#20 M Lax beats UMBC, now 8-1

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

#20 Michigan played their first-ever game as a ranked team today.

The opponent was UMBC (Maryland-Baltimore County) at The Big House in front of 582 fans.

Michigan led 6-4 at half in this one and held on for the 10-7 win. Ian King and Brent Noseworthy scored 6 of the 10 Wolverine goals as they both had their usual hat tricks.

With this win, Michigan is now 1-0 all-time as a ranked team. This will be the first winning season in the program's 6 year history.

Michigan is now 8-1 and will head into B1G play next weekend. Every team in the B1G is ranked.

The Wolverines will open the B1G season at #10 Maryland next Saturday at 2pm on ESPNU.

Yeah the Terps looked pretty good in the little bit of the game I saw.  They're always a tough out.

Big Ten looked strong as hell but took a step back today.  I actually think Michigan may be able to hang with Hopkins this year.  They beat UVA 18-17 in a wild-ass OT shootout today but they're pretty inconsistent and I think they might be one of the weaker B1G teams this season. Crazy to think that.  Rutgers and Ohio State came back to earth today with losses to Delaware and Notre Dame respectively. I thought that was bound to happen at some point.  Those games look a little more winnable now for Michigan.  I would be psyched if this team can steal a few Big Ten games this year. GO BLUE!!

Perhaps Rutgers is fair game. Ohio State would be a real surprise. While OSU did lose today they lost to Notre Dame which most people would agree is a top Five team. Ohio State schooled Denver. But we have both at home and perhap a few football fans will waltz in early to the spring game to take a look and give the Wolverines a boost. GO BLUE!! is right.

Little-known fact, the UMBC Retrievers are actually Chesapeake Bay Retrievers specifically. And just because you didn't know the UMBC Retrievers existed until today doesn't mean it's not a little-known fact.

It is a nice schedule. Maybe easy but designed to give the team confidence and then tests before the B1G season. Yes, some early easy wins but they won the ones they were supposed to and then won a game they weren't expected to win. Following that they proved it wasn't a fluke. So the schedule was a great design.

Unfortunately they could still be ranked in the top 20 teams and come in last in the B1G with the strength of the conference this year. Hopefully they can surprise someone. Delaware beat #1 ranked Rutgers today so perhaps.....

After the win at Furman JP told the team, "You won the ones you were supposed to win. Now let's win one we aren't expected to win." And that was Penn. And with no letdown against UMBC, this team has confidence and hopefully it's not finished getting better.

but can we call it "Lacrosse" instead of "Lax"? Though I knew the thread was about lacrosse, "Lax" seems lazy, trendy, or possibly a reference to either irregularity or Los Angeles International Airport.
