20 years ago this week

Somehow I missed this (we may have to remove the 'historian' from my name) but this past Wednesday was the 20 year anniversary of Dreisbach to Hayes against Virginia...

Yes, I'm sure you have the same reaction as me.  How the hell has it been 20 years?

This was my first game as a Michigan student, a culmination of a dream since the day I donned a Michigan t-shirt in my kindergarten school picture, teeth missing.

It was the Pigskin Classic so it was the only game I can remember where there was no formal student section. My tix were NE endzone, right where Hayes made that catch. It was hot as hell that day. What an amazing way to begin my Michigan student career.

I kept that ticket stub in my wallet for years after that game.

with the first being the Colorado game and the 3rd then being the Ohio State game later in the year.

After those first 3, I remember thinking that every game I would go to would be amazing.  That has certainly not been the case, but not a bad start seeing a two time-expiring touchdowns and a 300 yard performance in my first 3 tries.

I was at that game with a bunch of guys I played football with in High School. Not sure if high school coaches can still do this but back then they could arrange for tix for their players with M somehow so myself and a few teammates went to the game and sat in the seats usually given to recruits. I was the only die hard fan in the bunch and GOT DRAGGED OUT BEFORE THE END! Still pissed off.

I was 25 years old, four years removed from graduation.  Another alumnus and I drove up from DC to the game.  First time I sat on the east side of the field (section 2, 3?).  So I only saw a mass of humanity between me and the endzone where Hayes caught this pass.  Exciting nonetheless.

An amazing game to watch.  I was only 14, but I still remember being amazed how easy that looked, like UM was just fated to win.  And that Virginia team was good; had the Barber twins (Ronde and Tiki), and Ronde was one of the best corners in college that year.

I was working in Norman, OK and remember watching this game with some friends who were OU fans that were down in the dumps because their once great program was on the skids!

Great moment. I watched this game on a tiny tv in a laundromat while my mom and I washed every piece of cloth in my possession. A few days later I hopped a plane to DTW for my freshman year. It was the last "you'll be my child forever" moment I had with my mom. Good day all around.

Was only about a month before my wedding. Thanks for reminding me that I've got to get something special for my wife.

(Just kidding... This is one anniversary I've been planning for a while).

Still a no-no.  First of all, it's possible some of your guests were fans of a team not on a bye that week (which is an asshole move on your part) and your wedding anniversary weekend will always be during football season, and usually not on a bye week.

I know it's a little late for you, but just get married in the summer and not have to worry about it getting in the way of football at all.

You know that's different, right?  When there is one day that has a very predictible thing that lots of people like to do, especially my friends and family, I take that into account.  I don't have many die-hard baseball fan friends who feel the same way about one baseball game as many do about one college football game.

You're taking it to the extreme and missing my bigger point.  What are you going to do on every anniversary weekend where MIchigan plays?  That's an equally big issue here, I think.

We have to draw the line somewhere. I just accepted the fact that things were going to come up for invited guests. If they could make it, that would make us happy. If they couldn't, well, shit happens. I wasn't going to wail and gnash my teeth over it.

As for the years that followed - and by the way, it wasn't just the years but literally the following week because we were on our honeymoon - we have compromised. While M football is important to me, she is a vastly more important factor in my life. It's not even close. So, somehow, I have managed to survive.

This is the last comment from me on this topic.

You do understand, right, that September in Michigan is probably the best time to get married? Weather is nearly perfect. Giving my bride and me the best odds at a beautiful day for our wedding (and it was) ranked much higher on my list of priorities than whether I might one day have to decide between catching the U-M game and something my wife and/or our kids wanted to do.

You will find, too, should you have kids, that their schedules will also interfere with football. Regardless of what agreements you may currently have with your spouse, rest assured that putting those aside while you watch the game will not exactly win you a lot of points with her, her friends and family, or your children.

You're making a lot of assumptions about me.  I have two boys as well.  I understand conflicts happen.  I'm not suggesting you can avoid all conflicts.  But you can make decisions to minimize those.

Jeez and all this time I thought everone just got married in June... it wasn't even presented to me as if it was optional!

We were in Maui for the Pistons 1st title. They were showing them on delay at 6pm local time. I got a call from asshole (new) brother-in-law saying sorry your Pistons lost, but that sure was an exciting game. I say, the game hasn't even come on here yet asshole!

So... history will record that the Bad Boyz ran Showtime out of the gym that night, but I spend the whole game wondering "How do we lose this game?! We're killing em!" Til I finally realize (about when Magic went down with a hammy)  - that asshole was FUCKING WITH ME!

So, a couple days later as we return from some romantic couples whale watching/snorkling type event or other, I see a bar with satellite dishes on the roof and the parking lot is PACKED - at 3 in the afternoon. And the marquee reads "NBA Finals LIVE!!!"...

So I look at her, she rolls her eyes and sighs... In we go to a crowded ass divey place full of mostly Hawaiian Laker fans, but with a goodly sprinkling of other Honeymooning Detroit fans as well. We meet some other couples that we still keep in touch with to this day!

Funny old world!

I just got married August 21st. My wife agreed during football season was a terrible idea. We also took our entire list of guests (those who wanted to go) to the Tigers game on Aug 22nd. Now I'm writing this from Bora Bora as we are about to leave to make sure we are back and not jet lagged for M's first game against Utah. My wife totally gets it when it comes to sports, especially her Alma Mater, Michigan.

Look - I know we're all big MIchigan fans here, but don't we have friends who might be fans of other teams?  And forget MSU and ND, but what if your friend is a UVA fan or a Texas fan?  Do we not give a fuck about those people?

But the bigger point of my post was about future seasons - when your wife says "let's go to XYZ romantic place for our anniversary this weekend" then you're going to be fucked because romantic places won't have Michigan on TV and your wife won't be cool with you posting up watching MIchigan in your romantic anniversary weekend.

Well, he's still married after 20 years so I think he'll survive.

Relax, man. He simply said he doesn't care about the non-Michigan fan's football schedule. He's not saying he curses all humanity and kicks puppy dogs for sport.

A dear friend of mine is getting married in a few weeks, the same day as the BYU game. And if it's a 3:30 start, it will be torutre for me having to check the score on my phone but I'll deal with it. And I know she doesn't say f*ck me and my schedule because, you know, it's kind of her day.

I get that.  Some of your friends just aren't going to be football fans, and I'm not saying you shouldn't go to their wedding. But if you are a football fan, I don't see why you would schedule your wedding during football season. You starting this by saying having a wedding during a football season was a no-no, remember?

Wow. I was sitting in the front row of the student section for that game. Wasn't that the largest deficit (14) Michigan had ever overcome in the 4th quarter? What a great memory!

We had a huge family wedding that afternoon but tailgated and went to the game anyway for as long as we could. Had to leave after halftime to go home and get suited up. I got in the shower with Michigan down a couple scores, got out of the shower and it was close, and when my uncle, dad, and I were tying our ties in front of the TV, Hayes scored the winning TD. Of course, it was the endzone right in front of our seats.

One thing I really remember about that day was how absurdly hot it was. First August game, and we were all roasting.

Watching the game tape now, it's totally strange that the opposite endzone read VIRGINIA and not Michigan. Because it was on the opposite side of the stadium, I never noticed it then. I know it was the first Kickoff Classic not at a neutral site, but would that really have stipulated that Michigan put UVA's wordmark on the field?

I have a work acquaintance who's UVa, and he remembers being nearly dead from heat exhaustion more than losing that day. I guess he may have provided the essential research that you shouldn't try to use only beer to hydrate in extreme heat/humidity?

Of course if you win you don't look back on the heat as so debilitating I guess... I'm sure Dreisbach never has!
