2010 Recruiting Class Average Ranking

Submitted by Ryan on
Forgive me if this has already been discussed; I searched and couldn't find it. Anyway, I was curious where our 2010 class ended up on the various recruiting websites. I've compiled an average score, base on the sum of the inverse ranking of each site (ie., 25 points for the 1st rank class.) The following table summarizes the results.

Results: Not so bad my friend. Coming off 3-9 and 5-7 seasons, Rich managed to pull together a class worthy of the #12 spot. If you compare us to the schools above us, I doubt you'll find a lot to argue about.

I welcome all criticism, as well as all corrections to mathematical errors.

I think it would be ranked even higher if fulfilling needs was taken into consideration. RR got his kind of players at positions of need. Five years from now, this may be one of the most revered UM classes of all time.

based on the filling of needs. We did land a nice crop of kids in the secondary which was obvioulsly a HUGE need, though we really really need true MIKE LBs for once Ezeh moves on (actually, could use true MIKE LBs even while Ezeh is here, but I digress). Furman and M-Rob look to be OLB/Stevie Brown type position, leaving only Jake Ryan as potential for MLB.

Well, and Antonio Kinnard. I think he'll play MIKE, if he qualifies. Also, I don't think the need at MIKE is that pressing. After Obi, we have JB Fitzgerald, and I think Ike Bell will play MIKE as well, and he could be solid with his bulk and ahtleticism. Throw in Jake Ryan (who will be a solid player) and possibly Kinnard after this class, and that position is looking as good as most for the future. As stated below, we have a few prospects in next year's class who are very good prospects. I'm not nearly as worried about MIKE as I was a year ago.

"I doubt you'll find a lot to argue about." I remember when there was the "Holy crap we're only signing quarks" bitching, and the "Did coach forget about defense" bitching... This class will be fine. And I can't wait for what the class of '11 will look like!

Given our struggles, I think Rich and staff did an excellent job of filling positions of need with very good atheletes. Look at our class in comparison to ND OSU and MSU. Sweet!

The rankings are influenced by quantity and OSU only took 18 kids. If you were to go by average star ranking, they'd be 7 on Scout and tied for 14 on Rivals. ESPN doesn't list average ratings but a quick calculation shows that OSU has the same average as Michigan. I am not making any inferences with this info other than these rankings can be deceiving. Another poster said it best. Michigan filled positions of need about as well as we could have hoped and that's what matters. On a side note, were there any kids, at any point who decommitted after giving their verbal? I know we kept them all on signing day but were there any early defects? I don't recall any. Will that get any press?

Definitely think the staff did a great job with this class and overall I'm happy with it. If I had one gripe, it would be that we didn't get a couple more O-Lineman in the class.

Our O-Line hasn't exactly been knocking them dead these last couple years, and as we saw in 2009, one big injury and it's PFFFFT! I'm also thinking that with the defensive haul, Lalota moves to the Offensive line, where his status as a 5* was primarily based. There are a lot of young guys wiating in the wings on O-line, though, and a ton of potential. Andd they have been able to redshirt every O-line recruit over the last two years. I'm guessing that the next class will be heavy on the trench recruiting. So yeah, I pretty much refuted my own thoughts. But I'd still like to have seen another OL or two this year.

remember what is on the board for 2011 namely Trey Depriest, Kris Frost, and Lawrence Thomas (highly unlikely given his HS). All are highly thought of and it doesn't bother me that they didn't take a lesser talent just to take one, but the staff really needs to land at least one of the three. Preferrably two to go along with at least 3 Olineman and a true NT. Given our current status of 14 openings and with two verbals you are looking at half the class without any further attrition.

Your key criteria for judging the worth class is now retrospective - both in terms of stars and in terms of the program: "Coming off 3-9 and 5-7 seasons, Rich managed to pull together a class worthy of the #12 spot." This tells us that RR is a good recruiter. But this tells us little about how the class will actually fare. I appreciate the comparison, and it says a lot about the potential of the class. But star rankings are now in the past. RR has proved he is a competent if not great recruiter. As for what he will do with these new wolverines, I'm waiting.....

Its funny how from 12th on down there is at least one service who absolutely hates each class. It does look like Rivals still does the best job of the 3 though =)
