2005 attrition = deep deep hole

Submitted by dieseljr32 on

As I was looking at our past recruiting classes I noticed just how bad the 2005 class turned out to be.  I am not usually a downer about the football program but one has to wonder (and I'm not sure if I'm beating a dead horse with this subject) if Lloyd Carr did not dig Michigan football in a deep deep hole.

Any opinions if you think the 2005 recruiting class which screams of attrition affected the lack of success in the first year under the Rich Rodriguez regime?

Only about 67 billion times. There are noteworthy diaries on the subject by Mispogon, and someone I'm sure will remind you of them.

But hey, thanks for playing.

Manningham left early, Antonio Bass messup his knee, and several other players from the '05 class were out of the program within a year or two for various non-football-related reasons.  I am not sure how much of this you can really blame Carr for.

Of course, it goes both ways.  I'm just saying that just like there are certain people who will blame Rod regardless of what he was/is working himself out of, some will attempt to blame Lloyd for everything as well.  I think it's possible to defend Rod without blaming Lloyd, and instead simply pointing out the attrition the team has gone through.

It wasn't anyone's fault. We just were unlucky with quite a few recruits that didn't pan out. It's not Lloyd's fault that he recruited several noteworthy kids who ended up leaving the team, or not performing, for one reason or another.

I don't know if anyone has come up with some sort of "luck" stat for recruiting (almost akin to BABIP in baseball). I feel as though Lloyd's last few years, his recruiting was fine (maybe save for a position or two) but we were simply unlucky as a whole.

That stretch (recruiting classes from 2005 to 2007) could very well prove to be the worst in the modern era for UM football.  Some of the numbers are in already ('09 and '10 drafts) and they're not pretty.  (You can't judge solely on the number of guys that made the NFL, but it's not a bad measure.)

I'm not inclined to blame Lloyd for that.  As someone recently put it here, $h1t happens.  Justin Schifano from '05 is a good example.  He was a 4-star O-line recruit that (IIRC) decided he just didn't want to play football anymore.  But, for @#$%'s sake, it is probably NOT RichRod's fault.  Aside: I don't believe that Mallet was "run out of town" or that Mr. Plow left for OSU solely because of a perceived lack of Family Values.

What I've just presented here is the elephant in the room that's invisible to the UM fans with poor attention to detail and a lack of critical-thinking skills.

on the ability of either one as coach.  The '05 class, for example, consisted of over 1/2 its total number of  4 and 5*(two) players. That's a good to great class by any measure and certainly measured up to past LC's classes.

What happened afterward, however, is not the fault of LC and its certainly not the fault of RR. The two prizes, Slocum and Grady, disappointed. It's as simple as that, with one contributing at the level of a lightly recruited 3* and the other not at all. But what was LC to do. He sure in the hell had to take a 4* DL and the greatest back possibly in Michigan h.s. history.

By this time we all are aware that Boren took an immediate liking to RR and was espousing his virtues until he found out nepotism and seniority were not criteria RR used for either his depth chart or how much a player had to exert himself in practice.

We know a qb who refuses to return the new head coach's phone calls was  certainly not "run out of town," Actually, based on his size alone, Mallett probably would have been more than adequate to lead this team for awhile, and by any measuire, using only his freshman year as a gauge, he certainly would have been a step-up from what we were left with.

But football, like life, is what it is. We were set back a few years in our transition to the new spread and our roster on opening day 2008 explains a whole lot. But still it's no one's fault. McKinney, Germany, Slocum, et. al.,. It doesn't matter. They and many others between '05 and '07 are no longer part of Michigan football, but we go forward with what we have. And suddenly that roster and above all, experience factor doesn't look nearly as bad as it did just a few short years ago.

Playing the blame game never has and never will do anyone any good. LC didn't use excuses. RR doesn't use them. They both coached with the talent available and both worked their asses off. That's why they're successful college coaches, one now retired.

This one will be too. The larger question, in  my  very humble opinion is whether or not Michigan fans are going to rebuild like they should. Too many have become too damn lax and looking for excuses instead of doing what they should be doing, and that's backing our players.

I think the one thing I've never really been clear about is how we got so thin on defense last year. I know about the attrition and all, it just seems crazy that it got as thin as it did.

You haven't been here nearly long enough to be telling people "thanks for playing," pal.

And from the look of things, you don't seem destined to be around much longer, either.

A coach should be given a chance to get his first recruiting class to be seniors. Then we can decide how successful the new coach will be.  In my humble opinion, RR should be given to the end of the the 2011 season before the AD will make a final decision on how successful of a coach he is . I just hope the AD will not pull the plug if he only wins 5 or 6 games this season.  Of course, I'm hoping for a much bigger upside in the wins this season and it will be possible since the team will be more mature and can overcome any minor mistake, unlike last year where the young team would often fold after a big mistake was made.  Lets just deal with rebuilding this team and stop the blame game.
