2009 Redshirts

Submitted by varney_go_blue on
Does anyone know who got redshirted this season from our freshman class? I know we signed 21 with Adrian Witty being 22 if he had "qualified". There are only five true freshman that got significant p.t. last year and I know they won't get redshirts: ---- Tate Forcier ---- Denard Robinson ---- Vincent Smith ---- Will Campbell ---- Craig Roh I don't knwow what the NCAA's rule is regarding redshirts but is it possible that we will have 16... Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I think Lewan will battle for playing time at LT. People keep projecting Dorrestein at LT next year because he'll be a fifth year senior, but the coaches have kept Dorrestein away from LT so far. He's just not agile/quick enough. I think the LT job will be between Omameh and Lewan next year. Lewan's strength/size should be up to par by next August. He wasn't an early enrollee this year, which is why he was still so lean. Here's how I think the line will shake out: LT - Omameh LG - Schilling C - Molk RG - Barnum RT - Dorrestein

any chance that Lewan takes the "Jake Long route to success" and plays RT next year before moving to LT in 2011, given the struggles that Dorrestein and Huyge had in 2009? If so, the line would be: Omameh - Schilling - Molk - Barnum - Lewan

Magnus -- I'm curious why you think that Huyge will not be a starter next season. Given that Omameh won the RG spot at the end of the season and Huyge and Dorrestein were then battling for the RT spot, it does seem like the coaches were looking for something more from him, but it still surprised me a bit to see you elevate Barnum (who I don't think saw any first-string snaps last season) above him.

Lewan COULD play right tackle, but I just have a hard time believing that he'll beat out a fifth year senior (Dorrestein). If anything differs from my above projection (Omameh-Schilling-Molk-Barnum-Dorrestein), I would think it would be Omameh staying at RG and Lewan playing LT (Lewan-Schilling-Molk-Omameh-Dorrestein).

I like any scenario that gets Lewan on the field next year. He may be more raw initially, but I think will blossom with some playing time under his belt. I think keeping Omameh at guard is the better of the two scenarios, so that he could leverage his knowledge of the RG position in order to see some real improvement.

Magnus' list seems pretty good, but the rulings on redshirts for those who have seen the field can be mysterious. Certainly those who have little playing time in only the first four games seem to easily get theirs reinstated. This year it was the seventh game (DSU scrimmage) that was the freshmen's Waterloo with the talk being that all who played in that one would have the crimson jersey irrevocably incinerated. If this is true then I am bewildered as to why Stokes and Vlad were allowed to throw away a year of eligibility for no reason. That said, I saw little of them thereafter so maybe they can apply for a medical waver to get that year back (easier for Vlad with his knee history). On Lewan and the O-Line I again concur with Magnus, but perhaps Lewan can beat out Dorrestein and flip to LT with Omameh going to RT. We need a big shake-up in this group so don't discount the possibility of Schilling going back to RT with Q. Washington at LG......... or whatever.......just block someone!

Redshirts aren't guaranteed for anyone who plays a single down. If you play a single down of football in any college season, you're leaving your redshirt possibilities up to the NCAA. 0 downs = automatic redshirt 1 or more downs = a player/team must appeal for a medical redshirt and provide evidence of an injury So Emilien DID NOT redshirt. If he is granted a redshirt, it will be determined at a later time by the NCAA. As of now, he'll be a true sophomore in 2010.

I know that none of those guys were truly ready to play, but I think there are more than a few coaches who, finding themselves in the midst of a downward spiral, would have panicked and started throwing these kids out on the field in a desperate hope they would make a difference. I think you can make the case that RR has taken a long-term investment approach as opposed to trying to cash in right away; staring a pure frosh at QB was strictly a matter of literally no other options. I really hope he will be around long enough to reap the rewards of his approach. It would be more than a little ironic for him to leave after 3 or even four years and have some other coach to reap the benefits of the roster strengthening RR has been doing.

I think Mike Jones was initially credited with a tackle in the MSU game by mistake and everyone freaked out that it burned his eligibility. But they later went back and corrected it saying that he was not the player on the field for that play. I think he's got a redshirt. I think Vlad is medical or nothing. He played too much.

I have this strange feeling that Barnum is going to step it up this year. Huyge didn't play all that well last season, and even though Rodriguez said Huyge was battling for RT at the end, I think he was just covering for the kid. I think there's a bit of "You either have it or you don't" in my mindset, and once Huyge played his way off the first team, I think the coaches might have moved on. They took a tackle (Omameh) and played him over Huyge for the last couple games of the season. I think that says a lot. Huyge could reappear as a fifth year senior, but I don't think he'll be a starter in 2010. Just my thoughts.

Thanks, Magnus. I would love to see Barnum and the other young guys really push for playing time and give us more depth and competition at those spots. I'm hopeful that we will see significantly improved O-line play over the next year or two.
