2000 Orange Bowl shirt

Submitted by UM Indy on

Just throwing this out there, while fully acknowledging that it's a little strange to be discussing a ten year old t-shirt:

Did anybody else get you the bright orange Orange Bowl t-shirt?  I got it and proudly wore it - once.  It's simply too orange to wear in public.  It's safely tucked away in my drawer though.

My sister made it for me.  It turned out to be a fantastic way to deal with the 8000 worn-out Michigan bowl/sports t-shirts I had accumulated, and a way of doing something with the equally out of control number of shirts I got through MMB activities without just throwing them out, which just felt wrong to begin with.

I think the one she made me fit something like 48 shirts?  Turned out being a little big for a twin bed, but probably just right for a full/queen.  The non-shirt side is this awesome flannel fabric.  It's pretty fantastic.

Not so much a quilting expert as someone who knows how to sew.

The toughest part is the tediousness of cutting the shirts into squares and putting the backing on them before you sew them all together into the quilt.  And, if I'm remembering this correctly, the Orange Bowl shirt in question was a bit too wide to fit the square, so it got cut off a touch.

I guess it's time to start an MGoQuiltingBee?

Just teasing.  For what its worth, I still have my basketball "1989 National Champions" t-shirt from when I was about 13 years old.  Is it strange that I kept it in case my kid would like to have/wear it?  Probably.

Actually, I purchased two.  The pre-game bowl shirt, and then the one following which reads "Champions."  They were both incredibly orange, yet somehow, the one from before the game looked a little classier.  Not that it was overtly "classy," just a little nicer with less screen printing.

The one with less screen printing got stolen from me while I was in grad school.  My roomy's cousin had done time in California for possession of automatic weapons with intent to distribute.  I was gone one weekend and found out that he had come over and spent the night in my room.  I noted a used prophylactic wrapper on my floor and the absence of some of my t-shirts.  I was unhappy, but chose not to make a big deal about it.  Although I miss that particular t-shirt, I think I probably made the right decision.

One has the faded worn look, which I normally don't care for, but looks oddly good in Orange. Then a blue sweatshirt too.

I like to put it or my Michigan Orange Bowl hat on just about every time my mother-in-law comes for a visit.  She's your typical over the top Bama fan who thinks the sun only shines in Alabama.  Hopefully I'll be able to update my wardrobe with something of a 2012 vintage.

She was representing the 2k turnover in Ireland.  She got a little nervous when she realized she would be choosing sides in the whole "Catholic/Protestant" thing they have over there.  Thankfully, no one took an issue with her.
