both well.

Aramide Olaniyan is being recruited as a SAM or a Quick, not an ILB. I think it depends on how big he gets.

We probably won't get Ifill, and we don't want him, anyway. He's not good enough to make a solid impact here. Of all the guys on our DB board, he's probably last or second-to-last, in my opinion.

No, it doesn't matter to Cullen. They've both said it would just be a plus if they ended up playing together, but they're not trying to.

I think there's a lot of people that are unsure about Olaniyan, with his size. He just turned 17 a couple weeks ago, so he's young for his grade.

He's visiting for the Ohio State game. We've been involved with him for awhile, he's just quiet about his recruitment. Illinois has come on strong with him lately, but he's very interested in Michigan.

I've said this before, but he's never been to Michigan's campus before, so he wants to wait to say anything about leaders until he visits. We're in pretty good shape for now, though.

Also, I know Rashad was coveting that Florida State offer, but with the turmoil surrounding the program at the moment, things aren't looking to good. A few of their top recruits have already bailed and others are talking of opening their commitments.

Plus, Illinois is putting on a major suck show this season, so that can't hurt our chances.

Nice to have one thread dedicated to the potential recruits. I hope we can really make a big push and get some very solid defensive prospects to committ before the class is complete. Offensively I think we are pretty stacked so the addition of some good looking defensive players would be a huge plus IME.

"I still have Oklahoma and Florida set and when I set Michigan, that will be four with one left to go. I work out with Tate (Forcier) in the summer and he's doing great at Michigan. I was excited by that offer and look forward to learning more about them.

We offered Kenny Stills awhile ago.

It might have something to do with the fact that we have 5 wide receivers in this class and the coaches were being careful with further offers. But maybe that's overthinking it.
